ASUS announced the ROG Strix XG27UCG and ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG on May 20, 2024, but they are not direct substitutes. The XG27UCG is a 4K Fast IPS monitor that can switch between 4K at 160Hz and scaled 1080p at 320Hz. The XG27AQDMG is a glossy 1440p WOLED display running at 240Hz, with much stronger black levels and contrast but OLED-specific maintenance and burn-in considerations.
For versatility, high-resolution desktop use, bright rooms, and static productivity, the XG27UCG is the safer choice. For cinematic gaming, deep blacks, and 1440p high-refresh play in a controlled room, the XG27AQDMG is more compelling. Since ASUS now lists newer Gen 2 successors, buyers in 2026 should also compare current prices and specifications before choosing either original model.
What ASUS launched
ASUS introduced both monitors on May 20, 2024, as two different approaches to high-performance 27-inch gaming. The ROG Strix XG27UCG uses a Fast IPS LCD panel and prioritizes flexibility: it offers 3840×2160 resolution at up to 160Hz, or a 1920×1080 mode at up to 320Hz.

The same announcement also covered a firmware update for the older ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM. That update added OLED Anti-Flicker functionality; it was separate from the launch of these two new monitors.

ROG Strix XG27UCG: one monitor, two priorities
4K at 160Hz
In its normal mode, the XG27UCG is a sharp 4K gaming monitor. The 3840×2160 resolution is useful for single-player games, detailed graphics, video, photo work, and general desktop use. Text and fine interface elements also benefit from the higher pixel density compared with a 1440p 27-inch display.

Driving modern games at 4K and high frame rates requires a powerful GPU, and many games will need reduced settings, upscaling, or another performance compromise to approach 160 frames per second. The monitor’s 160Hz capability does not guarantee that a particular PC or game will reach that rate.

1080p at 320Hz
The alternate mode targets competitive shooters and esports games. At 1920×1080, the GPU has far fewer pixels to render, making very high frame rates more attainable. A compatible game that can produce hundreds of frames per second can make better use of the 320Hz mode than it could of 4K/160Hz.
However, this is still a physical 4K panel. The 1080p image is scaled to fit it, so it will not look as sharp as a native 1080p 320Hz esports monitor. “320Hz” also does not mean 4K at 320Hz, and dual mode does not create two physical displays. ASUS provides a monitor control or hotkey-based way to switch modes, subject to the relevant input and signal limits.
ASUS lists the applicable 4K/160Hz and FHD/320Hz ranges over DisplayPort, USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, and HDMI on its technical specification page. The correct cable, GPU output, input, and display setting still matter.
IPS advantages and connectivity
Because it is an LCD, the XG27UCG avoids OLED burn-in management. Its anti-glare coating is also more practical for bright offices or rooms with windows and lamps. ASUS lists 130% sRGB and 95% DCI-P3 coverage, a typical 1000:1 contrast ratio, DisplayHDR 400, DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1, and USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode with 15W power delivery.

The USB-C connection can be useful for a laptop, but 15W is basic power delivery rather than a replacement for a high-power USB-C dock. The monitor does not serve as a complete docking station with charging, Ethernet, and a large USB hub.
ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG: contrast first
The XG27AQDMG’s WOLED pixels are self-emissive, so each pixel can switch off independently. That allows OLED to produce genuinely dark blacks without the backlight glow and bleed associated with many LCDs. Dark games and films can therefore look more dramatic, particularly in a dim or controlled room.
The glossy surface is central to the experience. It can make the image appear more vivid and preserve a clean presentation, but it also reflects windows, lamps, and other bright objects more readily than the XG27UCG’s anti-glare finish. A bright room can undermine the OLED’s contrast advantage.

ASUS lists 99% DCI-P3 coverage and claims a 0.03ms GTG response time. That figure is a manufacturer specification, not a guarantee that every transition or complete display pipeline will measure identically in independent testing.

OLED Care is mitigation, not immunity
ASUS includes OLED Care functions, a custom heatsink, uniform-brightness features, and OLED Anti-Flicker controls. These are designed to manage OLED-specific concerns such as image retention, panel wear, and flicker during variable-refresh operation. ASUS also advertises third-generation WOLED technology and a Clear Pixel Edge Algorithm intended to improve text clarity.
None of these features makes burn-in impossible. The long-term result depends on usage patterns, brightness, static images, compensation cycles, ambient temperature, and individual panel behavior. Buyers who spend all day displaying a fixed taskbar, browser, spreadsheet, or application window should treat OLED maintenance as part of ownership.
The monitor’s brightness can also vary with content. A peak HDR figure or a manufacturer comparison should not be interpreted as sustained full-screen brightness in every game. ASUS’s “20% brighter” comparison was tied to a specific 100% white-window SDR test against the ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM, not a universal promise that every scene will be 20% brighter.
Which monitor should you buy?
Choose the XG27UCG if you:
- Want 4K sharpness for games, work, and general computing.
- Play both visually demanding single-player games and competitive titles.
- Prefer to avoid OLED burn-in precautions.
- Use a laptop and can benefit from USB-C video input and 15W power delivery.
- Work in a bright or mixed-lighting room.
- Want one display to cover several workloads.
- Have a powerful GPU, or are comfortable using upscaling and reduced settings at 4K.
Choose the XG27AQDMG if you:
- Prioritize black levels, contrast, and cinematic image quality.
- Mostly play at 1440p and want a straightforward 240Hz target.
- Value extremely fast pixel response for high-refresh gaming.
- Use controlled lighting where reflections are manageable.
- Prefer a glossy screen.
- Are willing to use OLED Care features and sensible static-content habits.
Consider neither if:
- You need high-power USB-C charging, Ethernet, or a full docking hub.
- You specifically need a 32-inch, ultrawide, or larger format.
- You primarily perform static office work and do not want OLED maintenance.
- You need the clarity of a native 1080p esports panel rather than scaled 1080p on a 4K display.
- Your setup depends on HDMI 2.1 console features that the exact monitor, console, game, and cable cannot all support.

What changed by 2026?
These monitors were launched in 2024, so current shoppers should not treat them as ASUS’s newest 27-inch designs. ASUS now lists newer products including the ROG Strix XG27UCG Gen 2/XG27UCGR and newer XG27AQDMG Gen 2 variants, along with other 27-inch OLED models.

The original XG27UCG was listed at $449 on ASUS’s US site on August 16, 2026. That is a dated US price observation, not a permanent price guarantee. The XG27AQDMG launched in the US at $699 MSRP with planned availability from May 30, 2024, but its current official price was not verified here. Retailer discounts, stock, regional SKUs, and color variants can change the value calculation.
Before buying an original model, compare it with the exact Gen 2 successor’s panel, refresh modes, connectivity, OLED Care features, warranty terms, and current price. ASUS lists a three-year warranty for the US XG27AQDMG page, but warranty and burn-in coverage should be confirmed for the buyer’s country and SKU.
Bottom line
The XG27UCG is the more versatile monitor: it offers 4K/160Hz for detail and desktop work, plus a scaled 1080p/320Hz mode for competitive play, without OLED burn-in concerns. The XG27AQDMG is the better specialist display for buyers who value OLED contrast, glossy presentation, and native 1440p/240Hz gaming more than 4K resolution or maintenance-free static use. Neither is universally better, and in 2026 both should be judged against ASUS’s newer Gen 2 alternatives and verified current prices.
