NASA’s 212-foot Artemis II Space Launch System (SLS) core stage arrived at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on July 23, 2024, after traveling roughly 900 miles from the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans aboard the Pegasus barge. The stage was then moved to Kennedy’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) for processing and integration with the rest of the launch vehicle.

This was a major transition from factory production to launch-site preparation—but not the arrival of an unfinished stage. The core stage had already been assembled as a discrete rocket stage at Michoud. The remaining work at Kennedy was final processing, vertical handling, vehicle stacking, testing and integration with the boosters, upper-stage hardware, Orion and the mobile launcher.

What arrived at Kennedy

The hardware was the Artemis II SLS core stage, the largest major section of the rocket and its structural and propulsion backbone. NASA lists the stage at approximately 212 feet (64.6 meters) tall. It contains the engine section, liquid-hydrogen tank, intertank, liquid-oxygen tank, forward skirt and flight avionics, along with four RS-25 engines mounted at its base. NASA’s technical account of the stage describes how these systems support the vehicle during ascent.

The core stage’s tanks hold the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen consumed by the RS-25 engines. Structurally, it supports the stage adapter, interim cryogenic propulsion stage, Orion stage adapter and Orion spacecraft once the vehicle is stacked. The astronauts ride in Orion above those adapter and upper-stage elements; they are not carried inside the core stage.

How the stage reached Florida

Manufacturing and assembly took place at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. From there, NASA used its specialized Pegasus barge to move the very large stage by water to Florida, a journey of roughly 900 miles. NASA’s 2024 Marshall Star archive records the shipment and the July 23 arrival.

Pegasus is designed to transport large SLS hardware from Gulf Coast production sites. The barge carried the individual core stage—not a complete rocket. SLS and Orion elements are manufactured and delivered separately, then brought together at Kennedy.

Arrival at Kennedy versus arrival at the VAB

These are related but distinct events. The stage reached Kennedy Space Center on July 23 and was subsequently unloaded, moved across the spaceport and taken to the VAB. Saying it “arrived at the VAB” can obscure the separate transport and handling steps that followed its arrival at the center.

Why the July 23 milestone mattered

The delivery brought a principal SLS element from the factory into the facility where a complete Artemis launch vehicle is assembled. Kennedy teams could now inspect, process and position the core stage alongside the other flight hardware. The VAB is the only place in the campaign where the core stage can be joined to the solid rocket boosters, mobile launcher, upper stage, adapters and Orion for integrated testing and launch preparation.

Kennedy’s fiscal-year 2024 annual report characterized the arrival as a major milestone in the Artemis II campaign and a key step toward launch-site operations. Read the report from NASA.

“Final assembly” is not the same as core-stage assembly

The headline phrase “final assembly” is understandable for a general audience, but it needs a technical qualification:

  • Vehicle integration: connecting that completed stage to the boosters, mobile launcher, stage adapters, interim cryogenic propulsion stage and Orion at Kennedy.
  • Final processing: inspections, outfitting, access operations, functional checks, stacking and integrated tests before launch.

Thus, the July 2024 shipment did not mean the rocket was launch-ready. It meant the largest SLS element had entered the phase in which the complete flight vehicle would be built and tested.

What happened inside the Vehicle Assembly Building

The stage initially remained horizontal in the VAB transfer aisle. In December 2024, NASA and Boeing technicians lifted it into the newly outfitted High Bay 2 for vertical processing. NASA reported that move and the work it enabled.

Vertical positioning gave technicians 360-degree access around the stage and room to work on internal and external systems. It also cleared the transfer aisle while solid rocket booster stacking continued in High Bay 3. High Bay 2 had been used for Saturn V stacking during the Apollo era; its new tooling demonstrated a processing approach NASA intended to use for later SLS vehicles as well.

Artemis II’s place in the campaign

When the stage arrived in 2024, Artemis II was planned as the first crewed Artemis mission and the first crewed lunar-flyby mission in more than five decades. The core stage’s four RS-25 engines provided the main liquid-fueled propulsion during ascent, while the two solid rocket boosters supplied additional thrust. After ascent, the crew continued in Orion using the upper-stage systems above the core stage.

Today, the event is historical rather than a current arrival. NASA’s Artemis archive records Artemis II launching on April 1, 2026, conducting its crewed lunar test flight and splashing down on April 10, 2026. NASA’s Artemis updates provide the current mission record.

Key dates

Date Milestone
Before July 2024 Artemis II core-stage manufacturing and assembly took place at Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.
July 3, 2024 NASA documented the stage moving from final assembly toward shipment to Kennedy.
July 23, 2024 The completed core stage arrived at Kennedy after its Pegasus-barge voyage and was moved toward the VAB.
December 2024 Technicians lifted the stage vertically into VAB High Bay 2 for processing.
April 1–10, 2026 Artemis II launched, completed its crewed lunar test flight and returned to Earth.

How this differs from Artemis III

Artemis II and Artemis III hardware should not be conflated. NASA’s later Artemis III updates describe a separate core-stage arrival in April 2026 and a newer production and processing model. The July 23, 2024 event concerns Artemis II’s core stage and its move from Michoud to Kennedy; it is not a report about Artemis III hardware.

Why the logistics are significant

A 212-foot stage cannot be treated like ordinary cargo. Its tanks, engines, avionics and structural joints must be protected during transport, and its dimensions require specialized barge and ground-handling equipment. Shipping the stage as one assembled unit preserved the factory work completed at Michoud while allowing Kennedy to concentrate on the operations that only a launch site can perform: vertical processing, stacking, vehicle-wide testing and connection to launch infrastructure.

The July 23 arrival therefore marked more than a delivery. It was the point at which Artemis II’s largest rocket element left the manufacturing flow and entered the VAB integration flow that ultimately produced the flight vehicle used for the 2026 mission.
