Apple released tvOS 26.1 for Apple TV and HomePod Software 26.1 for HomePod and HomePod mini. Apple’s public notes describe both as performance and stability updates, not major feature releases. Version 26.1 has since been superseded: as of August 18, 2026, Apple TV and HomePod users should install the latest stable version offered for their device rather than look specifically for 26.1.
What tvOS 26.1 changed
Apple’s tvOS update history describes version 26.1 as bringing performance and stability improvements. The public notes do not identify a new Apple TV feature or specify a consumer-facing bug fix, so there is no basis to attribute a particular Siri, AirPlay, audio, or Apple Home change to this release.
Apple’s developer release notes list fixes involving Background Assets and AssetPackManager.url(for:), Game Controller timestamp handling, and SwiftUI—including a crash involving navigationLinkIndicatorVisibility and a sheet-presentation issue. These are SDK and app-development details, not a list of new features ordinary Apple TV users should expect to see.
What HomePod Software 26.1 changed
Apple’s HomePod update history lists performance and stability improvements. It does not announce a new Siri capability, audio feature, Home app redesign, or home-theater function specifically for version 26.1.

The names matter: Apple calls the Apple TV update tvOS 26.1 and the speaker update HomePod Software 26.1. HomePod does not receive an update officially named “tvOS 26.1.” Each product has its own update mechanism.
26.1 is no longer the version to look for
Apple has released later 26.x software since these maintenance updates. Contemporary reporting records tvOS 26.6 and HomePod Software 26.6 on July 27, 2026 (9to5Mac). A device checking for updates now may therefore offer a later release, or already have one installed. That does not mean 26.1 failed to install.

For most people, the practical choice is to install the latest stable update Apple offers for the device. Updates may include reliability, compatibility, and security changes even when public notes are brief. If your Apple Home setup depends on complex automations, a HomePod stereo pair, or HomePod as Apple TV audio output, waiting briefly after a newly released update to check for reported issues is a reasonable precaution—not an Apple requirement.
How to update Apple TV
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Go to System and select Software Updates.
- Choose Update Software.
- If an update is available, choose the on-screen download and install option.
Keep Apple TV connected to power and the internet while it updates. Menu wording can vary slightly by model or software version. Check the version shown in Software Updates or under About, then compare it with Apple’s Apple TV update history.

How to update HomePod or HomePod mini
HomePod and HomePod mini update automatically by default. To check manually, use the Home app on an updated iPhone, iPad, or Mac:
- Open the Home app and select More.
- Choose Home Settings, then Software Update.
- If an update is listed, select Update.
Apple says a white spinning light appears on top of HomePod while an update installs. Keep the speaker connected to power until it finishes. The Home app’s Software Update screen shows the installed HomePod software version. See Apple’s HomePod update instructions for current steps.

Home hub and smart-home considerations
Apple TV and HomePod can serve as Apple Home hubs. That makes their software relevant not only to TV playback and speaker behavior, but also to remote access and smart-home reliability. For Thread-enabled Matter accessories, Apple identifies a compatible Thread-enabled home hub—such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet—as a requirement; see Apple’s home hub and Matter guidance. Compatibility depends on the specific hardware, so do not assume every older Apple TV or HomePod supports every later major software release.

If an update is missing or Home reports an update requirement
- No update appears: Check internet access and power, confirm the device is not already on a later version, and check whether its controlling iPhone, iPad, or Mac needs an update. Beta enrollment can also affect which update channel or version appears.
- Home says “Software Update Required” or “Home Hub Required”: Identify the active hub in Home app → More → Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges and update it. Apple’s home hub troubleshooting guidance includes temporarily connecting an Ethernet-connected Apple TV to Wi-Fi as a troubleshooting step for certain hub issues.
- HomePod seems stuck: Do not unplug it immediately if its update light is active. Allow the installation time to finish; if it has clearly stalled, restart the HomePod and check the Home app again. If it remains unresponsive, follow Apple’s troubleshooting or service guidance rather than starting with an unsupported reset.
