Apple’s rumored “Vision Air” headset was never an announced product. In April 2025, leaker Kosutami claimed that a thinner, lighter successor to the Vision Pro would use titanium in selected internal parts and arrive in a dark black or graphite-like finish. Later reporting in 2026 said the Vision Air project had been canceled or removed from Apple’s active headset roadmap, although a different, slimmer Vision Pro-style headset could still emerge much later.
What the original Vision Air leak claimed
Kosutami’s April 17, 2025 leak described a headset that would be thinner than Apple’s Vision Pro and use titanium in parts of its internal structure, connectors and battery-related assembly. The report did not say that the entire headset would be made from titanium. Much of the exterior was reportedly still aluminum.
The leak also described a dark finish—variously characterized as black, midnight or graphite blue-black—and included discussion of a darker charging connector. “Vision Air” was an informal name used in leak coverage, not a product name confirmed by Apple.
The evidence consisted of social-media posts and purported component imagery. It was not an Apple announcement, regulatory filing or independently verified teardown. The safest description is therefore that these were reported details about a prototype or planned product, not confirmed specifications for a shipping device. 9to5Mac’s original report contains the initial titanium, finish and connector claims.

Why titanium could help—but would not automatically make it lighter
Titanium is denser than aluminum, so “titanium” should not be treated as shorthand for “lighter.” Its potential advantage is its strength-to-weight ratio. A designer might use less material or make selected structural parts thinner while preserving stiffness.
That could help with connectors, mounts or internal supports, but a headset’s overall mass depends on far more than its frame. The displays and optical system, cameras, sensors, processor, thermal hardware, light seal, head strap, battery and cable all contribute. A titanium part could even increase weight if Apple used it without reducing volume elsewhere.
The leak provided no final mass, dimensions or complete bill of materials. It therefore cannot establish how much weight titanium would have saved.

How much lighter and cheaper was it supposed to be?
A separate September 2025 forecast from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that a proposed Vision Air could be more than 40% lighter than the Vision Pro and more than 50% cheaper. Using the Vision Pro’s approximately 1.375-pound headset weight, MacRumors noted that such a target would imply a device weighing under one pound—but that was an inference from a forecast, not a measured Vision Air specification.
Similarly, “50% cheaper” was not a confirmed retail price. Apple never published a price, release date or specification sheet for the rumored headset. Kuo’s 2025 forecast also pointed to a possible 2027 launch, but subsequent reporting superseded that expectation.
What “black” meant in the leak
The report did not establish an official Apple color name such as “Space Black.” Its descriptions pointed instead to a dark black, midnight or graphite-blue appearance, potentially similar to the dark finish associated with older Apple hardware.

That distinction matters because the reported exterior was still largely aluminum with a dark surface treatment, while titanium was primarily associated with internal components. A dark coating would not necessarily mean a black titanium enclosure.

A darker finish could make the headset look less conspicuous than the silver Vision Pro, but it could also make fingerprints, scratches and wear more visible. Thermal behavior would depend on the complete enclosure and cooling design, not simply on the color.
Vision Air was not the same as Apple’s rumored Mac-connected headset
April 2025 reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman described two possible Vision products. One was a lighter, cheaper headset intended to address the Vision Pro’s weight and price. The other was a Mac-connected headset designed for extremely low-latency professional applications, including possibilities such as surgical imaging or flight simulation.

These were reported as separate concepts. The titanium and dark-finish claims were associated with the presumed lighter model, not automatically with the Mac-connected device. The contemporaneous report on Apple’s headset plans did not turn either concept into an official product announcement.

The reports are not perfectly consistent. Gurman’s account leaves room for a future slimmer Vision Pro-style headset after the category was put “on ice.” Kuo’s later account describes the Vision headset successors as effectively removed from the active roadmap while Apple shifts attention toward glasses. Both accounts, however, agree that the old expectation of an imminent Vision Air launch is no longer reliable.

Is Vision Air still expected?
Not as an active, confirmed near-term product. As of August 18, 2026, there is no verified Apple release, price, final weight, color specification or launch date for Vision Air. Gurman’s reporting leaves open the possibility of a different lighter headset in late 2028 or 2029 at the earliest, while Kuo’s reporting points more strongly toward smart glasses.
This does not prove that Apple has abandoned spatial computing or will never make another headset. It does mean that the informal Vision Air project, as described in 2025, should be treated as canceled, superseded or at least no longer active under that name.
What prospective buyers should do
- Buy Vision Pro now only if you specifically want Apple’s current visionOS platform, spatial-video features and Apple ecosystem integration—and accept its premium price and headset weight. Apple’s U.S. starting price has been reported as $3,499.
- Consider Meta Quest 3 if affordable standalone VR and mixed reality matter more than visionOS or Apple hardware integration. Check the official Meta page for current price and availability.
- Wait if your main requirements are a substantially lighter and cheaper Apple headset. The old Vision Air leak is not a dependable near-term buying timeline.
Do not buy purported Vision Air accessories or preorder products based only on the leak. No compatible retail device has been verified, and Vision Pro accessories are not interchangeable with Quest 3 accessories.

The titanium and dark-finish details were plausible leak claims about a thinner Apple headset, and separate reporting supported the broader idea that Apple was exploring a lighter, cheaper Vision Pro successor. But titanium was never confirmed, “black” was not an official color specification, and the rumored weight and price targets were forecasts rather than measured facts.
The current picture is more cautious: Vision Air itself appears to have been canceled or removed from Apple’s active roadmap, while related headset work may have been delayed and Apple’s attention may be shifting toward smart glasses.
