Apple CEO Tim Cook’s February 17, 2025 teaser promised the “newest member of the family” on Wednesday, February 19. The announcement was not an iPhone SE 4: Apple introduced the iPhone 16e, a lower-priced member of the iPhone 16 family.
The original “next week” wording is now historical. Apple opened U.S. preorders on February 21, 2025, and began sales on February 28.
What Apple actually teased
Cook posted: “Get ready to meet the newest member of the family. Wednesday, February 19. #AppleLaunch.” The post included a flowing, metallic-looking Apple logo but did not identify a product or invite people to a conventional keynote. Contemporary coverage treated it as a social-media product teaser, not confirmation of any particular device. Reporting at the time says the leading theory was a redesigned iPhone SE, with less likely guesses including an AirTag, a new color, or another accessory.

The February 19 announcement: iPhone 16e
Apple’s official announcement revealed the iPhone 16e. The name was significant. Rather than continuing the SE branding, Apple placed its entry model directly in the iPhone 16 lineup. That does not prove why Apple changed the branding, but it does signal that this phone was presented as a current-generation iPhone with selected compromises—not simply another small SE refresh.

Apple calls the camera system “two cameras in one,” but the phone has one rear camera system. Its 2x view is produced by the 48MP sensor; it is not a separate physical telephoto lens. Compared with higher-end iPhone 16 models, buyers give up the flexibility of additional rear cameras, including an ultra-wide option.

How it differs from the traditional iPhone SE
The iPhone 16e is a substantial design change from earlier SE generations. It uses a modern, edge-to-edge 6.1-inch OLED screen rather than the older compact body, replaces Touch ID with Face ID, switches from Lightning to USB-C, adds the Action button and supports Apple Intelligence through the A18 chip. Satellite safety features and the C1 modem are also new elements for this lower-priced position.

Those changes are not universal upgrades. Someone who wants a genuinely compact phone, a physical Home button or the lowest possible upfront price may prefer an older SE or another discounted model. The 16e is best understood as the successor to the SE’s affordable role, marketed under a different family name.

U.S. launch price and availability
Apple’s February 2025 launch figures were:

Apple also listed a financing example of $24.95 per month for 24 months. Carrier credits, trade-in values and any “up to $599” savings were promotion-dependent, not universal discounts. These are historical launch figures; current prices and stock can differ, so check the live Apple Store listing and carrier terms before buying.
Performance, battery and Apple Intelligence claims
Apple said the A18’s six-core CPU could be up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic in iPhone 11, and that its 16-core Neural Engine could run machine-learning models up to six times faster. Apple also claimed up to six additional hours of battery life versus iPhone 11 and up to 12 additional hours versus all iPhone SE generations.

Those are Apple’s comparison claims, not independent laboratory results. Actual battery life depends on network conditions, settings, apps and usage. “Supports Apple Intelligence” likewise does not mean every feature was available everywhere at launch: language, region, software version and rollout timing applied. Apple initially listed localized English availability in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, with further languages planned.

- Good fit: owners of older iPhones who want a modern 6.1-inch design, A18 performance, USB-C, Face ID, longer software support and satellite safety features without paying flagship launch prices.
- Consider alternatives: photographers who need an ultra-wide or more advanced multi-camera system; buyers seeking a high-refresh-rate premium display; people who want a phone smaller than 6.1 inches; or anyone for whom $599 remains too high.
Compare the 16e with a discounted standard iPhone 16, an Apple-refurbished model or a carrier installment offer using total cost—not just the monthly payment. Verify trade-in condition rules, plan requirements, lock-in periods, accessory compatibility and regional availability of satellite services and Apple Intelligence. USB-C may also require new cables or adapters for people moving from Lightning.

Bottom line
Apple’s deliberately vague February 17 teaser led many observers to expect an iPhone SE 4. The February 19 result was more consequential for Apple’s lineup: the affordable successor arrived as the iPhone 16e, bringing current-generation performance and safety features to a lower-priced 16-family model while accepting camera, display, color and size compromises.
