Apple released iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, watchOS 26.4, and tvOS 26.4 on March 24, 2026. The coordinated update brought Apple Music features, accessibility changes, and other additions to iPhone and iPad, alongside bug fixes and security updates across Apple’s platforms. These original builds have since been superseded by later 26.x releases, so a device checking for updates today may offer a newer version.
Apple’s 26.4 rollout at a glance
Apple published the five updates on the same day. Their build numbers identify the original March 24 releases:

What changed in iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4?
Apple’s consumer update summary lists features for iPhone and iPad, though availability can differ by region, language, device, Apple Music access, and account configuration. The list below describes Apple’s announced additions, not a guarantee that every feature appears for every user. Apple’s update summary and its UK and Ireland pages show regional differences.
Apple Music additions
- Playlist Playground beta: Create a playlist from a description; Apple Music supplies a title, description, and track list.
- Concerts: Discover nearby shows by artists in your library and get recommendations for other artists.
- Offline Music Recognition: A Control Center recognition request can return its result after connectivity is restored.
- Ambient Music widget: Access playlists for Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing.
- Full-screen backgrounds: Supported album and playlist pages can use full-screen artwork.
Accessibility, typing, and other updates
- Reduce Bright Effects adds an accessibility setting. Apple also says Reduce Motion behaves more reliably with Liquid Glass animations.
- Subtitle and caption settings are easier to reach from the captions control while watching media.
- Eight new emoji include an orca, trombone, landslide, ballet dancer, and distorted face.
- Freeform gains additional image-creation and editing tools and a premium content library connected with Apple Creator Studio.
- Reminders can be marked urgent, and urgent items can be filtered in Smart Lists.
- Purchase Sharing lets adult members of a Family Sharing group use their own payment method for purchases.
- Apple says keyboard accuracy improves when typing quickly.
- The update adds support for AirPods Max 2.
The consumer-facing release material does not establish a substantial set of iPad-exclusive headline features. The shared iPhone and iPad feature summary is a better guide than assuming that every feature is unique to one device or that iPad received a separate multitasking overhaul. macOS Tahoe 26.4: confirmed release details
Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.4 as build 25E246 on March 24, 2026. Apple’s release and security listings confirm the update, but the cited consumer material does not provide a complete feature-by-feature summary for this Mac release. It is safest to describe it as a maintenance and security update rather than assign it unverified Mac-specific features. Check Apple’s security releases for the security information associated with the version.
Not every Mac that can run an earlier macOS release qualifies for Tahoe. Use Apple’s macOS compatibility information to check a specific model. On March 24, Apple also listed security updates for macOS Sequoia 15.7.5 and macOS Sonoma 14.8.5, so Mac owners who could not install Tahoe had branch-specific updates to consider.

watchOS 26.4: compatibility and what is confirmed
watchOS 26.4, build 23T240, arrived on March 24, 2026. Apple’s security release listing says it supports Apple Watch Series 6 and later. The cited release information confirms the update and its security-maintenance context, but does not establish a detailed watch-specific feature list. Check Apple’s watchOS security and compatibility information and current watchOS update guidance for paired-iPhone requirements before installing.
tvOS 26.4: compatible Apple TV models
Apple released tvOS 26.4, build 23L243, on March 24. The supported hardware is Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models, according to Apple’s security-release listing. The cited official material does not establish a definitive list of consumer-facing tvOS 26.4 feature changes, so claims about particular TV interface or audio additions should not be treated as confirmed here.

Which devices can install 26.4?
These are Apple’s listed compatibility ranges for the named platforms. Model eligibility does not mean every feature is available on every compatible device.

How to check for the update
Because later versions have superseded the original 26.4 builds, these paths may show a newer update instead.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > General > Software Update, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Mac: Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings > General > Software Update, and select an offered update.
- Apple Watch: On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app and go to My Watch > General > Software Update. Follow Apple’s current instructions if the update cannot be verified or installed.
- Apple TV: Open Settings > System > Software Updates and check for an update.
Before installing—and if an update does not appear
Prepare the device
- Back up an iPhone or iPad to iCloud or a computer before installing.
- Make sure there is enough free storage and that portable devices are connected to power.
- For Apple Watch, keep the watch on its charger and near its paired iPhone. Follow Apple’s specific requirements for the paired iPhone and connection.
- Check whether work, school, banking, VPN, or specialist apps have known compatibility issues. If you rely on the device for a trip, presentation, or deadline, avoid updating immediately beforehand.
Apple notes that updates can affect performance or battery life, and its mobile, watch, and TV operating systems generally cannot be downgraded after installation. See Apple’s update and security information and its iOS 26.4 update notes.
Check common causes
If Software Update offers nothing, the device may be incompatible, already running a later release, managed by an employer or school, on a beta channel, short on storage, or unable to complete its network or verification checks. A feature may also be unavailable because of region, language, device, subscription, or account settings. For a managed device, check with the organization’s administrator; for installation errors, use Apple’s support instructions for that specific device rather than interrupting or forcing an update.

Should you install 26.4 now?
Do not seek out the original 26.4 build if a later compatible update is offered. Apple classifies these releases as including bug fixes and security updates, and later releases followed them. Install the newest version offered for your device after checking compatibility and app readiness. Devices that cannot run the latest major platform may still receive updates for an older software branch; Apple listed iOS and iPadOS 18.7.7, macOS Sequoia 15.7.5, and macOS Sonoma 14.8.5 among updates on March 24, 2026.
