The ASUS TUF Gaming T500 can be a sensible compact gaming PC—but only if you verify the exact configuration and buy it at the right price. The T500 name covers multiple systems, including the 2025 Intel-based T500MV family and the newer 2026 AMD-based TM500 models. Their CPUs, graphics cards, power supplies, dimensions, ports, and upgrade options can differ substantially.
In general, the T500 suits first-time PC gamers, console players, students, and anyone who wants a ready-to-use desktop that fits in a relatively small space. Its discrete graphics card is more relevant to gaming than integrated graphics, but the compact chassis, mobile-style CPU in 2025 models, restricted cooling, limited rear I/O, and nonstandard platform make it less appealing than a conventional desktop for enthusiasts and long-term upgraders.

“Up to 64GB” means supported capacity, not the memory installed in every unit. Likewise, “two M.2 connectors” does not guarantee that a second SSD can be added without opening the system or that one connector is empty.
Gaming performance: choose by GPU, not by the T500 badge
The graphics card is the most important specification for gaming. A T500 with an RTX 5060 Ti is a meaningfully different purchase from one with an RTX 3050 or RTX 5050.
RTX 5060 Ti
This is the strongest documented 2025 configuration and is the version most likely to suit serious 1080p and sensible 1440p gaming. In its review of an RTX 5060 Ti-equipped T500, WIRED reported roughly 60–90 frames per second at 1080p in its tested games. It also recorded more than 60fps in Helldivers 2 and more than 90fps in Marvel Rivals at 1440p.
Those are results from one tested configuration, not a guarantee for every T500. They should not be applied to the RTX 5060, RTX 5050, RTX 3050, or Radeon models. The RTX 5060 Ti is best paired with a high-refresh 1080p display or a 1440p monitor, using upscaling and frame-generation features where appropriate in demanding games.
RTX 5060
An RTX 5060 model should be treated as a strong 1080p machine and a more entry-level 1440p system. It may require reduced settings or upscaling in demanding new releases. Do not pay an RTX 5060 Ti premium for an RTX 5060 system, and do not use RTX 5060 Ti review results to justify the purchase.
RTX 5050 and RTX 3050
These are lower-tier options. They can make sense for budget 1080p gaming, but the experience will be far removed from a Ti-equipped model in demanding games, ray tracing, and longevity. A cheap T500 is not automatically a good deal if the lower-end GPU is paired with a small SSD or only 8GB or 16GB of RAM.

Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB
The 2026 global specifications and an ASUS Japan listing document a TM500 configuration with a Radeon RX 9060 XT and 16GB of GDDR6 memory. That larger VRAM capacity may appeal to buyers focused on conventional rasterized gaming, but there is no basis here for promising performance against the GeForce versions without testing the exact system.
The CPU is the key 2025-model compromise
The 2025 T500’s Core i5-13420H and Core i7-13620H are laptop-oriented processors installed in a desktop chassis. This helps ASUS fit a relatively capable gaming system into a compact enclosure, but it does not make the machine equivalent to a desktop with a socketed Core i7 or Ryzen processor.
For GPU-limited 1080p or 1440p gaming, the CPU can be adequate. It is less attractive for CPU-heavy strategy and simulation games, very high-refresh competitive gaming, streaming, compiling, and sustained productivity. It also cannot be treated like a standard desktop CPU that can later be replaced with a newer chip.
Windows Central reported thermal-throttling concerns with its tested mobile-Core-i7 model and criticized its value. That finding should be attributed to the reviewed configuration rather than generalized to every T500. The 2026 AMD TM500 models use a different platform and should not automatically inherit the same performance or thermal verdict.
Compact, but not miniature
The 2025 model measures approximately 15.5 × 29.6 × 34.7cm and weighs about 6kg, according to ASUS. The 2026 global specification lists approximately 15.85 × 33.79 × 36.43cm and 5.9kg. WIRED described the 2025 machine as roughly six inches wide and twelve inches deep—compact beside a typical tower, but larger than two Xbox Series X consoles placed side by side.

The T500 is easier to move than a large tower, but it is not a portable computer: you still need a monitor or television, keyboard, mouse, and power cable.

Cooling and noise: acceptable acoustics do not mean low temperatures
Compact hardware has less room for airflow and larger coolers. WIRED found its 2025 test unit relatively quiet under load but warm, with a single 90mm rear fan doing much of the exhaust work. It warned that installing a higher-end graphics card could worsen thermal conditions. Windows Central had a more negative experience with sustained CPU behavior.
The practical distinction is important:
- Noise: a system can sound acceptable in a living room.
- Temperature: the same system can still run hot.
- Sustained performance: heat may reduce clocks during long sessions.
- Variation: GPU, firmware, fan arrangement, power supply, and room temperature can change the result.
Keep the T500 in an open position, clean its vents, and judge long-session performance rather than a short benchmark. There is not enough evidence to say that every T500 throttles.
What can you upgrade?
The T500 is more serviceable than a sealed gaming laptop, but it is not a normal DIY desktop.

- Storage: two M.2 connectors are listed on the 2026 model. The ASUS Japan configuration has a 512GB SSD and one free M.2 connector, but other versions may differ.
- Graphics card: replacement may be possible, but clearance, connector layout, firmware, cooling, and PSU capacity all matter. The system is not a blank canvas for a high-power GPU upgrade.
- CPU and motherboard: do not buy the T500 expecting straightforward processor, motherboard, cooler, or case upgrades.
The 2026 ASUS Japan listing identifies a PCIe x16-shaped slot operating electrically at PCIe 4.0 x8 and occupied by the supplied GPU. Even if a replacement card physically fits, the power supply and cooling system may rule it out. WIRED also raised concerns about moving the system into another case because of its custom layout and cooling design.
Ports and connectivity
Documented 2026 specifications include front USB-A and USB-C, rear USB-A, DisplayPort, HDMI, audio, Gigabit Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 6. Exact rear-port arrangements differ by generation and SKU. WIRED criticized the 2025 model for limited rear connectivity, including several rear USB-A ports operating at USB 2.0 speeds.
That is sufficient for a keyboard, mouse, headset, and ordinary controller, but users with a webcam, USB microphone, external SSD, headset receiver, racing wheel, flight controls, or VR equipment may need a hub. A powered USB hub can solve a port shortage; it cannot solve the T500’s CPU, cooling, or upgrade limitations.

When a discrete GPU is installed, connect the monitor to the graphics card’s DisplayPort or HDMI output rather than the motherboard output, where both sets of connectors are present. This ensures that games use the intended GPU. Confirm the exact port layout before planning multiple monitors or a VR setup.

The T500 ships with Windows 11, although the edition varies by region and model. On first boot, install current graphics drivers, run Windows Update, and review ASUS utilities before installing games. WIRED reported McAfee and other preinstalled software on its test unit; bundled software can vary with the regional Windows image, so remove unwanted applications rather than assuming every T500 includes the same package.
Some configurations include an RGB keyboard and mouse, while others may not. Check the box contents of the exact model before buying separate peripherals.
ASUS markets TUF products around rugged styling, and the 2026 Japanese listing cites MIL-STD 810H-related qualification. This is a manufacturer durability claim about testing requirements, not proof that an individual PC is drop-proof, abuse-proof, or immune to damage. Treat the computer like ordinary desktop electronics.

Review-period US prices illustrate the range but are not current price guidance. WIRED discussed a tested T500 at about $900 through ASUS, with other listings around $960 for an RTX 5060 model and $1,294 for another configuration. Windows Central reviewed a model listed at $1,299.99 and mentioned an RTX 5060 version listed at $959.99 and discounted to $899.99. These were prices observed during those reviews, not verified 2026 prices.
One current regional signal is the ASUS Japan store listing for a Ryzen 5 220, RX 9060 XT 16GB, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD TM500 configuration at ¥159,800, reduced from ¥199,800. That is Japan-specific and should not be converted into a US price or assumed to represent availability elsewhere.

Use this buying rule: compare the complete T500 against a conventional desktop with a socketed CPU, standard motherboard, adequate cooling, Windows, memory, storage, warranty, and assembly included. A substantial discount can compensate for the T500’s compromises. Near the price of a better-cooled standard desktop, the compact design becomes an expensive limitation.
T500 buying checklist
- Record the complete model code, not just “T500.”
- Confirm the exact CPU and graphics card.
- Check installed RAM and whether it uses one or two SO-DIMMs.
- Check SSD capacity and whether a second M.2 connector is free.
- Verify the power-supply wattage and efficiency rating.
- Measure desk or TV-stand depth, including cable clearance.
- Check the front and rear ports against your peripherals.
- Confirm Windows edition and whether a keyboard and mouse are included.
- Look for a model-specific warranty and regional support terms.
- Compare the final price with a standard prebuilt or custom desktop before paying a compactness premium.
Who should buy the ASUS TUF Gaming T500?
- First-time PC gamers who want a finished Windows system.
- Console players moving to PC gaming.
- Students and apartment dwellers with limited desk space.
- Living-room gamers who want a compact desktop rather than a laptop.
- Buyers who value brand support and minimal assembly.
- Anyone who finds the exact configuration at a strong discount and does not expect to replace the CPU or motherboard.
Who should skip it?
- DIY builders who want standard, socketed and replaceable components.
- Players of CPU-heavy simulation or strategy games at very high refresh rates.
- Streamers and creators who need sustained multi-core performance.
- Buyers who require extensive rear I/O, many expansion cards, or several storage bays.
- Anyone planning a high-end future GPU upgrade.
- People who need a computer they can carry around daily; a gaming laptop is better suited to that use.
- Buyers paying nearly the same amount as a larger, better-cooled conventional desktop.
Alternatives worth comparing
A custom micro-ATX or ATX desktop offers better upgradeability, standard parts, more cooling options, and easier repairs, at the cost of assembly and setup. A gaming laptop includes a screen, keyboard, webcam, battery, and portability, but its internal upgrades are usually more restricted. A larger prebuilt desktop can provide a stronger CPU, bigger graphics card, more storage, and better airflow, although it occupies more space.
If the 2025 T500’s mobile processor or cooling concerns are unacceptable, compare newer ASUS TUF desktop families as well. Availability and pricing vary by market.

Final verdict
The ASUS TUF Gaming T500 is best understood as a compact, configuration-dependent gaming desktop—not as one fixed product and not as a miniature enthusiast tower. An RTX 5060 Ti model can be a capable 1080p/1440p gaming machine, while RTX 5050 and RTX 3050 versions belong to a much lower performance class. The 2026 AMD TM500 refresh changes the platform enough that it deserves separate model-specific evaluation.
Buy the T500 when compact size, simple setup, discrete-GPU gaming, and support matter more than maximum CPU performance, quiet sustained thermals, extensive ports, and long-term upgradeability. Otherwise, a conventional desktop is usually the safer investment. In every case, verify the exact model number, GPU, CPU, RAM, SSD, PSU, operating system, and regional price before purchasing.
