Apple Intelligence is Apple’s built-in generative-AI and machine-learning system—not a separate app or chatbot. It adds writing assistance, summaries, image creation, translation, Photos tools, visual intelligence, Shortcuts actions, and Siri improvements to supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac models.
As of August 16, 2026, the documented current generation is tied to iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1. Availability still depends on the exact hardware, operating system, language, storage, internet connection, and region. Apple’s larger “Siri AI” upgrade was announced for later 2026 and should be treated as upcoming or beta-dependent unless your installed release explicitly includes it.

Quick answer
- Compatible iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, plus supported iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models. The base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not supported.
- Compatible iPad: iPad mini with A17 Pro and iPads with M1 or later.
- Compatible Mac: Apple-silicon Macs, subject to Apple’s model-specific list; Intel Macs are excluded.
- Storage: Apple requires about 7 GB of device storage for its models.
- Cost: There is no separate Apple Intelligence purchase. Compatible hardware and software are required; ChatGPT and some iCloud+ benefits are optional.
- Setup: Update the device, open Apple Intelligence settings, enable it, then leave the device on Wi-Fi and power while models download.

Apple Intelligence is a platform layer spread across Apple operating systems. It uses Apple’s foundation models, on-device processing, and (for larger requests) Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. Instead of opening an Apple AI app, you encounter its features inside Mail, Messages, Notes, Photos, Safari, Phone, FaceTime, Shortcuts, notification views, and Siri.

That distinction matters. Apple Intelligence is not equivalent to asking a standalone chatbot a question. It is most useful when it can rewrite text in the document you are editing, summarize a thread you received, find a photograph, translate a conversation, or trigger an action in an Apple app.
What you can do now
Write and communicate more efficiently
- Writing Tools: proofread, rewrite, summarize, and change the tone of selected text in supported fields.
- Mail and Messages: Smart Reply, thread summaries, and prioritization where supported.
- Notifications: condensed summaries so long notification stacks can be scanned quickly.
- Voicemail and Notes: summaries of transcribed calls and notes.
- Genmoji: create custom emoji-like images from a description.
- Image Playground: generate stylized images in supported Apple apps.
- Live Translation: translation in Messages, Phone, and FaceTime, with AirPods support in compatible combinations.
Language and platform support differ by feature, so a supported system language does not guarantee that every item above is available.
Photos and image creation
- Clean Up: remove unwanted objects from a photo.
- Natural-language search: find images by describing people, places, objects, or scenes.
- Memory movies: generate a movie from a text description of the memory you want.
- Image Wand: turn a rough sketch or selected content into an image in Notes on supported iPhone and iPad releases.
Apple has also announced more advanced editing, including Extend and Spatial Reframing. Treat those as next-generation features unless your exact release documents them as available.

Siri: current improvements versus Siri AI
Today’s documented Siri improvements include more resilient request handling, product knowledge, a more natural voice, typing to Siri, and optional ChatGPT assistance. They do not turn current Siri into an unrestricted agent.
Apple’s announced next-generation Siri AI is broader: it is intended to understand personal context across messages, email, photos, and other data; perform more cross-app actions; understand what is on screen; and answer questions using current web information. Apple said this version would arrive as a beta later in 2026, initially for supported devices set to English. Do not describe those capabilities as finished or universally available before your installed software confirms them.
Visual intelligence
On supported iPhones, visual intelligence can summarize or interact with text seen by the camera, identify plants, animals, places, and other subjects, turn a poster into a calendar event, ask ChatGPT about the scene, and search Google or supported apps. Apple also describes screenshot- and onscreen-based visual intelligence for newer Mac and iPad software; check the release-specific support page because availability is not identical across platforms.

Shortcuts and automation
Intelligent actions let Shortcuts use Apple Intelligence models and natural-language descriptions to build automations. Through App Intents, developers can expose app content and actions to Apple Intelligence and Siri. This is why an app can become actionable from a system assistant rather than merely provide a separate chatbot.

Software, storage, language, and region checklist
- Minimum original rollout: iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, or macOS Sequoia 15.1.
- Current documented generation: iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, or macOS 26.1.
- Storage: keep at least 7 GB free for on-device models. Turning Apple Intelligence off removes those models.
- Languages: the device language and Siri language must match. Current documentation lists English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese for compatible systems; individual features may support fewer.
- Region: availability varies under local law and by feature. Most features are available to EU residents on supported devices, but Apple says the next-generation Siri AI will initially be unavailable on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the EU. Apple also says Apple Intelligence currently does not work for supported devices purchased in mainland China under specified account and regional conditions.
- Connectivity: many operations run locally, but larger cloud requests, some image features, and ChatGPT require internet access.
How to turn on Apple Intelligence
- Install the latest compatible operating-system update.
- Confirm that your exact model appears on Apple’s supported list.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. On Mac, open the corresponding Apple Intelligence & Siri section in System Settings; the label can vary slightly by release.
- Turn on Apple Intelligence.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and power while the on-device models download. Download time varies.
- Check that the device and Siri languages match and that roughly 7 GB is available.
- Test Writing Tools, Photos search, Genmoji, notification summaries, or Siri.
If the option is missing or features remain unavailable
- Recheck the exact model, not just the operating-system version.
- Free storage and restart the download on Wi-Fi and power.
- Update the operating system fully.
- Set Siri and the device to the same supported language, then wait for language resources to finish downloading.
- Check regional and feature-specific restrictions.
- Allow time for model installation; an enabled switch does not always mean the download is complete.
How iPhone, iPad, and Mac differ
iPhone
iPhone is the strongest fit for camera-based visual intelligence, calls, Messages, Live Translation, and always-available mobile use. Exact model differences are especially important for visual features and future Siri AI.

iPad
iPad provides the same core writing, summary, Photos, Genmoji, Image Playground, Siri, and Shortcuts features on qualifying chips, plus a larger canvas for Notes and documents. Image Wand and Apple Pencil workflows make it particularly useful for handwritten or visual work.
Mac
Mac is better for long documents, coding, multitasking, and desktop workflows. Apple Intelligence appears in Mail, Messages, Notes, Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, and supported writing fields. The decisive compatibility threshold is Apple silicon, not merely whether the Mac runs a recent macOS.

Apple says many requests are processed on the device, which can reduce server dependence and permit some offline functions. For requests that need larger models, Apple says Private Cloud Compute uses Apple-silicon servers, does not store the data, uses it only to fulfill the request, and is designed to permit verification of its privacy properties.

Those are Apple’s architectural and policy claims, not an independent guarantee. “On-device” also does not mean every feature is local; cloud-dependent requests need connectivity.
ChatGPT integration is optional
Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT are separate systems. Apple integrates ChatGPT into selected Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and visual-intelligence experiences when a request benefits from it. ChatGPT availability depends on where the service is offered. A ChatGPT account may add features such as more advanced model access or conversation history under OpenAI’s current plan rules, but a ChatGPT account is not required for Apple’s core Writing Tools, summaries, Photos, translation, or device features. Should you buy a new device?
Do not upgrade solely for proofreading, summaries, Genmoji, or basic Photos tools if your current device is already compatible. Apple Intelligence arrives through software updates on qualifying hardware.
An upgrade makes more sense if you own an unsupported iPhone, iPad, or Intel Mac; specifically need camera visual intelligence or future Siri capabilities; lack the storage for models; or are already replacing a device for performance, battery life, Apple Pencil work, or desktop productivity.
- Choose iPhone for camera intelligence, calls, translation, and mobile availability.
- Choose iPad for Notes, Apple Pencil, documents, and a larger workspace.
- Choose Mac for writing-heavy work, development, multitasking, and long-form workflows.
- Consider iCloud+ only if you also need storage or Apple’s stated increased access to certain server-dependent features; it is not required for the basic system.
- Consider ChatGPT for general conversational, cross-platform, or model-specific work—not as a prerequisite for Apple Intelligence.
Apple Intelligence is therefore best understood as an integrated toolkit whose value depends more on your device, apps, and workflow than on a single headline feature.
