ASUS’s ROG Strix X870E-H Gaming WiFi7 is an official, purchasable ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM5 platform. Listed at $399.99 in the United States when checked on August 18, 2026, it combines the X870E chipset with Wi‑Fi 7, 5Gb Ethernet, USB4, PCIe 5.0 storage and four M.2 slots.
Its biggest limitation is also important: the second PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot shares lanes with the main graphics slot. Installing an SSD there changes the primary GPU slot from x16 to x8. The board is therefore best suited to high-end Ryzen builds whose owners will actually use its connectivity and expansion options—not ordinary gaming PCs that need only one graphics card and one or two PCIe 4.0 SSDs.
What ASUS has released
The standard black ROG Strix X870E-H Gaming WiFi7 is an ATX motherboard built around the AMD AM5 socket and X870E chipset. This article covers the standard model, not ASUS’s separately listed Hatsune Miku Edition.

Ryzen compatibility depends on the processor
The X870E-H supports Ryzen 9000, Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 7000 desktop CPUs, but those families do not expose identical PCIe and storage behavior. Check ASUS’s support page and CPU support list for the exact processor and BIOS requirements before buying.
With Ryzen 9000 and Ryzen 7000 processors, ASUS specifies PCIe 5.0 support for the main graphics slot and two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 positions. Ryzen 8000 processors can change the main graphics slot to PCIe 4.0 and may reduce its available lanes depending on the particular chip. The M.2_2 slot is disabled with Ryzen 8000 processors.
That makes the board a more natural match for a Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 build when the planned system includes multiple high-speed SSDs or demanding expansion hardware.

Four M.2 slots, with a significant GPU trade-off
The board has four heatsink-covered M.2 slots. Under the relevant Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 configuration, two support PCIe 5.0 x4 and two chipset-connected slots support PCIe 4.0 x4. It also provides four SATA 6Gb/s ports.
The critical detail is M.2_2. This second PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot shares bandwidth with the primary PCIe 5.0 graphics slot. When M.2_2 is occupied, ASUS says the graphics slot operates at x8 rather than x16. That is published lane sharing, not necessarily a fault, but it matters when planning a premium GPU and two PCIe 5.0 SSDs.
The second long expansion slot is also not a second full-bandwidth graphics slot. Although physically sized as x16, it is a chipset-connected PCIe 4.0 slot operating electrically at x4. Do not interpret the layout as a high-end dual-GPU platform. ASUS recommends checking its bifurcation and supported-device documentation for unusual expansion-card combinations.

DDR5-8000+ is not a guaranteed plug-and-play speed. Stability depends on the Ryzen memory controller, BIOS version, DIMM count, module capacity and the exact memory kit. Check ASUS’s memory QVL, particularly for high-capacity kits or speeds well above standard settings. If an EXPO profile fails memory training, update the BIOS if appropriate, then reduce the memory speed or use less aggressive timings.
Wi‑Fi 7 and 5Gb Ethernet
Wireless networking uses Realtek’s RTL8922AE 2×2 Wi‑Fi 7 hardware, with 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands and 160MHz channel support. Bluetooth 5.4 and Realtek 5Gb Ethernet are also listed.
Buying a Wi‑Fi 7 motherboard alone does not guarantee Wi‑Fi 7 speeds. You also need a compatible Wi‑Fi 7 router and client device, suitable drivers, a clean enough wireless environment and an internet connection or local network fast enough to benefit. The 6GHz band and permitted channel widths depend on local regulations.
ASUS says full Wi‑Fi 7 functionality on Windows 11 requires version 24H2 or later. Windows 11 versions 21H2, 22H2 and 23H2 support Wi‑Fi 6E rather than the board’s complete Wi‑Fi 7 feature set, while Windows 10 is limited to Wi‑Fi 6. A user report describing severe throughput drops and Bluetooth disconnections on an X870E-H system is anecdotal, not evidence of a product-wide defect, but it reinforces the need to install current chipset, wireless and Bluetooth drivers and troubleshoot the complete network environment.

USB4, 30W USB-C and rear connectivity
Rear I/O includes:
- Two USB4 Type-C ports rated up to 40Gbps.
- Four USB 10Gbps ports, including a Type-C port with up to 30W USB Power Delivery/PPS output.
- Six USB 5Gbps Type-A ports.
- Two USB 2.0 Type-A ports.
- HDMI, Wi‑Fi antenna connectors and 5Gb Ethernet.
- Optical S/PDIF and analog audio connections.
- BIOS FlashBack and Clear CMOS buttons.
The 30W Type-C output can be useful for charging compatible phones, portable devices and accessories, but it is not a universal high-power charging replacement. Actual charging depends on the device’s USB Power Delivery negotiation and requirements.
Internal headers add one front USB 20Gbps Type-C connection, one USB 5Gbps header for two ports and two USB 2.0 headers supporting four more ports.
Power delivery, cooling and ASUS software
ASUS lists a 16+2+1 power-stage design with 80A stages, dual ProCool II CPU power connectors, alloy chokes, durable capacitors and substantial VRM heatsinks. Four M.2 heatsinks, an AIO pump header and five 4-pin chassis-fan headers support high-end cooling setups.
These specifications indicate a board designed for powerful Ryzen processors and sustained workloads, but they do not prove a particular overclocking result, VRM temperature or performance advantage. CPU cooler choice, case airflow, ambient temperature and firmware settings still matter. The motherboard’s power-stage rating also does not determine the wattage of the system power supply; size the PSU for the processor, graphics card and other components.

ASUS also advertises AI Advisor, AI Cache Boost, AI Overclocking, AI Networking II, AI Cooling II, AEMP and Q-Dashboard. These are convenience and tuning features, not guarantees of higher frame rates or stable overclocks. AI Overclocking remains an automated tuning aid; AI Cooling II still depends on the case, cooler, sensors and noise target; and AI Networking II cannot replace a capable router or good wireless conditions. AI Cache Boost should be treated as a vendor feature until independent testing demonstrates a meaningful uplift.

The board includes M.2 Q-Release on all four M.2 slots, M.2 Q-Latch, PCIe Slot Q-Release, Q-Antenna, Q-Dashboard, Q-LED troubleshooting indicators, BIOS FlashBack, Clear CMOS and a pre-mounted I/O shield.
These features make storage and graphics-card installation less awkward, especially for builders who regularly change hardware. They do not remove the need to release the PCIe latch carefully or support the motherboard while removing a large graphics card.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should buy it?
- High-end Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 builders who want advanced platform connectivity.
- Users who need USB4 for fast external storage, docks or other high-bandwidth devices.
- Multi-NVMe users who understand the M.2_2/GPU lane-sharing trade-off.
- Network-heavy users with a Wi‑Fi 7 ecosystem or a 5GbE network.
- DIY builders who value diagnostic controls, release mechanisms and front-panel connectivity.
Who should skip it?
- Builders using one graphics card, one or two PCIe 4.0 SSDs and ordinary USB devices.
- Budget-conscious buyers who will not use USB4, 5GbE, Wi‑Fi 7 or PCIe 5.0 storage.
- Ryzen 8000 owners who need every M.2 position, because M.2_2 is disabled and other PCIe behavior can be more restrictive.
- Users with a Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 router who already have adequate wired or wireless performance.
- Anyone choosing DDR5-8000+ on the assumption that the advertised figure is guaranteed.
Compatibility checklist
- Confirm the exact Ryzen model and BIOS support in ASUS’s current CPU list.
- Choose DDR5 and check the memory QVL, especially for high-capacity or high-speed kits.
- Decide whether using M.2_2 and reducing the main GPU slot to x8 is acceptable.
- If using Ryzen 8000, account for the disabled M.2_2 slot and processor-specific PCIe limits.
- Use Windows 11 24H2 or later if full Wi‑Fi 7 functionality is required.
- Confirm that the router and client devices support Wi‑Fi 7 and that 6GHz operation is permitted in your country.
- Verify ATX case support, cooler clearance and room for the VRM and M.2 heatsinks.
- Choose a PSU based on the complete CPU and GPU system, not only the motherboard’s VRM design.
- Check that each selected SSD’s generation and heatsink fit the intended M.2 position.
Verdict
The ROG Strix X870E-H Gaming WiFi7 is a feature-rich X870E motherboard whose $399.99 US price is easiest to justify in a genuinely high-end AM5 build. Wi‑Fi 7, 5GbE, USB4, PCIe 5.0 storage and builder-focused controls give it a strong specification sheet.
Its value is not universal. The four M.2 slots do not provide four identical high-speed paths, M.2_2 can reduce the GPU slot to x8, Ryzen 8000 processors face additional restrictions, and Wi‑Fi 7 requires compatible hardware, software and regional support. Buyers who need those capabilities can make a strong case for the board; everyone else should compare less expensive AM5 options before paying for connectivity they will not use.
