Apple is not remotely disabling Intel Macs. The change is that macOS Tahoe 26 is the final major macOS release compatible with Intel-based Macs. The next major release, macOS 27, is expected in fall 2026 and requires Apple silicon, with the A18 Pro-powered MacBook Neo as a separate exception.
Intel Macs that support Tahoe should continue to receive security maintenance for a limited period—roughly three years after macOS 27 replaces Tahoe, pointing to around fall 2028. That is an approximate support window, not a guaranteed final patch date. Intel Macs will continue to boot and run afterward, but their software, browser, driver, and security-tool compatibility will gradually decline.
The short version
- macOS Tahoe 26 is the last major macOS release for Intel Macs.
- macOS 27 will not be offered to Intel Macs. It requires Apple silicon, apart from the A18 Pro-based MacBook Neo.
- Intel Macs will not suddenly stop working. Existing apps, files, displays, and peripherals should continue working while their software remains compatible.
- Security support will continue temporarily. The expected Tahoe maintenance window is about three years after macOS 27 arrives, but Apple has not provided a precise universal end date.
- Not every Intel Mac can run Tahoe. Older models have already stopped at Sequoia, Sonoma, Ventura, or an earlier macOS release.
The practical conclusion is simple: an Intel Mac is entering a maintenance phase, not an instant shutdown. Whether you should replace it depends on its exact model, current macOS version, software needs, and security exposure.
When does Intel Mac support end?
“Intel Mac support” covers several different things, and they do not end on the same day.

Major macOS upgrades
This part has a clear cutoff. Tahoe 26 is the final major macOS version that supports Intel hardware. When macOS 27 arrives, Software Update will not offer it to Intel Macs. A supported Intel Mac will remain on Tahoe instead.
Apple began moving from Intel processors to Apple silicon with the first M1 Macs in 2020. The transition is now complete for major macOS releases: future features and hardware-specific technologies are being designed around Apple silicon.
Security updates
Apple’s support model normally provides maintenance and security updates to older macOS releases for a period after a new major version launches. Based on Apple’s stated support direction and current reporting, Tahoe’s Intel-compatible maintenance runway should be approximately three years after macOS 27 replaces it—roughly through fall 2028.

That estimate applies to Intel Macs that can run Tahoe. It does not mean every Intel Mac will receive security updates until 2028. A Mac that is already stuck on Sequoia or an older release has an earlier practical end-of-life timeline.
Safari and Apple apps
Security maintenance does not guarantee feature parity. New Safari versions, Apple apps, and macOS services may eventually require a newer macOS release. Once Tahoe falls outside Apple’s current support range, browser compatibility and web security become increasingly important concerns.
Third-party applications
Developers set their own requirements. A professional creative application, browser, game, VPN client, password manager, antivirus product, printer utility, cloud-sync tool, or plug-in may drop Intel support—or require macOS 27—before Apple stops patching Tahoe.

For this reason, there is no single date on which every Intel Mac becomes unusable. Compatibility will erode application by application.

Operating-system support is separate from Apple’s hardware-service and parts-availability policies. Do not assume that Apple repairs or parts availability end when major macOS support ends, or that they continue for a specific number of years without checking Apple’s current service information for the exact model.
Which Intel Macs can run macOS Tahoe 26?
Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list includes only these Intel Mac models:

All other Macs on Apple’s Tahoe list use Apple silicon. Configuration details matter: a 2019 MacBook Pro is not automatically supported, and a 2020 13-inch MacBook Pro may be an Intel four-port model, an Intel two-port model, or an M1 model. Verify the exact machine instead of relying on its purchase year.
Intel Macs already excluded from Tahoe
Examples include 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air models, most 2018 and 2019 MacBook Pro configurations, the 2018 Mac mini, most 2019 iMac configurations, the 2017 iMac Pro, and older Intel Macs. Apple’s macOS compatibility page identifies the latest officially supported release for each model.

- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose About This Mac.
- Record the Mac model, screen size, model year, processor or chip, and installed macOS version.
- Compare the exact model with Apple’s Tahoe compatibility list and the latest macOS compatibility page.
Intel Macs identify an Intel processor. Apple-silicon Macs identify an Apple M-series chip. The MacBook Neo uses an A18 Pro chip, so it is not an Intel Mac even though it is outside the usual M-series shorthand.

To see the installed build number, open About This Mac and click the macOS version. Apple’s support page explains the current-version and model-identification process.
Checking for a T2 chip
Some late Intel Macs have Apple’s T2 Security Chip. It helped certain Intel models qualify for Tahoe, but it does not make an Intel Mac eligible for macOS 27.
To check, hold Option while opening the Apple menu, choose System Information, select Controller or iBridge, and look for Apple T2 chip. Apple lists T2-equipped Intel families including MacBook Pro models from 2018–2020, MacBook Air models from 2018–2020, the 2020 27-inch iMac, iMac Pro, 2018 Mac mini, and 2019 Mac Pro.

What happens when macOS 27 arrives?
On an Intel Mac that supports Tahoe:
- Software Update will not offer macOS 27.
- The Mac will remain on Tahoe 26.
- Apple will continue limited maintenance and security updates for a time.
- New Apple-silicon-dependent features will be unavailable.
- Third-party apps may increasingly require macOS 27 or Apple silicon.
On an Apple-silicon Mac, macOS 27 remains available. Intel-only applications can still run through Rosetta 2 during macOS 27, according to Apple’s Rosetta documentation. Rosetta 2 is a translation technology for Apple-silicon Macs running Intel applications; it is not related to Intel Mac hardware support. Apple says Rosetta remains available through macOS 27 while warning that general-purpose support will be reduced or end in a future macOS release.
Will an Intel Mac stop working?
No. An unsupported Mac is not the same as an inoperable Mac.

After major macOS support ends, an Intel Mac can still run existing applications, open local files, play compatible games, connect to supported displays and peripherals, and perform offline tasks. The risks build gradually:
- New applications may require Apple silicon.
- Existing applications may stop receiving updates.
- Browsers may stop supporting the installed macOS.
- VPN, endpoint-security, and password-management tools may drop it.
- Printer drivers, plug-ins, and accessories may become unavailable.
- Online services may eventually require newer browsers or security libraries.
An older Mac is therefore not categorically unsafe on the day macOS 27 launches. Its security margin shrinks as patches, browsers, and essential applications fall behind.
Should you keep your Intel Mac?

| It still receives security updates and you maintain tested backups. | You need current Apple Intelligence, Continuity, gaming, developer, or other Apple-silicon features. |
Before deciding, check every application that matters—not just macOS itself. Confirm support for your browser, password manager, VPN, antivirus or endpoint-security product, printer software, cloud-sync client, plug-ins, and business tools.
What to do if you keep it
- Install the latest update offered under System Settings → General → Software Update. On older macOS versions, use System Preferences → Software Update.
- Record the installed macOS version and build.
- Check the Intel and macOS requirements for essential applications.
- Create and test a Time Machine backup.
- Turn on automatic security updates where available.
- Keep recovery materials: the last compatible macOS installer, application installers, license keys, and secure account-recovery information.
Apple recommends backing up before upgrading; a backup is equally important if you plan to remain on an aging operating system.

Buy a used or refurbished Apple-silicon Mac
This is often the least expensive route to a longer macOS runway. Prefer an M-series Mac over Intel, then check memory, SSD capacity, battery health, ports, external-display support, warranty, return coverage, and the exact model year. Memory and storage are generally not user-upgradable, so buy enough for the expected ownership period. An M1 Mac may be excellent for general work but should not be assumed to have the same remaining support runway as a newer M4 or M5 system.

Apple’s Certified Refurbished Mac inventory changes frequently. Independent sellers such as OWC, Back Market, and Amazon Renewed require careful checks of seller reputation, activation lock, battery condition, warranty, configuration, and return policy.

Buy a new Mac
New Apple-silicon Macs offer the longest likely software runway and official current support. Choose by workload: a MacBook Air or entry-level notebook for general work, a MacBook Pro for sustained professional workloads and additional ports or displays, a Mac mini if you already own a monitor and peripherals, and a Mac Studio or Mac Pro only when the workload justifies their higher cost and expandability. Check live configurations and prices at Apple’s Mac buying page rather than relying on old price claims.
Keep Intel for Boot Camp or specialized hardware
Boot Camp is a major migration issue. Intel Macs can install Windows natively in ways Apple-silicon Macs generally cannot replicate directly. If you depend on native Windows, legacy drivers, or specialized peripherals, evaluate a Windows PC, remote desktop, or a virtual machine before replacing the Mac.
Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and Windows 365 may replace some Boot Camp workflows, but they are not equivalent in performance, graphics support, USB-device compatibility, licensing, or corporate-policy compliance.
Use an unsupported patcher
Tools such as OpenCore Legacy Patcher are an advanced, unofficial option—not a normal long-term recommendation. Possible problems include broken graphics, Wi-Fi, audio, sleep, or Continuity features; failed upgrades; delayed security patches; and the need to repeat the process after major updates. Business-managed or security-sensitive Macs may be incompatible with this approach.
Do not apply a generic command sequence without verifying the exact Mac model and macOS version. Make a complete, tested backup and maintain a recovery plan first.
Before buying a used Intel Mac
- Confirm the exact model identifier, not just “2019” or “2020.”
- Verify its newest officially supported macOS release.
- Check whether your essential software still supports Intel.
- Inspect battery health, keyboard, display, ports, storage, and firmware.
- Confirm that Activation Lock is removed.
- Compare the price with used or refurbished Apple-silicon Macs.
- Buy only with a clear return policy and warranty.
Do not buy an Intel Mac expecting years of major macOS upgrades. Its remaining value is tied to its current performance, stable legacy software, ports, Boot Camp capability, and price—not to future macOS compatibility.
Bottom line
Apple is ending Intel Macs’ access to new major macOS releases, not switching them off. Tahoe 26 is the last Intel-compatible release, and only a small group of late Intel models can run it. Keep an Intel Mac if its software remains supported, it still receives security updates, and your risk tolerance fits the shrinking runway. Replace it sooner if it is a security-sensitive primary computer or your essential apps require newer macOS. For a new purchase, choose Apple silicon unless a specific Boot Camp, driver, or legacy-hardware requirement points elsewhere.
