NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has resolved an astrosphere—the bubble shaped by a star’s wind—around HD 61005, a young, Sun-like star about 117–120 light-years away. Announced on February 23, 2026, the finding is the first resolved astrosphere around a main-sequence G star. It is an X-ray detection, not a conventional visible-light photograph of a sharply outlined shell.

What Chandra detected

HD 61005 appeared slightly extended in Chandra’s X-ray observations rather than as a purely point-like source. Astronomers interpret the faint surrounding X-ray emission as coming from the interaction between the star’s wind and the cooler gas and dust around it. In other words, the data reveal the star’s wind-blown environment—not a solid bubble with a crisp edge.

The observations were made with Chandra’s ACIS instrument on February 23 and 25, 2021, for a combined exposure of about 18 hours and 42 minutes. The result was announced by NASA and the Chandra X-ray Center on February 23, 2026. The technical study is available as an accepted-for-publication research paper.

The widely shared, colorful view is a multiwavelength composite: purple and white show Chandra X-rays; blue and white show Hubble infrared observations of the dusty disk; and red, green, and blue represent optical observations from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Those colors help distinguish the data; they are not what the system would look like to human eyes. An artist’s concept sometimes shown alongside the data is an illustration, not another telescope image. See the Chandra image page for the image description and credits.

What an astrosphere is—and what it is not

A star continuously releases charged particles in a stellar wind. As that wind expands, it pushes into the surrounding interstellar medium: the gas, dust, and magnetic fields between stars. The large region shaped by the wind is an astrosphere. The Sun has one too; it is called the heliosphere.

At the outer boundary, the wind’s influence gives way to the interstellar environment. That transition is called an astropause; for the Sun, it is the heliopause. If a star moves through its surroundings fast enough, a shock can form ahead of the astrosphere, broadly comparable to a sonic boom. That feature is called a bow shock, though its detailed structure depends on the conditions around the star.

An astrosphere is sometimes described as a protective bubble because it can deflect some energetic particles. But “shield” is incomplete: a strong young-star wind can coexist with intense flares and particle activity that may stress a planet’s atmosphere. The bubble alone does not determine whether a planet is habitable.

Meet HD 61005, the “Moth”

HD 61005 is a young G-type main-sequence star in the constellation Puppis, roughly 117–120 light-years from Earth. NASA describes it as about 100 million years old—far younger than the Sun, which is about 5 billion years old. The research identifies it as a G8.5V star, so “Sun-like” means a broad comparison in stellar class and properties, not that it is a twin of today’s Sun.

The nickname “the Moth” comes from its dusty debris disk, whose swept-back, wing-like features give it a moth-like appearance. Those wings are not the astrosphere. The debris disk is dust left over from the system’s formation and shaped by its surroundings; the astrosphere is the much larger region associated with the stellar wind and detected through X-rays. The earlier Hubble study of the disk provides background on its distinctive shape.

Why this star’s bubble was visible

Astrospheres around Sun-like stars are difficult to image because their emission is faint and their apparent size is small at interstellar distances. HD 61005 presented an unusually favorable combination:

  • It is relatively nearby. At about 117–120 light-years, its surroundings can be studied with useful spatial detail.
  • It is young and active. NASA reports that its wind travels about three times faster and is roughly 25 times denser than the modern solar wind. Those figures describe this star’s wind in NASA’s announcement; they should not be assumed for every young Sun-like star.
  • Its local interstellar environment is dense. NASA and Chandra describe the surrounding material as about 1,000 times denser than the material around the Sun. A stronger interaction between wind and surrounding matter helps produce detectable X-rays.
  • Chandra can resolve X-ray structure. Its observations separated faint extended emission from the star’s central point-like source.

Together, these conditions made the wind–interstellar-medium interaction observable. They do not mean that comparable bubbles will be easy to image around ordinary nearby stars.

How large is it?

NASA and Chandra describe the astrosphere as about 200 times the Earth–Sun distance across—roughly 200 astronomical units (AU). The research paper gives an estimate of about 220 AU. “About 200–220 AU” is the sensible scale to quote rather than implying a more exact boundary than the observations establish.

For context, one AU is the average distance between Earth and the Sun. The Chandra image page also gives a display scale of about 30 arcseconds, corresponding to roughly 0.017 light-years or 160 billion kilometers across. That is the scale of the displayed field, not a separate precise measurement of the astrosphere’s diameter.

What this can tell us about the young Sun

Because young Sun-like stars tend to rotate faster and be more magnetically active, they can have stronger winds and more intense high-energy radiation than mature stars. HD 61005 offers astronomers a nearby example for testing ideas about how a young star’s outflow interacts with its galactic environment—and how that environment may have influenced the early heliosphere.

It is an analogue, not a time machine. HD 61005 has a different surrounding interstellar environment, and its wind, magnetic structure, and astrosphere need not match those of the young Sun. The image therefore does not establish the early heliosphere’s exact size or shape.

What the discovery means for planets and habitability

A stellar wind and its surrounding astrosphere can affect the radiation and particle environment around a star. That interaction may matter for whether planets retain or lose atmospheric material. But the effect on any particular planet depends on several factors: its distance from the star, atmospheric composition, magnetic field, the star’s flares and particle activity, and how long the planet is exposed.

A wind-shaped bubble is not automatically a benefit, and the discovery does not show that HD 61005 has habitable planets or life. It gives researchers a way to study one part of the star–environment system that planetary habitability models need to account for.

What “first image” means

  • First resolved astrosphere around a Sun-like, main-sequence G star: Yes, according to NASA and Chandra.
  • First astrosphere ever observed: No. The claim is specific to this type of star.
  • A visible-light photograph of a solid bubble: No. The key detection is faint, spatially extended X-ray emission; the popular composite combines X-ray, infrared, and optical data.
  • A direct photograph of the Sun’s heliosphere: No. The Sun’s heliosphere is studied from within, including through spacecraft measurements and remote observations of its boundary.
  • Proof of habitable planets or life around HD 61005: No.
