The leak was substantially right, but it is no longer the final word: ASRock officially announced on March 27, 2026, that its AM5 motherboard lineup supports AMD’s Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition through BIOS updates. The practical catch is that the minimum BIOS version depends on the exact board model, and firmware compatibility alone does not make every board an ideal match for a 200 W processor.
What ASRock confirmed—and what it did not
ASRock’s March 27, 2026 announcement says its AM5 motherboards “fully support” the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition. The company says owners can download and install the latest BIOS, using BIOS Flashback or Instant Flash where supported. Read ASRock’s announcement.
That official statement supersedes the earlier leak framing. It establishes broad support across ASRock’s AM5 family, not support for every AM5 board from every manufacturer. For an individual owner, the decisive check remains the board’s CPU Support List: it identifies the minimum BIOS version for that specific model. ASRock’s AM5 CPU Support List includes a “Support BIOS” field.

Which ASRock AM5 generations are included?
ASRock’s update listings include models across several chipset generations, rather than only new 800-series boards. Examples below show the breadth of the rollout; they are not an exhaustive compatibility list.

For each model, consult the ASRock BIOS update list and its CPU Support List rather than inferring compatibility or a required BIOS from a chipset name. A board made after the relevant firmware release may already have it installed; older retail stock may not.
How to check your board and update its BIOS
- Identify the exact model and revision. Read the name printed on the board or its box; similar model names can have different firmware.
- Open the model’s CPU Support List. Search for “Ryzen 9 9950X3D2” and note the listed Support BIOS version.
- Compare installed and required firmware. If the installed BIOS is older than the listed minimum, update before installing the processor when practical.
- Download BIOS only from that board’s support page. Read the release notes for CPU compatibility and AGESA changes. Do not use a file intended for a similar model or revision.
- Choose a supported update method. Use BIOS Flashback if the board supports it and the manual’s procedure applies. Otherwise, Instant Flash or another method listed for the model may require a working, supported CPU.
- Protect your settings and power. Record custom settings, follow the manual’s file and USB requirements, and do not interrupt power during flashing.
- After the update, boot at defaults first. If troubleshooting, load optimized defaults; test memory at default JEDEC settings before enabling EXPO, then restore fan curves and other tuning deliberately.
If the board cannot start with the new CPU and has no usable Flashback feature, the update may require a previously supported AM5 processor. A retailer or repair shop may be able to update it; otherwise, contact ASRock. Recovery steps, button sequences, and file naming are model-specific, so use the board manual rather than a generic procedure.

What the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 brings
AMD’s published product guide lists the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 as a 16-core, 32-thread Socket AM5 processor with a 4.3 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.6 GHz, a 200 W typical TDP, and 208 MB total L2 plus L3 cache. It supports PCIe 5.0, is unlocked for overclocking, includes integrated AMD Radeon graphics, and does not include a cooler. These are specifications, not evidence that it outperforms another processor in a particular workload. See the published Ryzen 9000 quick-reference guide.
“Dual Edition” is AMD’s product designation for this higher-cache Ryzen 9 model. The confirmed figure here is its 208 MB combined L2 and L3 cache; the label alone does not establish how much that cache benefits a given game or application.

BIOS support means the firmware can recognize and initialize the CPU. It does not equalize power delivery, cooling, connectivity, or expansion among motherboards. AMD’s AM5 chipset comparison shows meaningful feature differences: X870E and X870 provide PCIe 5.0 graphics connectivity, while B850 specifies PCIe 4.0 for the graphics slot and PCIe 5.0 for the primary M.2 connection; A620 is more limited and does not offer CPU overclocking.

For A620 owners
ASRock’s BIOS listings include several A620 models, so an entry-level chipset is not by itself proof that a particular board lacks firmware support. But do not read that as a guarantee that every A620 board—or every workload—is suitable for a 200 W CPU. Check the exact CPU Support List entry, board power limits, VRM design and heatsinking, BIOS maturity, and case airflow. A compact or lightly cooled board may be a poor choice for sustained rendering, compiling, or other all-core work even if it can boot the processor.

For owners of B650, X670E, or another existing board
If the exact board is listed and its power delivery and cooling fit your workload, a BIOS update may be all the motherboard change you need. An 800-series board does not automatically make the CPU faster; a replacement is more relevant when you need its particular USB, PCIe, storage, networking, or expansion features. Compare those needs with what your present board already provides using AMD’s chipset feature table.
Plan for cooling and firmware stability
Because the product guide lists a 200 W typical TDP and no bundled cooler, include a suitable cooler and case airflow in the system plan. Check socket compatibility, case clearance, and the cooler maker’s mounting guidance. After a firmware transition, if the system is unstable, start with default memory settings and check cooler mounting, pump or fan operation, CPU and VRM temperatures, and the power supply before changing several settings at once.
Should you replace the motherboard?
- Keep the current board if its exact CPU Support List entry is present, the required BIOS can be installed, and its power delivery, cooling, and features meet your needs.
- Plan the BIOS update path first if the board lacks Flashback and you do not have another supported AM5 CPU available.
- Consider a newer board if you need its additional connectivity or expansion, or if your current board is a poor match for sustained high-power work—not simply because a newer chipset exists.
- Check independent benchmarks before buying the CPU if your main use is gaming or another specific workload; the published specifications do not establish a performance advantage over other models.
If a listed CPU fails to boot or remains unstable, verify the exact BIOS file and board revision, return memory settings to defaults, and consult the release notes and manual. A BIOS update can change memory training behavior; test at default JEDEC settings before enabling EXPO. For a failed flash, use only the model-specific recovery directions or manufacturer support.
