Some recruiters say they are seeing more applications and less useful information in them—but the available evidence does not show that recruiters everywhere are being flooded with bad AI-written CVs. The clearest issue is that AI makes it easier to produce and send applications, while generic wording, unsupported claims and poor fit still leave employers with more screening work.
What the evidence says—and what it does not
In an August 16, 2024 article, Futurism reported recruiters’ accounts of higher application volume and lower perceived quality. Khyati Sundaram of recruiting platform Applied described applications that appeared to paste AI-generated answers directly into forms. These are attributed observations, not a measurement of hiring across the industry.
The same coverage cited a Canva survey in which 45% of 5,000 respondents said they had used AI to build, update or improve their resumes. That describes those survey respondents; it does not mean 45% of all job seekers, or 45% of applications, were AI-generated. Futurism also attributed an estimate of roughly half of job seekers using AI for application materials to Financial Times reporting based on interviews and surveys. Without the underlying sample and methodology, that figure should be treated as an attributed estimate rather than a definitive rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFour questions are easy to conflate: how many applicants use AI, how much text they generate with it, how many submissions are poor, and whether AI use changes hiring outcomes. The figures above do not answer all four. They do support a more limited conclusion: AI-assisted application writing is reported by many applicants, and some recruiters say the resulting volume can be harder to assess.

Why more applications can mean less signal
AI can reduce the time and effort needed to draft a resume, cover letter or application response. That may let an applicant apply to more jobs. But additional submissions do not necessarily add qualified candidates. If each document is lightly tailored from the same template, recruiters may have to spend more time separating genuine fit from language that merely echoes a job posting.
This is a plausible explanation for the volume-versus-quality complaints, not proof that AI alone caused a change in application volume. Lengthy forms, keyword-focused screening and the pressure on job seekers to apply widely also shape the process. The result can be a cycle: employers request more tailored material, applicants use tools to produce it faster, and recruiters receive more text without necessarily receiving more evidence.
AI can help with very different parts of applying
“AI-generated CV” can describe anything from a spelling correction to a fabricated work history. Those uses carry different risks:

- Editing and access: correcting grammar, improving structure, translating or helping someone express genuine experience more clearly.
- Drafting and tailoring: proposing wording or reorganizing real experience for a particular role. The applicant still needs to check every claim.
- Automating applications: generating or submitting many applications with limited review. This can create volume while producing shallow or mismatched answers.
- Assessment assistance: using a tool to answer questions intended to show the applicant’s own judgment or ability. This raises a different authorship concern from editing a resume.
- Fabrication or impersonation: inventing credentials, results, employers or work samples, or having a tool stand in for the candidate in an assessment. This is deception, whether or not the prose sounds polished.
The useful distinction is not simply “AI” versus “no AI.” It is whether the application is accurate, relevant and grounded in experience the candidate can explain.
What makes an application weak is not proof AI wrote it
Recruiters may notice generic or clunky wording, but style is not a reliable authorship test. A human-written resume can be vague; a carefully edited AI-assisted resume can be clear. Instead of treating any feature as an AI fingerprint, look for problems that matter regardless of how the document was produced:
- Achievements are asserted without examples, scope or evidence.
- Responsibilities are dressed up as results, but no outcome or contribution is clear.
- Metrics, dates, titles or tools conflict within the document or with the candidate’s later account.
- Skills appear in a list because they match the posting but are not supported by the work history.
- The resume repeats phrases such as “results-driven,” “dynamic” or “strategic” without showing what the person did.
- A cover letter names an employer but says nothing specific about the role or organization.
- An application response repeats the question’s language without addressing its purpose.
- Several applications use nearly identical wording, while the details that should distinguish the candidate are absent.
These are signs of low information value or claims that need checking, not proof of AI use.

Why “it sounds human” is a poor hiring test
Advice to show personality or an individual story can help an applicant avoid interchangeable prose, but “authenticity” is subjective. Recruiters may mistake a familiar writing style for competence, or unfamiliar phrasing for artificiality. Applicants who use English as an additional language, need accessibility support or have received professional editing may be judged unfairly by an informal test of whether their writing “feels human.”

Can recruiters reliably detect AI-written CVs?
The available reporting does not establish that recruiters—or automated detectors—can reliably identify AI-generated text. Recognizing generic writing is a judgment about quality, not validated proof of who wrote it. A polished document does not prove the candidate’s claims, and awkward wording does not prove AI was involved.

Employers should use the resume to identify questions, then verify relevant claims through consistent follow-up questions, references, role-relevant work samples or other appropriate assessments. A mismatch is a reason to ask for clarification, not automatic proof of misconduct. An AI-detection score should not be treated as a sole basis for rejecting someone.
A practical screening approach for recruiters
- Define the evidence before reviewing applications. Set role-related criteria and a consistent scoring rubric, rather than using an impression of “human” writing.
- Ask about specific claims. Invite candidates to explain a result, their own contribution, the tools they used and the constraints involved.
- Use assessments sparingly and consistently. Choose work samples that reflect the job, give candidates clear instructions and apply the same standards to everyone.
- Verify material discrepancies. Treat conflicting dates, credentials or metrics as claims to resolve through the normal process, not as evidence of AI by themselves.
- Set expectations clearly. If a particular stage requires unaided work, tell candidates what assistance is and is not allowed before they begin.
More interviews are not automatically a fairer or more efficient answer to application volume. Interviews can reward confidence and conversational fluency, and they take time. Structured questions and relevant work samples can add evidence, but they also need a clear purpose and consistent evaluation.
How applicants can use AI without weakening an application
- Start from your own record. Gather accurate job titles, dates, responsibilities, tools and outcomes before asking a tool to help with wording.
- Use it as an editor or coach. Ask for clearer structure, missing context or alternative phrasing—not invented achievements.
- Check every detail. Confirm names, dates, numbers, qualifications and technical claims. Remove anything you cannot substantiate or explain.
- Tailor selectively. Emphasize experience that genuinely matches a role instead of copying its keywords into unsupported claims.
- Keep your own judgment in the process. Rewrite phrases that do not reflect your experience or that you would struggle to explain in an interview.
- Protect sensitive information. Before pasting personal data or confidential employer material into an AI service, check its data-handling terms and any relevant employer policy.
- Prepare to discuss the document. You should be able to explain every claim and example in your own words.
Applicants are not lazy or dishonest simply because they use a writing tool. Repetitive applications and uncertain screening systems can create real pressure to apply widely. But producing more applications is not necessarily the same as making a stronger case for fit.

The problem is the cost of producing text, not the presence of AI
AI can lower barriers to presenting experience, especially for people who need help with structure, language or formatting. It can also make it cheap to send generic or unreviewed material at scale. Recruiters then face a verification problem: the document may be polished without being informative, or rough without being artificial.
For both sides, the better standard is evidence. Candidates should use assistance without outsourcing the facts or judgment behind their applications. Employers should assess relevant work and verify claims rather than trying to guess authorship from tone.
