On June 20, 2024, Ariane 6 flight model 1 completed a full, fuelled countdown at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Teams loaded approximately 180 tonnes of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen, operated the launch pad and mobile gantry, ran the flight software and countdown, and stopped a few seconds before planned ignition. The rocket was then drained. ESA announced the result on June 21 as the final major milestone before the inaugural flight, while stressing that the planned July 9 launch still depended on analysis of the rehearsal data.
What happened during the June 20 rehearsal?
The complete Ariane 6 flight vehicle stood on its launch pad while the roughly 90-metre-tall mobile gantry was rolled about 120 metres away. Ground teams then began the cryogenic loading sequence. Fuel loading took about 3.5 hours, starting with the gradual cooling of pipes, valves, tanks and engines.
- The gantry was moved away to expose the rocket.
- Approximately 180 tonnes of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen were loaded.
- Launch-control software, ground equipment, communications and countdown procedures were operated with the flight vehicle.
- The countdown was taken to within a few seconds of engine ignition and liftoff, then stopped as planned.
- The propellants were removed after the exercise.
ESA described the operation as smooth and ArianeGroup confirmed that the planned sequence was completed. It was a rehearsal of launch operations, not a launch and not an engine-firing test.
ESA’s account of the completed wet dress rehearsal and the ArianeGroup summary provide the official event details.

What “wet dress rehearsal” means
“Wet” refers to liquid propellant. A wet dress rehearsal is a full launch countdown carried out with the rocket loaded for flight, but deliberately halted before engine ignition and liftoff. It is therefore much more demanding than an unfuelled countdown: the vehicle, pad, software, people and procedures must operate together in the same configuration used on launch day.
The June 2024 test should not be confused with Ariane 6’s separate 2023 fuel-and-hot-fire exercise, during which a Vulcain 2.1 engine fired for four seconds while the vehicle remained on the ground. That earlier test involved engine ignition; the June 20 flight-model rehearsal did not. See ESA’s description of the 2023 hot-fire test.
Why cryogenic loading is difficult
Ariane 6’s core stage uses liquid oxygen at about −180°C and liquid hydrogen at about −230°C. The loading system must be chilled progressively so that thermal shock does not damage hardware or upset measurements. Nitrogen is used to purge lines: moisture or ordinary air could freeze at these temperatures and obstruct valves.

The propellants also boil off gradually, especially in French Guiana’s warm, humid environment. Teams consequently keep topping up the tanks during the countdown to maintain the required level. A fuelled rehearsal can expose leaks, abnormal pressure behaviour, sensor or valve faults, software problems, interface errors and boil-off issues that an empty-tank countdown cannot reveal. Official reports confirm completion of the sequence but do not publish a complete parameter-by-parameter engineering data set.
What the rehearsal actually validated
The achievement was integration. The test exercised the flight model, launch pad, cryogenic-loading equipment, electrical and fluid connections, mobile gantry, control software, payload and fairing configuration, communications, procedures and the teams responsible for operating them.
ESA is the Ariane 6 procuring entity and launch-system architect. CNES is the prime contractor for the launch base, ArianeGroup is the launcher-system prime contractor, and Arianespace is the launch-service provider. Their coordinated work is why a wet dress rehearsal is treated as a system-level milestone rather than simply a fuelling demonstration.

A successful rehearsal means the planned fuelling and countdown were completed without a problem serious enough to invalidate the test. It does not mean every launch parameter was perfect, that no follow-up work remained, or that the maiden flight was guaranteed.
What it did not prove
- Engine ignition and liftoff during the flight countdown
- Ascent and flight performance
- Booster separation
- Upper-stage operation in space
- Orbital insertion or payload deployment
- Post-launch mission success
Those events require an actual flight. The rehearsal reduced uncertainty around launch-day operations, but it could not validate in-flight environments or events that occur after release from the pad.
What happened to the July 9 launch plan?
On June 5, 2024, ESA announced July 9 as the target for Ariane 6’s inaugural launch from French Guiana. After the wet dress rehearsal, the Ariane 6 Task Force was to review the data and make a joint decision. “Targeted” or “planned” is the accurate wording: the date was not an unconditional guarantee.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Ariane 6 mattered strategically
Ariane 6 was designed to replace Ariane 5 and restore Europe’s ability to place institutional missions into orbit with a European launcher and launch infrastructure. In this context, “independent access to space” means European control of that launch capability; it does not mean that every supplier, component or partner is European.
The launcher is modular and scalable, and its upper stage is designed to reignite so one flight can deploy missions into different orbits. Those capabilities support both institutional programmes and commercial missions, but the wet dress rehearsal’s immediate purpose was narrower: proving that this particular flight vehicle and its ground system could execute the final countdown sequence together.

Bottom line for launch readiness
Ariane 6 cleared its final major pre-launch rehearsal by demonstrating a fuelled, integrated countdown with the actual flight hardware and software. That was a substantial reduction in ground-operation risk, not proof of flight success. The next gate was the authorities’ review of the data and confirmation that the targeted launch date could proceed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Ariane 6 fire its engines during the wet dress rehearsal?
No. The countdown stopped a few seconds before ignition and liftoff. The engine-firing event often associated with Ariane 6 was a separate 2023 hot-fire test.
How much propellant was loaded?
Approximately 180 tonnes of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen were loaded for the rehearsal, then drained afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
Was July 9, 2024 a confirmed launch date?
It was ESA’s target at the time. Final confirmation depended on the Ariane 6 Task Force’s review of wet-dress-rehearsal data.
