No—Apple never released an iPhone 9. The company announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X on the same day in 2017. The iPhone X (with X as the Roman numeral for 10) marked a major redesign; the familiar Home-button line continued as the iPhone 8. The 2020 iPhone SE (2nd generation) was often rumored to be the “iPhone 9,” but Apple released it under the SE name.
How the iPhone number went from 8 to X
On September 12, 2017, Apple announced both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus went on sale September 22; the iPhone X followed on November 3.
The iPhone 8 line retained the familiar design and Home button. The iPhone X took a different direction, with a 5.8-inch OLED display, Face ID, and no physical Home button. Its X was the Roman numeral for 10, fitting the tenth-anniversary period of the original iPhone.

That timing and the contrast between the two designs are the clearest explanation for the skipped number. Apple’s announcements establish what it launched, but do not give a definitive one-sentence reason for not using “iPhone 9.” Claims that Apple skipped 9 because of superstition or a cultural taboo are speculation, not an explanation established by those announcements.

Was the iPhone SE 2 really the iPhone 9?
No. The second-generation iPhone SE, announced in April 2020, was the phone many rumors had called “iPhone 9.” It shared the iPhone 8’s general 4.7-inch, Home-button design, but its official name was iPhone SE (2nd generation), not iPhone 9.
It paired that familiar form with an A13 Bionic chip, newer camera processing, Touch ID, wireless charging, and an IP67 water- and dust-resistance rating under specified test conditions. It had LTE rather than 5G. Its original U.S. starting price was $399 in 2020; that historical launch price is not a current price.

The most accurate shorthand is that the iPhone SE 2 was the closest practical equivalent to the rumored iPhone 9—not an iPhone 9 released under another name.

Apple’s iPhone SE (2nd generation) technical specifications and its iPhone SE 3 announcement provide model-specific details. The SE 2 is more than an iPhone 8 with a new processor: it also benefits from newer camera processing and wireless hardware. The SE 3 adds 5G and a still-newer chip.

Which model should you look for?
- You want the lowest-cost Home-button iPhone: Compare used iPhone SE 2 and SE 3 listings. An iPhone 8 may cost less, but it is older hardware. Used prices depend on region, condition, storage, battery health, lock status, and seller terms.
- You want a Home button and better long-term prospects than an iPhone 8: The SE 3 is the newer of these models, with A15 and 5G. Check current software compatibility and local availability before buying.
- You want a compact-feeling phone: The SE’s 4.7-inch screen sits in a body with substantial bezels. A newer edge-to-edge iPhone can have a larger display without feeling proportionally as wide, but it will not have a Home button.
- You want Face ID and a modern edge-to-edge design: Look at newer Face ID iPhones rather than searching for an iPhone 9. Current models and prices vary by market; Apple’s iPhone page is the place to check the current lineup.
Before buying any older iPhone, check its exact model, battery condition, Activation Lock status, carrier lock, return policy, and seller warranty. Do not assume an old model still supports the latest iOS release: compatibility, security updates, repair eligibility, and app support are separate questions that change over time.

- On the device, open Settings → General → About and check Model Name.
- Check the model number as well. If needed, tap the model-number field to reveal the identifier used for identification.
- Compare the result with Apple’s official iPhone model-identification guide.
- Ask a seller using the “iPhone 9” label for the actual model name and number, IMEI or serial details, battery-health information, carrier status, and return terms.
A Home button and single rear camera may point to an iPhone 8 or an SE; a phone with Face ID and no Home button may be an iPhone X or a later model. Appearance alone is not conclusive. A marketplace title saying “iPhone 9” is a seller’s label, not proof that Apple made one. It could refer to an iPhone 8, an SE 2, a refurbished or counterfeit phone, or even an old concept image.

Apple’s official model list is the reliable way to identify the device. Apple announced the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in the same 2017 event, then called its 2020 Home-button phone the iPhone SE. No official iPhone 9 or iPhone 9 Plus appears in that product history.
