What Apple has officially confirmed
At WWDC on June 8, 2026, Apple previewed Siri AI as a more capable assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. On September 14, Apple said Siri AI and its next-generation Apple Intelligence capabilities were available with its 2027 software releases.
Apple’s current description is specific: its next-generation foundation models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models. That establishes a collaboration in model development. It does not establish that Siri sends every request to Google, that users can select Gemini inside Siri, or that Apple has created a general-purpose provider marketplace.
Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi described the launch this way: “We’re delivering the next generation of Apple Intelligence across our platforms; introducing Siri AI, a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable Siri; expanding child safety features with intuitive new tools for families; and making our software platforms faster, more reliable, and more delightful than ever before.” This is Apple’s characterization of the product, not an independently measured performance result.

The timeline: report first, announcement later

The March report and September announcement should not be merged into one claim. A plan to expose Siri to rival assistants is different from Apple’s later confirmation that Google collaborated on Apple’s foundation models.
Can Siri use Gemini?
There are two different meanings behind that question:

Gemini models helped build Apple’s models
This is the part Apple has confirmed. Apple says its next-generation Apple Foundation Models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.
Users can choose Gemini as Siri’s provider
The reviewed Apple announcements do not confirm an unrestricted setting that lets users swap Siri’s underlying model for Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT or another assistant. Bloomberg reported that Apple planned rival-assistant access, but that report describes an intended feature, not sufficient evidence that a provider picker shipped.

How third-party apps fit into Siri
Apple’s developer frameworks provide a separate route for outside software. Apple says apps can connect to Apple Intelligence and features such as Siri AI through frameworks including App Intents. An app can expose actions that Siri invokes—for example, creating a task, searching content or controlling a supported function.
That integration layer should not be confused with replacing Siri’s foundation model. App Intents let an application make capabilities available to the system; they do not, by themselves, give the user a choice of which large language model runs Siri.

When is Siri AI available?
Apple said Siri AI was available starting September 14, 2026, with its 2027 software releases. The announced platforms are iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27 and tvOS 27.
“Available” does not mean every feature is enabled for every person. Apple’s release material does not provide a complete compatibility matrix in the information available here, so check the exact device, operating-system build, language and region before assuming a feature will appear.

Which iPhone supports Siri AI?
Apple’s announcements identify the software platforms but do not establish a complete list of eligible iPhone models. Do not treat a particular model—including iPhone 17 Pro—as a mandatory upgrade without checking Apple’s device-specific requirements for your country and the feature you want.
- Confirm that your iPhone supports the relevant Apple Intelligence features.
- Install the required iOS 27 release and any subsequent feature update.
- Check language and regional availability, since Apple can stage features by market.
- Look for the Siri AI option after updating; its presence is a better indicator than the model name alone.
What this means for privacy and processing
Apple Intelligence workloads can involve on-device processing and cloud processing, but the handling depends on the task and the protections Apple specifies for that workload. The Google collaboration does not mean every Siri request is handled identically to a request in the Gemini app, and it does not establish that all external models have the same privacy treatment.
When comparing Siri AI with a standalone Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT app, evaluate the actual path a request takes: which feature is invoked, whether processing is on-device or in the cloud, what account is used and what data-retention terms apply. Do not infer those details merely from the word “third-party.”
What to expect next
Apple’s confirmed direction is a system-level Siri AI built on Apple Intelligence, with Apple’s foundation-model work developed in collaboration with Google. Developers can connect apps through Apple’s integration frameworks. Broader user choice among rival assistant providers remains a possibility reported by Bloomberg, but it should be treated as unconfirmed until Apple documents a selectable-provider feature in its software or support materials.
