The standard 6.1-inch iPhone 15 combines an OLED Dynamic Island display, Apple’s A16 Bionic chip, a 48MP main camera, USB-C, MagSafe and IP68 water and dust resistance. Its key compromises are a 60Hz screen, USB 2 data speeds and no dedicated telephoto camera. In the United States, Apple’s main store no longer lists it as a current new model as of August 16, 2026, but Certified Refurbished units remain available.
This article covers the regular iPhone 15—not the larger iPhone 15 Plus or the Pro models.

Design, size and durability
The iPhone 15 uses an aluminium frame, colour-infused glass back and Ceramic Shield front glass. At 171 grams, it is considerably easier to hold than the Plus model and remains a practical one-handed phone. It is 147.6mm tall, 71.6mm wide and 7.80mm thick.

Its IP68 rating covers dust resistance and controlled laboratory water testing to a maximum depth of six metres for 30 minutes. That does not make the phone waterproof. Water resistance can decline with wear, liquid damage is not guaranteed, and you should not charge it while the USB-C connector is wet.
Display: excellent OLED, but only 60Hz
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel has 2556 × 1179 resolution at 460ppi, HDR, True Tone, P3 wide colour, Haptic Touch and a stated 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Brightness ratings are condition-specific: 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits for HDR highlights and 2,000 nits outdoors.
Dynamic Island replaces the older notch and integrates alerts and live activities. However, the display runs at 60Hz, has no ProMotion adaptive 120Hz refresh rate and does not offer an always-on mode. Those are important differences from Pro iPhones.
A16 Bionic performance and storage
The A16 Bionic contains two performance CPU cores, four efficiency cores, a five-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. It is capable of demanding games, 4K video editing, photography and everyday multitasking, although it was Apple’s previous-generation high-end chip rather than the newest processor at the iPhone 15’s launch.
Storage options are 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, with no microSD slot. Choose 128GB if you stream and use cloud storage, 256GB for a balanced long-term choice, or 512GB for extensive offline media, games and frequent high-resolution video.

Camera system
48MP Main camera
The ƒ/1.6, 26mm-equivalent Main camera has sensor-shift optical stabilisation, 100% Focus Pixels and supports 24MP and 48MP photographs. Apple’s Photonic Engine, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5, Night mode and next-generation portraits improve computational image processing.
12MP Ultra Wide
The ƒ/2.4 Ultra Wide camera has a 120-degree field of view, useful for landscapes, architecture and group shots.

The phone offers 2x optical-quality in, 2x optical-quality out and a 4x optical zoom range, plus up to 10x digital zoom for photos. There is no separate telephoto lens: the 2x view is cropped from the high-resolution Main sensor. A Pro model with a dedicated telephoto camera remains better for longer-distance subjects.
Front camera
The 12MP ƒ/1.9 TrueDepth camera includes autofocus with Focus Pixels, Portrait and Night modes, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5 and 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 60fps. TrueDepth also enables Face ID and Apple Pay authentication.

Video uses HEVC or H.264 and includes sensor-shift stabilisation, audio zoom and stereo recording. 4K, 60fps and Dolby Vision files consume substantially more storage, and the full HDR effect requires compatible displays and software. Action mode trades resolution for stronger stabilisation.

Battery and charging
Apple rates the iPhone 15 for up to 20 hours of video playback, 16 hours of streamed video and 80 hours of audio. Actual endurance depends on signal strength, brightness, gaming, camera use, background activity, temperature and battery health.
MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging reach 15W; standard Qi reaches 7.5W. With a 20W-or-higher adapter, Apple says charging can reach approximately 50% in around 30 minutes. The adapter and EarPods are not included.
USB-C, connectivity and SIM
USB-C replaces Lightning and supports charging and DisplayPort video output, including up to 4K HDR with a compatible cable or Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Adapter. The crucial qualification is speed: the standard iPhone 15 is limited to USB 2 data transfer up to 480Mb/s. USB-C does not automatically mean high-speed transfers; the iPhone 15 Pro has a faster USB 3-class implementation.
Wireless features include 5G sub-6GHz, mmWave on supported US models, Gigabit LTE, Wi‑Fi 6 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and second-generation Ultra Wideband. Cellular bands and mmWave support vary by model and country.
US iPhone 15 models are eSIM-only. Models sold in many other regions include a physical SIM tray, while China mainland and some markets have different dual-SIM configurations. Check the exact model and carrier before importing or travelling.

Safety and satellite features
Emergency SOS via satellite, Crash Detection, Roadside Assistance via satellite, Messages via satellite and Find My via satellite are supported where Apple makes those services available. Coverage, eligibility and service terms differ by country and network, so do not assume satellite features work everywhere.

Choose the standard model for lower weight, easier one-handed use and a smaller pocket footprint. Choose the Plus for its larger display and six-hour longer rated video playback, accepting the extra size and 30 grams.
Is the iPhone 15 worth buying in 2026?
Apple’s US store no longer presents the iPhone 15 as a current new model as of August 16, 2026. Apple Certified Refurbished inventory remains a legitimate option; one observed unlocked 128GB unit was $529, but prices and stock change.
Buy it refurbished when you specifically want the Dynamic Island, dual-camera flexibility, MagSafe, USB-C and light 6.1-inch design at a meaningful discount. Prefer a newer model if the price is close, you need the newest processor or platform features, 120Hz scrolling, faster wired file transfers or a dedicated telephoto camera.
An observed Certified Refurbished iPhone 16e cost $509 for 256GB and offers an A18 chip, Apple Intelligence support in Apple’s product description and up to 26 hours of video playback, but it omits the iPhone 15’s Ultra Wide camera and Dynamic Island. Compare current prices rather than assuming the older model is the better bargain.
