Asus’s “ROG Strix 2024” preorder was a China-market offer reported on January 3, 2024: ¥10,499 (about $1,478 at the time), with sales scheduled to begin January 9. The listed configuration paired a Core i9-13980HX with an RTX 4060 Laptop GPU and a 16-inch 2560×1600, 240Hz screen. The important caveat is that Asus identifies the matching G614 platform as the ROG Strix G16 (2023), so “2024” appears to describe its China release timing or refresh, not a wholly new hardware generation. This is historical pricing, not a verified offer today.
What the China preorder included
The January 3, 2024 report described a mainland China preorder at ¥10,499, with the planned official sale date set for January 9. Its dollar figure—about $1,478—was a currency conversion, not a confirmed US MSRP. The report’s configuration was:

Asus’s official China specifications for the ROG Strix G16 (2023) document the matching G614 family and component options. The launch report supplies the preorder date, price, and specific configuration claims. Neither source supports treating every regional G614 listing as identical.

Why the “2024” name needs context
The news report called the machine a 2024 ROG Strix, but Asus’s documentation calls the matching platform the ROG Strix G16 (2023), model family G614. The shared combination of i9-13980HX, RTX 4060, 16-inch 2560×1600 240Hz display, 16GB memory, and 1TB SSD points to that platform. The safest reading is that this was a China-market launch or refresh in 2024, not proof of a new CPU or GPU generation. The exact preorder model number is not established by the report, so buyers would need to confirm it on a listing or invoice.

What the specifications mean in use
The RTX 4060 Laptop GPU is the main gaming-performance component. A 140W configuration is a high-power laptop implementation, but it is not equivalent to a desktop RTX 4060: cooling, power limits, memory, and game settings all matter. Expect a machine aimed primarily at strong 1080p play and capable 1600p gaming, rather than a guarantee of maximum settings at the panel’s full 240Hz.
The 240Hz screen is most useful in competitive games, especially when settings are tuned for high frame rates. Demanding AAA games commonly will not reach 240 frames per second at native 2560×1600 with maximum settings. Lower settings and technologies such as DLSS or frame generation can help where supported, but do not turn the refresh-rate number into a performance promise. A contemporaneous Tom’s Hardware report on a US ROG Strix G16 promotion made the same practical point about the limits of expecting 240fps in many games.

The i9-13980HX is unusually powerful beside an RTX 4060. It can be useful for CPU-heavy work such as compiling, rendering, virtual machines, or streaming alongside gaming. If gaming is the priority, however, spending more on the processor may deliver less benefit than a stronger GPU configuration. Asus lists a 55W base processor rating; the laptop’s actual power varies by operating mode, workload, firmware, and cooling. The launch report’s 140W CPU figure should not be read as a guaranteed sustained draw.
Cooling, power, and battery trade-offs
The launch report described three anti-dust fans, seven heat pipes, 374 cooling fins, “Glacier Cooling Architecture 3.0,” second-generation liquid-metal thermal compound, and 195W total system power. Asus’s broader Strix documentation describes multi-fan cooling and liquid metal, but cooling details can differ by configuration; not every liquid-metal claim applies to every model. High power limits can support performance, but the likely costs are fan noise and heat under load. A large power budget also does not assure better gaming performance when the GPU is the limiting part.

The reported 90Wh battery and USB-C charging are useful for travel and lighter work. The stated 100W USB-C charging and 50%-in-30-minutes figure are launch specifications, not a guarantee under every condition. USB-C power is not a substitute for the full-power charger during demanding gaming. Battery runtime also depends on brightness, refresh rate, graphics mode, background apps, and battery condition; this is not the obvious choice for long unplugged gaming sessions.

As a historical comparison, Tom’s Hardware reported a US promotional listing at $1,549 on January 2, 2024 for a closely matching Strix G16 with an i9-13980HX, RTX 4060, 16GB DDR5, 1TB SSD, and high-refresh 16-inch display. That puts the Chinese preorder in a broadly competitive range on headline price, but it does not prove the two units were identical or make their prices directly interchangeable.

A fair comparison would check the exact model number, panel resolution and brightness, RAM layout, warranty coverage, keyboard, operating system, included charger and accessories, and return terms. For an overseas buyer, shipping, taxes, customs charges, payment fees, and marketplace markups can erase any apparent saving. ¥10,499 was the reported local China price; $1,478 was only an approximate conversion, not the price a US buyer could expect to pay.
Before considering a China-market unit
- Confirm the SKU: G614 configurations vary. Verify GPU, display, memory, and SSD details against the actual listing rather than relying on the family name.
- Check memory and storage expansion: Confirm the RAM maximum for that SKU, whether both modules are replaceable, how many M.2 slots are present, and whether a second slot is free. Regional Asus specifications do not give one universal memory ceiling.
- Verify support and returns: Ask whether warranty service is valid in your country and how repairs or returns work across borders.
- Inspect the regional setup: Check keyboard layout, Windows language and recovery options, charger plug and voltage compatibility, and included accessories.
- Calculate landed cost: Add shipping, customs, taxes, and marketplace or payment charges before comparing with a locally sold laptop.
Who this configuration suited
It made the most sense for a China-based buyer who could use local support, wanted a high-refresh 16-inch screen, and had CPU-heavy work in addition to gaming. Competitive players could make good use of 240Hz in appropriately tuned games. It was a weaker fit for buyers focused on long battery life, demanding games at native resolution and maximum settings, or an easy international warranty claim. Buyers shopping in 2026 should also compare newer hardware generations: Asus’s newer ROG Strix G16 lineup and 2026 ROG Zephyrus G16 specifications show later-generation options, but this article does not establish their current prices or value against a specific live offer.
