The Apple M5 9-core is a real M5 system-on-chip configuration, but it is not a standalone processor sold separately. The configuration is associated with certain lower-storage M5 iPad Pro models and combines three performance cores with six efficiency cores. In a tested M5 iPad Pro with 12GB of RAM, it recorded 4,133 in Geekbench 6 single-core, 15,437 in multi-core and approximately 3,137,940 in AnTuTu v10.
The key buying caveat is configuration: these scores describe a particular iPad Pro, not every M5 device. Apple’s M5 MacBook Air, for example, uses a 10-core CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores.
What is the Apple M5 9-core processor?
The Apple M5 9-core is the CPU portion of an Apple M5 system-on-chip (SoC). It is integrated into an Apple device rather than being a socketed Intel- or AMD-style retail processor that consumers can purchase and install independently.

GPU and Neural Engine
The 9-core CPU configuration is reported with a 10-core integrated GPU. That is important because fewer CPU cores do not automatically mean fewer GPU cores or proportionally lower graphics performance. Notebookcheck’s M5 GPU database identifies the 10-core M5 GPU across both 9-core and 10-core CPU variants.

Single-core performance is most relevant to many everyday interactions, including browser responsiveness, app launches and lightly threaded tasks. Multi-core performance matters more for exports, rendering, compiling, batch processing and other workloads that can use several cores simultaneously.
Geekbench results should always include the version. Geekbench 6.7 scores should not be directly combined with Geekbench 6.5, 6.6 or Geekbench 7 results as though they were interchangeable. Individual submissions can also vary because of software updates, thermal state, background processes and power conditions.
AnTuTu v10
| Test | Reported score |
|---|---|
| AnTuTu v10 total | Approximately 3,137,940 |
| AnTuTu v10 CPU | Approximately 1,002,257 |
AnTuTu is a composite benchmark rather than a pure CPU test. Its total score includes CPU, GPU, memory and user-experience components, and is influenced by the operating system, storage and benchmark version. It should not be compared directly with a Geekbench score.

- Single-core performance: likely very similar when the active performance core, software and power conditions are comparable.
- Multi-core performance: lower on the 9-core version during heavily parallel workloads because it has one fewer performance core.
- Everyday use: the difference is unlikely to make normal browsing, office work or app interaction feel dramatically slower.
- Graphics: the 9-core CPU does not necessarily have a weaker GPU; the documented iPad Pro configuration has a 10-core GPU.
One fewer core does not mean one-ninth less real-world performance. Workloads scale differently, and efficiency cores, scheduling, cooling and software optimization all affect the result. The 9-core M5 is best understood as a modestly reduced CPU configuration.
M5 9-core versus M4
The fairest comparison is an M5 9-core iPad Pro against an M4 iPad Pro tested under the same conditions. Match the device type, Geekbench version, iPadOS release, memory capacity and CPU-core configuration wherever possible. A MacBook M4 result is not a like-for-like substitute for an iPad Pro result.
Apple’s M5 MacBook Air announcement claims up to 15% faster multithreaded performance than M4 for that Mac configuration. This is an Apple-selected MacBook Air comparison and should not be presented as a guaranteed gain for the 9-core iPad Pro. Independent results can differ according to workload and test setup. The claim is documented in Apple’s M5 MacBook Air announcement.
Real-world performance
Where it excels
- Web browsing, email, documents and office applications
- Multitasking between iPadOS applications
- Photo editing and illustration in supported apps such as Procreate
- 4K video editing in compatible iPad applications
- On-device AI features and supported machine-learning workloads
- iPadOS gaming, provided the game supports the platform and its graphics features
For tablet use, the 9-core M5 should provide substantial headroom. The benchmark numbers indicate very high CPU performance, while the 10-core GPU supports demanding graphics workloads.

Where the iPad can still be limiting
A fast processor cannot remove iPadOS restrictions. Desktop-only applications, large software-development environments, virtual machines, traditional desktop file workflows and some specialist peripherals may work better on macOS.
Long-running CPU-heavy tasks also deserve caution. A fanless tablet can produce excellent short benchmark results but may behave differently from a Mac with a larger thermal design during extended rendering, compiling or batch exports. A single benchmark score is not a sustained-performance test.
Should you buy an M5 iPad Pro with the 9-core CPU?
Choose it if you want an iPad-first device for creative work, Apple Pencil use, touch interaction, mobile productivity, media consumption and supported iPadOS applications. For many buyers, the 9-core M5 is already more than fast enough.
Consider an M5 MacBook Air if you need macOS, desktop software, conventional multitasking and a 10-core M5 CPU. Apple announced the MacBook Air from $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model in the United States at launch; current pricing should be checked on Apple’s MacBook Air page.
Consider a MacBook Pro or another higher-tier Mac for sustained professional workloads, larger memory requirements, virtual machines, demanding development environments or software that is unavailable on iPadOS. In either case, RAM and storage may matter more to the buying decision than the difference between nine and ten CPU cores.
