Japan is using wearable assist suits in caregiving, agriculture, logistics, manufacturing, construction, rehabilitation and health programs, including projects involving people in their 60s and 70s. But the evidence does not show that Japan is broadly equipping elderly workers with exoskeletons specifically to postpone retirement.

The more accurate conclusion is that these devices are workplace-assistance tools: they can reduce physical strain and may help some people remain in demanding jobs, alongside job redesign, continued-employment policies and better ergonomics.

The short answer: real technology, overstated retirement claim

Japan’s exoskeleton industry is real and unusually mature. Companies such as CYBERDYNE and INNOPHYS sell or operate wearable systems designed to assist lifting, bending, walking or rehabilitation.

Some older adults have taken part in demonstrations and health-promotion programs. Older workers may use assist suits in agriculture, care work and other physically demanding jobs. However, public evidence does not establish that exoskeleton users retire later than comparable non-users, that the devices raise Japan’s average retirement age, or that elderly people are routinely issued suits as a national retirement-delay program.

So the headline is best understood as shorthand for a narrower trend: Japan is testing whether assistive technology can make selected jobs less physically punishing as its workforce ages.

Why Japan is experimenting with assist suits

Japan’s aging workforce, labor shortages and physically demanding industries create a practical reason to reduce the physical cost of work. Care facilities, farms, warehouses, factories and construction sites may struggle to recruit and retain enough staff, while older workers often face greater risks from repetitive lifting and awkward postures.

Government policy provides the wider context. Under Japan’s older-worker employment framework, covered companies must secure employment opportunities through age 65, while providing opportunities through age 70 is an employer effort obligation rather than a universal requirement that people remain in the same job. In the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s 2025 survey of companies with 21 or more employees:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 99.9% had employment-security measures through age 65.
  • 34.8% had measures providing employment opportunities through age 70.
  • 34.9% had abolished mandatory retirement or set retirement at 65 or older.

These figures describe employment policy and company practices—not exoskeleton adoption. They show that later-life employment is already being addressed through reemployment, job redesign, reassignment and retirement-policy changes. Assist suits are one possible addition to that toolkit. What counts as an exoskeleton?

“Exoskeleton” covers several different technologies. A powered rehabilitation robot, a battery-powered industrial device and a lightweight pneumatic back-support suit should not be treated as interchangeable.

Powered systems: CYBERDYNE HAL

CYBERDYNE describes HAL as a wearable cyborg that detects bioelectric signals from the wearer’s body and assists movement in accordance with the wearer’s intention. That does not mean HAL reads thoughts or makes every movement safe.

In simplified terms, the system:

  1. Detects bioelectric or movement-related signals.
  2. Interprets the intended movement.
  3. Activates motors or other actuators.
  4. Provides assistance within the device’s programmed operating conditions.

Fitting, calibration, training, the task and the user’s balance all affect the result. CYBERDYNE began sales of its HAL lumbar work-support LB06 model on February 2, 2026, positioning it for emergency rescue, airports, factories, construction, logistics and agriculture. The company’s announcement is a sales and product claim, not evidence of a national deployment rate. (CYBERDYNE LB06 announcement)

Passive and pneumatic systems: INNOPHYS Muscle Suit

INNOPHYS’s Muscle Suit Every is a different kind of device. It uses pneumatic artificial muscles rather than electric motors, weighs 3.8 kilograms and does not require electricity during use. INNOPHYS lists maximum assistance of up to 25.5 kgf.

FinityPro Ergonomic Full Body Exoskeleton Suit – 22lbs Assist Force for Heavy Lifting – Back Support & Spine Protection – Lightweight Wearable Gear for Warehouse Construction Logistics
  • 【Boost Your Power with 22lbs Assistance】 Engineered with a high-tension elastic energy storage system, this passive exoskeleton provides up to 10kgf (22 lbf) of assistive force. It acts like an "external muscle," absorbing energy when you bend and releasing it when you lift, making 50-lb boxes feel significantly lighter.
  • 【Spine Protection & Fatigue Reduction】 Stop back pain before it starts. By promoting proper lifting posture and redistributing pressure from the lumbar spine to the thighs, this suit helps prevent Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) and reduces physical fatigue by over 30% during repetitive tasks.
  • 【Frameless, Lightweight & Breathable】 Unlike bulky robotic suits, our design is frameless and weighs less than a standard laptop. Made with aerospace-grade mesh and breathable fabrics, it offers unrestricted range of motion—perfect for walking, running, driving, or crouching in hot warehouse environments.
  • 【Universal Fit & Quick 30-Second Wear】The fully adjustable straps allow for a customized fit for men and women ranging from 5'1" to 6'1" (155-185cm) and 88 to 187 lbs (40-85kg). You can easily put it on or take it off in under 30 seconds, wearing it comfortably over daily work clothes.
  • 【Essential Gear for Labor-Intensive Jobs】 Ideal for logistics, construction, gardening, moving services, and automotive assembly. Whether you are lifting parcels, laying bricks, or doing yard work, this ergonomic support gear is the ultimate tool to boost productivity and protect your long-term health.

That figure is an assistive-force specification, not a promise that every object feels 25.5 kilograms lighter. The suit is intended mainly for lifting and repeated forward-bent work. It is not a general-purpose powered lower-body exoskeleton, and it will not actively stabilize a user during every walk, twist or climb. (Muscle Suit specifications)

INNOPHYS also sells Muscle Suit Soft-Power, a simpler back-support product marketed for care, agriculture, warehouse and manufacturing tasks. Its dated April 2025 price signal was ¥59,400 including tax, while the same announcement listed Muscle Suit Every at ¥149,600 including tax. Prices can change and may differ by distributor, tax treatment, rental terms and institutional contract. (INNOPHYS pricing announcement)

Who is actually using these devices?

Agricultural workers

CYBERDYNE reported a May 2026 onion-field demonstration in Hyogo involving six men and women in their 40s through 70s. Participants performed onion-pulling, harvesting and trimming while wearing the newer thin HAL lumbar work-support model. This is concrete evidence that people in their 70s have participated in an agricultural demonstration. It is not evidence of routine nationwide use or a measured extension of working life. Care workers

Caregiving involves transfers from bed to wheelchair, repositioning, diaper changes, bathing support and prolonged bent-over postures. These tasks can expose workers to back strain, whether they are young, middle-aged or older.

INNOPHYS reports use of Muscle Suit products in Japanese care facilities and cites reduced burden, fewer absences associated with back pain and less pressure on small night-shift teams. Those outcomes are manufacturer-reported case studies, not independent controlled evidence. A care worker using a back-assist suit is also not the same population as an older retired person using a rehabilitation robot. (INNOPHYS case studies)

Japan’s care-technology policy is also broader than exoskeletons. METI and MHLW revised priority fields for care technology in June 2024, with implementation beginning in April 2025 and including wearable transfer assistance. (METI and MHLW care-technology priorities)

Older adults in health and rehabilitation programs

In 2022, CYBERDYNE and Ina City launched a HAL program intended to improve physical function and quality of life among older residents. Ina City’s aging rate was reported as exceeding 30% at the time.

This matters as evidence of public-health experimentation, but it is not a retirement-delay trial. An older adult exercising with HAL in a community program should not automatically be counted as an older worker wearing an exoskeleton on the job. (CYBERDYNE and Ina City program)

Other physically demanding workers

Manufacturers market assist suits for logistics, manufacturing, construction, emergency work, warehousing and farming. HAL LB06 is positioned for heavy manual work, while Muscle Suit products focus more narrowly on repeated bending and lifting. Historically prominent Japanese developers have also included ATOUN, but products should be evaluated by current availability and task fit rather than by the visibility of a company’s earlier prototypes.

What an assist suit can and cannot do during a workday

Task Potential benefit Important limitation
Bending and lifting from low levels Back-support devices may reduce perceived or measured lumbar effort. Fit, technique, repetition and load still matter.
Care transfers May support a worker’s posture and effort. Does not replace a hoist, transfer board, second trained worker or safeguarding protocol.
Carrying while walking Some powered systems may support selected movement patterns. A lumbar suit may not address balance, distance, obstacles or load control.
Twisting and reaching Benefits depend heavily on the device and programmed movement. Many back-assist suits are poorly suited to frequent twisting or overhead work.
Outdoor agriculture Pneumatic systems can avoid battery use during operation. Mud, heat, rain, uneven ground and cleaning requirements must be assessed.
Fast warehouse or construction work May reduce strain in repetitive handling. Could interfere with PPE, harnesses, confined spaces, climbing or rapid changes of direction.

The useful question is not whether a device looks futuristic. It is whether a specific worker can perform a specific task more safely and sustainably with it than with a hoist, team lifting, task rotation, a height-adjustable workstation, shorter shifts or another ergonomic change.

Do exoskeletons really delay retirement?

Not as a proven national effect. The technology is intended to reduce physical burden, fatigue and discomfort during particular tasks. It may help an experienced worker remain capable of work that would otherwise become too strenuous, and it may reduce one reason for absence or job exit.

But the available evidence does not establish that:

  • Users retire later than comparable non-users.
  • Exoskeleton adoption increases Japan’s average retirement age.
  • Japan routinely issues suits to elderly people to postpone retirement.
  • A particular device extends a career by a specified number of years.
  • Assist suits eliminate the need for safer equipment, additional staffing or job redesign.

A short demonstration can show that a person can complete a task while wearing a device. It cannot establish lower injury rates, better retention over several years, a return on investment or a delayed-retirement effect. Most detailed customer-outcome evidence in the supplied sources comes from manufacturers’ own case studies.

Powered versus passive: which approach makes sense?

Powered systems

Powered systems are worth considering where assistance must respond to more complex or dynamic movement and where an organization can provide fitting, charging, maintenance and training. Their trade-offs include greater complexity, battery management, servicing and more elaborate safety procedures. CYBERDYNE’s HAL programs may also be institutional or program-based rather than ordinary consumer purchases.

Passive or pneumatic systems

Passive and pneumatic suits are more attractive when the central problem is repetitive bending or lifting, especially where low weight and operation without electricity matter. Their assistance is narrower, can depend on fit and adjustment, and does not replace a lifting machine or actively stabilize the whole body.

What employers should check before buying

  1. Map the movement. Record whether the job involves floor-level lifting, prolonged bending, walking, twisting, overhead work, kneeling, climbing or sudden changes of direction.
  2. Test the actual workflow. Arrange a demonstration or paid rental rather than relying on a brief product video. INNOPHYS lists demonstrations and paid rentals through its purchase and inquiry page.
  3. Check fit and PPE. Height, waist, body shape, clothing, harnesses, gloves, footwear and uniforms all matter. INNOPHYS lists specific height ranges for Muscle Suit Every sizes; “for older users” does not mean one size fits everyone.
  4. Train and inspect. Include fitting, donning and doffing, task-specific practice, cleaning, maintenance, malfunction reporting and clear limits on loads and movements.
  5. Compare alternatives. Price the suit against a hoist, adjustable workstation, team lifting, task rotation, more frequent breaks, shorter shifts, reassignment or added staffing.
  6. Evaluate after several shifts. Measure discomfort, task time, errors, worker acceptance, pressure points, near misses and whether the device introduces new problems.

The total cost includes training, demonstrations, replacement parts, cleaning, repairs, batteries where applicable, storage, fitting time and compatibility checks—not just the purchase price. CYBERDYNE’s LB06 announcement did not identify a public price, so institutional buyers must use the vendor contact route rather than assume a retail figure.

Safety and ethical limits

An exoskeleton can reduce strain without reducing injury risk to zero. Slips, trips, excessive loads, poor lifting technique, twisting while loaded, repetitive exposure and device misfit remain hazards. Reduced fatigue can also create overconfidence or tempt an employer to increase quotas and shift length.

Assistance may redistribute effort to the hips, knees, shoulders, arms, feet or cardiovascular system. Any claim that a device “reduces the load” should specify which body region, which task and what test conditions were used.

Care facilities must consider the care recipient’s weight, mobility, fall risk and sudden movements. A suit does not make a transfer safe by itself. Users with balance disorders, severe osteoporosis, cardiovascular limitations, joint problems, neurological conditions, skin sensitivity, recent surgery or cognitive or sensory impairments may require professional assessment. Medical, rehabilitation and exercise use should be supervised by qualified professionals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Worker choice is equally important. A device that is hot, restrictive, stigmatizing, hard to put on or perceived as surveillance may be rejected even if laboratory measurements look favorable. Employers should ask whether the technology gives older workers more options—or pressures them to work longer, masks understaffing or shifts the burden to another part of the body.

The more accurate conclusion

Japan’s wearable assist suits are not a demonstrated replacement for retirement. They are one experiment in making selected jobs safer and more sustainable for an aging workforce.

Some people in their 60s and 70s have used or demonstrated these systems, and Japanese companies report workplace deployments in care, farming and other industries. Yet the strongest evidence supports reduced physical burden and possible job retention—not a quantified increase in retirement age.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The future of later-life employment will depend on the whole job: staffing, hours, pay, equipment, training, autonomy and task design. An exoskeleton may help with one part of that equation, but it cannot solve an unsafe workplace or prove that everyone should work longer.
