Yes—CurseForge is generally safe to use in 2026, but it is not risk-free. The major Minecraft malware incident in June 2023 was addressed, and CurseForge says files downloaded directly through its website or official app are scanned for malware and malicious code. However, mods are still third-party executable software, and ZIP files imported from Discord, friends, or other websites may not be scanned or verified by CurseForge.
The practical answer is simple: download from the official project page or app, inspect unfamiliar files and modpacks, and do not treat a platform check, creator badge, download count, or launcher as a permanent safety guarantee.
What happened to CurseForge in 2023?
On June 7, 2023, a malicious actor targeted the modded Minecraft ecosystem by creating accounts and uploading infected Minecraft JAR files. CurseForge reported approximately 6,500 downloads during the incident, using a non-unique download count in its public reporting.
The malware was designed to target Minecraft mod files and initially evaded ordinary commercial antivirus detection. This was not evidence that every CurseForge project was infected or that the entire website had become malicious. The documented problem involved malicious uploads and compromised or malicious accounts.

CurseForge reported that it removed identified infected files, banned the relevant accounts, addressed the abuse route, and added additional scanning and moderation procedures. Is the 2023 malware still active?
The public information supports saying that the known incident was remediated—not that future malware is impossible. CurseForge says identified infected files were removed and relevant accounts were banned. Users who did not download the listed projects during the affected period should be safe from that specific incident, according to CurseForge’s guidance.
That is a narrower claim than “every CurseForge file is guaranteed safe.” A future attacker could use a different account, a compromised creator account, a newly altered file, an undiscovered vulnerability, or social engineering. CurseForge’s safety statements are first-party assurances, not independent proof of perfect detection.

CurseForge describes a layered moderation process involving:
- automated processing and security checks;
- manual review of new and updated projects; and
- community reports followed by moderation action.
Its current safety guidance says files downloaded directly through the CurseForge website or app are scanned for malware and malicious code. It also says the ZIP-profile import process can highlight potentially suspicious override files. The relevant details are in CurseForge’s current safety guidance and moderation policies.

These are useful safeguards, but a scan is not the same as a source-code audit or behavioral guarantee. A mod is commonly distributed as a JAR file and may legitimately interact with game files, local data, or network services. Security tools can also produce false positives. CurseForge does not publish a guarantee that every malicious modification will be detected before download or execution.
The biggest catch: imported modpacks are different
Importing a modpack into the CurseForge app does not automatically make it trusted.

CurseForge distinguishes between files downloaded directly from its website or app and ZIP files supplied by someone else and imported through the app. According to its current guidance, it cannot scan or verify externally supplied ZIP files in the same way. An imported profile may also contain override files unrelated to ordinary mod downloads.
A ZIP from an established project’s official page is materially different from a ZIP sent by an unknown Discord account. Be especially cautious if an archive contains unrelated JARs, EXE or BAT files, scripts, launchers, “verification” tools, or instructions to disable antivirus protection.
Do not assume that a warning-free import is a full security audit. Inspect the archive’s source and contents before launching the instance.

How to download CurseForge mods safely
- Use the official source. Go directly to curseforge.com or open the official CurseForge app. Avoid anonymous mirrors and download links from social media or private messages.
- Check the project details. Confirm that the project is for Minecraft: Java Edition and that the file supports your exact Minecraft version and loader—Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or another listed requirement.
- Compare the release information. The author, file name, version, changelog, dependencies, and documentation should make sense together. Be cautious about a sudden, unusual update from a normally established project.
- Prefer a credible project history. Age, documentation, active maintenance, issue discussion, and community exposure are useful signals. They reduce uncertainty but do not prove that the newest file is safe.
- Install through the official app when practical. It can match versions, install dependencies, manage updates, and provide a controlled download path.
- Reject unrelated installers. A normal mod should not require a separate “FPS booster,” password-verification page, launcher, voice-chat installer, or executable downloaded from Discord.
- Keep the computer protected. Update Windows, macOS, or Linux; Java; the Minecraft launcher; and reputable antivirus or antimalware software.
- Back up important worlds. Make backups before installing a large or unfamiliar modpack. A backup protects your data, although it cannot undo credential theft or operating-system compromise.
Is the official CurseForge app safe?
The official app is generally the safer way to manage CurseForge content because it provides platform-controlled downloads, version matching, installation, updates, and dependency handling. CurseForge currently offers standalone and Overwolf versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux through its official app page.

But the app and its contents are separate security questions. The app is not a sandbox. If you launch a malicious mod, the Java process may have access to the permissions available to Minecraft and your operating system. Installing the app does not independently audit every imported archive or protect your files from code that you choose to execute.
CurseForge Premium may remove ads, provide themes, and support authors, but paying for it does not make mods safer. It should not be treated as a security product.
What should you do if you downloaded a suspicious mod?
If you suspect that you used one of the 2023 affected files—or launched a suspicious JAR—take the concern seriously.
- Stop launching the affected Minecraft instance.
- Use CurseForge’s detection tool against your Minecraft mod directories.
- Run a reputable, independently maintained antivirus or antimalware scan.
- If infection is detected, disconnect the computer from the internet while investigating.
- From a known-clean device, change important passwords, especially for email, Microsoft, Discord, financial services, and your password manager.
- Revoke active sessions, refresh tokens, or sign out other devices wherever the service provides that option.
- Remove infected files and follow the security tool’s cleanup instructions.
- If persistence or credential theft is suspected, seek professional incident-response help or consider a clean operating-system reinstall.
- Restore worlds and other files only from backups created before the suspected infection.
Do not rely on deleting only the visible mod file. A clean scan today is helpful, but it does not prove that a previously executed JAR never accessed credentials or left persistence behind. Also avoid uploading private files to public malware-scanning services without considering the privacy consequences.

Can ordinary antivirus detect dangerous Minecraft mods?
Antivirus remains important, but it should not be your only defense. CurseForge reported that the 2023 malware initially evaded commercial antivirus products and scans. A new, modified, or obfuscated file may not yet have a signature or reputation record.
Detection can improve later through updated signatures, cloud reputation, and behavioral analysis. The most reliable approach is layered: use reputable security software, download from a known source, examine the project and archive, keep the operating system updated, and avoid executing unrelated files.
If antivirus flags a mod, do not dismiss it automatically as a false positive. Java archives can trigger false positives, but the exact file, download source, project history, and results from reputable security tools should be checked before running it.

Switching to Modrinth does not eliminate the risk. Modrinth is a credible Minecraft-focused alternative with an open-source desktop app, a public security-reporting process, and support for mod and modpack management. It also hosts third-party code, so it cannot make every uploaded file risk-free.

Choose based on the specific project, loader, Minecraft version, update handling, launcher design, privacy preferences, and project maintenance. What about Prism Launcher and the official Minecraft Launcher?
Prism Launcher is a third-party instance manager, not a separate safety guarantee. It can simplify multiple Minecraft installations and access content from supported platforms, but a malicious mod remains malicious regardless of which launcher installs it.
CurseForge announced that API-key authentication would become required for applications making direct CDN requests without a valid key on July 16, 2026. Ordinary CurseForge website and app users were not required to do anything. Prism Launcher 11.0.3, released July 11, 2026, reported fixes for CurseForge support after that deadline. This was primarily a download authentication and distribution change—not evidence that CurseForge had suddenly become safer or less safe. Check that any third-party launcher is current.
The official Minecraft Launcher remains the appropriate baseline for obtaining and authenticating Minecraft itself. It does not replace a mod repository or independently vet third-party mods.

- A modpack arrives as an unsolicited Discord attachment or private-message link.
- The creator uses urgency tactics or insists that you update immediately.
- The archive contains unrelated executables, scripts, or unfamiliar JAR files.
- The package requires a separate installer or asks you to disable antivirus.
- The project is brand-new, has little documentation, or has an unusual file for its stated purpose.
- A popular project suddenly publishes an unexplained or inconsistent release.
- A “Minecraft verification” page asks for your Microsoft, Discord, or other credentials.
- A server package is intended to run with elevated permissions but comes from an unverified source.
Bottom line
CurseForge is a reasonable and generally safe source for Minecraft: Java Edition mods in 2026. The June 2023 incident was addressed, and the platform describes stronger scanning and moderation controls. Downloading directly from an official CurseForge project page or the official app is safer than accepting an external archive.
Still, “safe” is not a guarantee. Treat every mod as third-party executable code, inspect unfamiliar modpacks, keep security software updated, and use the detection and recovery guidance if you may have run an affected file.
