Short answer: the second-generation Apple Watch SE is still a capable, inexpensive smartwatch for notifications, workouts, activity tracking, sleep, Apple Pay and safety features. It is a much harder purchase to recommend in 2026, however, because Apple’s current compatibility list excludes it from watchOS 27. Buy one only when the price and battery condition clearly compensate for that shorter software runway; otherwise, choose the Apple Watch SE 3.
This is an evidence-based long-term buying guide rather than a fabricated first-person ownership diary. Individual battery life, comfort and durability depend on the particular watch, its battery health and how it is used.
What the Apple Watch SE 2 is
Apple introduced the second-generation Watch SE in 2022. It has an aluminum case in 40mm or 44mm sizes, GPS or GPS + Cellular connectivity, Apple’s 64-bit dual-core S8 SiP and 32GB of storage. Its Retina LTPO OLED display reaches up to 1,000 nits, and the watch includes a second-generation optical heart sensor, compass, always-on altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope and ambient-light sensor. Apple rates it as water-resistant to 50 meters and “swim-proof” under its stated conditions. The current technical specification lists an iPhone XS or later (including iPhone SE 2 or later) running iOS 18 or later as the phone requirement; requirements can change with newer watchOS releases. Apple’s specifications
It is an iPhone-only product. Android owners should not buy it expecting a standalone smartwatch.

Daily use: what it does well
The SE 2 covers the core Apple Watch experience: notifications, calls and messages, Apple Pay, timers, alarms, music and podcast controls, Maps, Siri, activity rings and workout tracking. The S8 chip and 32GB storage remain adequate for opening apps, starting workouts and handling ordinary notifications on watchOS 26. It is not a stripped-down fitness band.
Its strongest advantage is integration. When paired with an iPhone, messages, calendar alerts, authentication prompts and health data appear with little setup. Apple Pay and safety functions work from the wrist, and GPS models can record outdoor workouts while the phone is nearby. GPS + Cellular models can call, message and stream away from the iPhone after setup, provided the carrier supports Apple Watch service and you pay for an additional plan.
Expect the normal Apple Watch compromise: the watch reduces some phone checking but does not replace an iPhone. Third-party app availability and Siri behavior also depend on the current software and network connection.
Display and design compromises
The most noticeable omission is the lack of an always-on display. The screen turns off when your wrist is down, so you must raise or tap it to see the time or workout data. That is usually fine at a desk, but inconvenient during meetings, exercise or whenever your wrist is partly covered.
The bezels are thicker than on newer premium models. The case is aluminum-only, with Ion-X glass rather than the sapphire crystal used on some higher-end watches. There are no stainless-steel or titanium options. The watch is light and familiar, but it does not look or feel like a Series or Ultra model.

The 40mm version weighs 26.4g in GPS form; the 44mm weighs 32.9g. Both are 10.7mm deep. Choose 40mm for a smaller, lighter fit. The 44mm provides larger text and touch targets and is easier to read during workouts. Apple does not give it a different official battery rating, and used-market condition may matter more than the size difference.
Health, fitness and safety
The SE 2 supports heart-rate monitoring, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, sleep tracking with sleep stages, activity rings, workout recording, noise monitoring, medication and Mindfulness apps, compass and elevation data. Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS are important safety features, though availability can vary by region, language and setup.

It is suitable for walking, running, cycling, gym sessions and ordinary swim tracking. Do not treat its readings as a diagnosis or as medical-grade measurement.
What it cannot do
The missing hardware matters more than the S8 processor. The SE 2 has no ECG, wrist-temperature sensor, sleep-apnea notifications or other newer sensor-dependent health functions. It also lacks an always-on display and faster charging found on newer models. Software cannot add ECG or temperature sensing because the required sensors are not present. Apple notes that health features vary by country, language and device; check the comparison page for your market.
Battery life and charging
Apple’s official rating is up to 18 hours. Its controlled scenario includes 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout with music over 18 hours. The GPS + Cellular test includes four hours of LTE use and 14 hours connected to an iPhone. That is a laboratory estimate, not a promise of a full day for every owner. Apple’s test details

Workouts using GPS, cellular streaming, frequent notifications, sleep tracking and an aging battery can shorten endurance substantially. Low Power Mode can extend runtime, but some background measurements and connected features are reduced.
Charging to 80 percent takes about 1.5 hours according to Apple. Sleep tracking makes charging routine more important: many owners charge while showering, eating breakfast or working at a desk, then wear the watch overnight. A separate magnetic charging cable is useful for travel.
For a used or refurbished unit, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity. Around 90 percent is generally a healthier starting point than a watch near 80 percent, but capacity is not the only warning sign. Unexpected shutdowns, rapid percentage drops, heat or a battery that cannot complete a workout are reasons to return the watch or negotiate a lower price. Do not assume Apple will provide a particular battery-repair outcome without checking current service terms.
Water resistance and durability
The SE 2 is rated to 50 meters and marketed as swim-proof, not waterproof. Water resistance can decline after impacts, chemical exposure and age. Apple advises against high-velocity water, steam rooms and similar conditions. A used watch with an unknown impact history is a greater swimming risk, and water damage may not be covered as buyers expect.
Inspect the display and case for cracks or deep dents. Test the Digital Crown, side button, touchscreen, speaker, microphone, GPS and heart-rate sensor before the return period ends.

The 2026 software problem
The SE 2 remains compatible with watchOS 26. Apple’s current watchOS 27 compatibility list, however, includes the SE 3, Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later—not the SE 2. That means the SE 2 should be treated as a device at the end of its major-version support runway.
Existing features do not suddenly stop working because a new major release is unavailable. The watch can still be useful on watchOS 26. But future features, app requirements and the timing of security updates are less certain. Apple does not promise a fixed number of years of security support, so avoid buying the SE 2 on the assumption that it will receive several more major updates.
SE 2 versus SE 3
Apple’s direct successor, the SE 3, starts at $249 for a 40mm GPS model in the United States, with 44mm GPS from $279 and GPS + Cellular from $299 on the current buying page. It offers a newer platform, longer expected support horizon, faster charging and an always-on display. See Apple’s current SE pricing
If an SE 2 costs only a little less than $249, buy the SE 3. The older watch becomes defensible when it is substantially discounted, has documented battery health and comes with a meaningful return window. In the used market, a healthy SE 2 can be a better purchase than an older premium Series watch with a badly degraded battery.

Choosing GPS or Cellular
- GPS: the sensible choice if you normally carry an iPhone and want the lowest cost for workouts, notifications and activity tracking.
- GPS + Cellular: worthwhile if you regularly run, cycle or travel without your phone, or need independent calls, messages and emergency communication. It costs more and requires a supported carrier plan. The watch still needs an iPhone for setup and normal ecosystem use.
Buying used or refurbished
Before paying, confirm all of the following:
- Activation Lock has been removed and the watch pairs with your iPhone.
- Battery Health is visible and the maximum capacity is acceptable.
- The display, case, Crown, side button, touchscreen, speaker and microphone work.
- GPS, heart-rate tracking and workout recording function normally.
- The charger is included or priced into the deal.
- A cellular model is not carrier-locked or impossible to activate.
- The watch is not managed by a company or school.
- The seller offers a genuine return period.
Apple’s own refurbished stock has included SE 2 units, but availability, colors, sizes and prices change. Apple refurbished example

- Families seeking a lower-cost watch where cellular setup and regional requirements are supported.
- Anyone buying a temporary or inexpensive Apple Watch at a genuinely low price.
Who should skip it?
- Buyers who want ECG, temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications or an always-on display.
- Heavy sleep trackers buying a used unit with poor battery health.
- Athletes who need multi-day endurance.
- Android users.
- Anyone prioritizing the longest possible software support.
- Anyone paying close to SE 3 pricing.
Other alternatives
Apple Watch SE 3: the default choice for most new buyers because it is newer and has a longer support horizon.
Apple Watch Series 11: a better fit for ECG, an always-on display and more advanced health capabilities. Apple’s current material lists it from $399. Pay the premium for those features, not merely for notifications.
Refurbished Series 7, 8 or 9: potentially better hardware, but battery condition and remaining support are critical. Do not assume an older premium model is automatically better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGarmin or Fitbit: worth considering if multi-day battery life, training metrics or Android compatibility matter more than iPhone integration, Apple Pay and Apple’s safety ecosystem.
Verdict
The Apple Watch SE 2 is still good to use, but it is no longer an easy recommendation to buy. Its core smartwatch, fitness and safety functions remain capable, while the missing sensors and always-on display are acceptable for many casual users. The decisive issue in 2026 is value: watchOS 27 excludes it, and the SE 3 starts at $249 in the United States.
Buy the SE 2 only when the discount is substantial, battery health is documented and you accept staying on the watchOS 26 branch. Otherwise, the SE 3 is the more sensible entry point.
