The 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s base M4 chip is still an excellent compact laptop, especially for its vivid 120Hz XDR display, useful built-in ports, strong battery life and fast everyday performance. But it is a 2024 model, and Apple has since moved the 14-inch line to M5. In 2026, the M4 makes sense when it is meaningfully cheaper than an equivalent M5—or offers more memory or storage for the same money—not at a price close to the newer generation.
Quick verdict
Best for: developers with moderate workloads, photographers, musicians, office power users and people who want a high-quality display and ports in a portable Mac.
Less suited to: basic users who can save money with a MacBook Air, or professionals who regularly render, compile large projects, run several virtual machines or edit demanding video and would benefit from an M4 Pro or newer Pro-class chip.

Which 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro is this?
The base M4 configuration has a 10-core CPU (four performance cores and six efficiency cores), a 10-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine and 120GB/s of memory bandwidth. It was offered with 16GB, 24GB or 32GB of unified memory, and SSD capacities from 512GB through 8TB depending on configuration. Finish choices include Space Black and Silver; a nano-texture display option was also available on selected configurations.
These details matter: memory and storage are selected at purchase, not upgraded later. And a base M4 is not an M4 Pro. The latter has more processing resources and memory bandwidth, making it a better fit for sustained heavy work. Design and portability
The M4 keeps the MacBook Pro’s established aluminum unibody design; it is a refinement, not a new chassis generation. The compact 14-inch-class body feels substantial and rigid, with a stable hinge, a spacious haptic trackpad and a comfortable keyboard with Touch ID. Space Black looks understated, though its darker finish can show fingerprints more readily than Silver.
It is not as light or thin as a MacBook Air. That extra bulk buys active cooling, more ports and a more capable display. If you mostly write, browse and attend calls, the Air’s lower weight and fanless silence may matter more. If you carry memory cards, connect a monitor or run long workloads, the Pro’s added capability is easier to justify.
The display is the strongest reason to choose Pro over Air
The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR panel runs at 3024 × 1964 pixels (254 ppi), supports a wide color gamut and True Tone, and uses ProMotion for adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. Scrolling and interface motion look smoother than on a conventional 60Hz display; the benefit is pleasant in everyday use as well as when working with motion or a responsive creative interface.
Its local-dimming HDR behavior can produce bright highlights and deep blacks, making HDR video look striking. Apple specifies up to 1,000 nits of sustained SDR brightness and up to 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness for the display family. Those are different measurements under specified conditions, not a promise that every full-screen image will appear at those levels in every mode. The glossy surface can reflect windows and overhead lights, especially in bright rooms.

The panel is excellent for laptop photo and video work, but it is not automatically a calibrated reference monitor. For color-critical delivery, use a calibrated workflow and, where appropriate, a dedicated reference display. The notch at the top houses the camera; it intrudes into the menu-bar area but is generally less noticeable in full-screen content.
Nano-texture glass can reduce distracting reflections in a bright office, near a window or while traveling. It is a situational upgrade rather than a universal improvement: weigh glare reduction against its added cost and the need to handle and clean the surface carefully. If you usually work indoors with controllable lighting, standard glossy glass is likely the better value.
M4 performance: fast for most work, not a workstation chip
For browsing with many tabs, office apps, multitasking, photo editing, music production and ordinary software development, the base M4 has ample speed. Short actions—opening apps, navigating large documents and handling many everyday tasks—feel responsive. It can also handle moderate video editing and creative projects.
That does not make it the right MacBook Pro for every professional. Rendering, long video exports, large code builds, complex 3D scenes, big audio sessions, multiple virtual machines and demanding local AI workloads can keep the CPU or GPU busy for a long time. The M4 Pro’s extra cores and greater memory bandwidth are more valuable in those sustained tasks. A quick burst of speed and sustained performance over a long render are not the same thing.
The Pro has active cooling, unlike a fanless Air. Under prolonged CPU or GPU load, its fans can become audible; the benefit is that cooling can help it maintain performance through heavy work. Don’t buy it expecting complete silence during a long export. For everyday office use the fans are less central to the experience, while a fanless Air remains the quieter choice.

Memory deserves careful thought because unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and the rest of the system, and cannot be replaced later. Sixteen gigabytes is reasonable for general productivity, study, coding and moderate creative work. Developers juggling containers, people who keep large projects and many applications open, and those using virtual machines should consider 24GB or 32GB. For unusually demanding workloads, compare the cost of a higher-memory base model with stepping up to an M4 Pro or a newer Pro-tier chip.

Battery life and charging
The battery is rated at 72.4 watt-hours. Apple’s stated maximums are up to 16 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 24 hours of video streaming. These are controlled-test results, not a mixed-use guarantee: Apple’s cited testing used a 14-inch M4 system with 24GB of memory and a 1TB SSD. Brightness, video calls, browser activity, HDR, external displays and sustained creative work can all reduce runtime. In practical terms, long battery life is one of the machine’s strengths, but a day of heavy editing or compiling is not equivalent to Apple’s web-browsing test. MagSafe 3 provides a dedicated charging connection, leaving the Thunderbolt ports available for peripherals.
Ports and external displays
The base M4 model includes three Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, MagSafe 3, HDMI, an SDXC card slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. HDMI and SDXC are particularly useful for monitor connections and camera-card transfers without carrying a dongle. Thunderbolt 4 is not Thunderbolt 5, and a desktop setup may still need a dock for Ethernet or several peripherals.

Camera, speakers and everyday controls
The 12MP Center Stage camera is a useful improvement for video calls: it can keep you framed as you move, and supported video features can offer a view of your desk. It is still a built-in laptop camera, not a replacement for dedicated equipment when recording polished video. The microphone system is suitable for calls, while the speaker system is a strong built-in option for a laptop, with clear stereo sound and more body than most thin notebooks. The keyboard, large haptic trackpad and Touch ID complete a polished daily-use experience.
macOS and Apple Intelligence
The M4 supports Apple Intelligence features available for compatible hardware, but their availability depends on the installed macOS version, language, region, account requirements and the feature itself. Some tasks may require an internet connection or use cloud processing. Treat Apple Intelligence as an extra, not the main reason to buy this particular Mac: feature access and usefulness vary, and the label does not mean every local AI model will run well. Local performance depends on model size, memory and software optimization.

Which configuration should you buy?
- 16GB / 512GB: the sensible entry point for study, office work, browsing, moderate coding and light creative work—especially at a substantial discount. It is less comfortable for large virtual machines or heavier long-term multitasking.
- 24GB / 1TB: a more flexible choice for developers, photographers and musicians working with larger projects or several demanding apps. It balances memory headroom and internal space without requiring the largest upgrades.
- 32GB: consider it for serious video projects, virtual machines, large audio sessions or local AI experimentation. If your workload needs more than the base M4’s capabilities, compare a Pro-tier chip rather than assuming memory alone will solve it.
- More than 1TB: worthwhile if large media libraries, sample libraries, offline projects or virtual machines must stay on the laptop. Otherwise, an external SSD can be more economical, provided carrying separate storage suits your workflow.
If choosing between more memory and a larger internal SSD, prioritize memory when your applications and workload are likely to grow: memory is shared and cannot be upgraded. External storage can expand capacity later; internal memory cannot.

M4 versus the alternatives in 2026
14-inch MacBook Pro with M5
M5 is the newer generation and the safer default when prices are close: it offers a newer purchase and likely a longer resale and support runway, though no precise support period should be assumed. Apple’s refurbished store showed an M5 14-inch configuration with 16GB and 512GB for $1,359 when the cited listing was viewed; that is a time-sensitive snapshot, not a current price promise. MacBook Air
Choose an Air for ordinary productivity, study, travel and light creative work if you do not need the Pro’s XDR/120Hz display, HDMI, SDXC or active cooling. It is lighter, fanless and generally less expensive. Choose the Pro when its display, connectivity or sustained workload capability will improve your actual day.
Refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro
A refurbished M4 Pro can be a better work machine than a base M4 or M5 for a person who regularly needs more sustained CPU/GPU performance. Apple’s refurbished listings showed a 14-inch M4 Pro configuration with a 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU for $1,779 when viewed; availability and price vary. Windows creator and developer laptops
A premium Windows laptop may be the better option if you depend on Windows-only software, want gaming or a discrete GPU, or value upgradeability. Windows models vary widely in screen technology, battery life, weight, cooling and ports, so compare specific configurations for your applications rather than assuming one platform is universally faster or better. The MacBook Pro’s strongest case is its combination of display, battery efficiency, build, ports and Apple ecosystem integration.
Who should buy the M4 14-inch MacBook Pro?
- Students and office users: buy only if you particularly want the display and ports; an Air will cover many routine needs for less.
- Developers: base M4 suits moderate development. Choose more memory or a Pro chip for large builds, containers and virtual machines.
- Photographers: the sharp, bright display and SDXC slot are convenient; choose sufficient memory and storage for your library and editing workflow.
- Video editors and 3D users: suitable for moderate or mobile work, but frequent heavy renders, multicamera 4K/8K projects or complex scenes point toward M4 Pro/M5 Pro or a higher-tier system.
- Musicians: the base model can be a capable production laptop; large sample libraries and demanding sessions favor more memory and storage.
- Frequent travelers: it offers a compact pro feature set and strong battery potential, though the Air is lighter and the glossy screen can reflect bright surroundings.
- Local AI users: check the precise software and model requirements. A 16GB base configuration is not a universal local-AI machine; memory and workload scale matter.
- Owners of older Macs: an upgrade may be compelling if you need its display, ports, performance or battery improvements. Owners of a recent capable Mac should compare the benefits against the cost rather than upgrading for the M4 name alone.
Buying new or refurbished
Do not pay close to the newer M5’s price for a base M4 with the same memory and storage. A small price gap favors M5; a large gap can make M4 compelling, particularly if the M4 deal includes more memory or storage. Compare refurbished M4 Pro options too if your work is sustained and demanding. Avoid treating any price seen on a product page as permanent: stock and pricing change.
For a used or refurbished laptop, verify battery cycle count and maximum capacity, warranty and return period, Activation Lock status, keyboard layout, display condition, memory, SSD size, and included charger and cable. Apple’s cited Certified Refurbished listing specified a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns; check the terms for the actual product and region before purchase. AppleCare+ may be worth considering for a costly laptop carried daily, but compare the local plan price, accidental-damage terms and deductible with your risk and ownership period. Final verdict
The 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 remains a superb all-round portable Mac: its screen is a standout, the port selection is unusually practical, battery life is strong, and the base chip is fast enough for a wide range of professional and everyday work. Its limits are just as important: the base M4 is not an M4 Pro, memory is fixed, and the model is no longer current in 2026. Buy it when a genuine discount makes the display-and-port package compelling; if the price is close to M5, choose the newer generation.
