Apple says the layer protects the display surface; replacement has been reported by Tom’s Guide, while MacRumors reports a $19 fee for U.S. AppleCare+ customers. That is not a confirmed do-it-yourself repair or the price for customers without coverage.
What exactly is replaceable?
Apple’s September 9, 2026 launch description places a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured polymer cover layer over the inner folding display. The layer is surface protection; Apple’s announcement does not say that the folding display panel itself is replaceable at the same price or by the same process. Apple says the nano-textured finish minimizes glare. It also describes its custom polymer as having up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry, a company-stated material comparison—not a real-world durability test.
Apple’s product announcement describes the layer and its purpose, but does not itself explain a replacement process. Tom’s Guide reported on October 1, 2026, that Apple VP of Hardware Engineering Kate Bergeron called it replaceable: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
Could it make the crease less noticeable?
Bergeron also told Tom’s Guide that the matte coating does a “really nice job” of minimizing the crease, while noting Apple engineered the cover layer to wear in as long a manner as possible and preserve its performance. That describes an intended benefit, not a promise that the crease disappears or that it will remain invisible over time. The cited reporting does not establish how the layer performs after long-term everyday use.

Can you replace the layer yourself?
Bergeron’s “peel off” description suggests the layer can be removed, but the cited reporting does not confirm that Apple intends customers to remove and install it themselves, explain a consumer procedure, or establish that an ordinary screen protector is an equivalent replacement. Treat this as a replaceable service component, not a verified DIY repair. Check Apple’s current service route before attempting to remove anything from the display.
