For new OpenAI image-generation or editing work, use GPT Image 2 through the Images API: send creation requests to v1/images/generations and editing requests to v1/images/edits. It accepts text and image inputs and returns images, not video. OpenAI’s Sora 2 models and Videos API shut down on September 24, 2026; OpenAI has not named a one-to-one replacement. So an OpenAI integration can generate images today, but there is no current OpenAI video-generation API to substitute into a Sora workflow.
Choose the API by the output you need
“Image and video generation” describes two different jobs, and the current OpenAI options do not cover both. GPT Image 2 is the documented choice for creating or editing images. The former Sora 2 video service is no longer available. Decide which output your application requires before designing its request flow:
- New image from a prompt: use the Images API generation route,
v1/images/generations. - Edit an existing image: use the Images API edit route,
v1/images/edits; GPT Image 2 accepts image input as well as text. - Video: the former OpenAI Videos API is shut down. There is no one-to-one OpenAI replacement API established in the current documentation described here.
The model documentation also lists Responses API availability. That is a separate integration route to consider if your application is built around Responses; for direct image creation and editing, the Images API routes are the clearest documented starting point.
What GPT Image 2 supports—and what it does not
OpenAI describes GPT Image 2 as a state-of-the-art image-generation model for fast, high-quality generation and editing. Its documented modalities are text input and image input/output. It supports flexible image sizes and high-fidelity image inputs. Audio and video are not supported, so do not treat it as a video model or expect an image request to produce a clip.

The source material does not establish particular output formats, exact size values, latency targets, queue behavior, or a guaranteed response schema for every request. Check the current model and endpoint documentation for the precise parameters and response handling your implementation needs rather than building around assumed defaults.
Make a basic image-generation request
The following examples send a prompt to the generation route and save the API response as JSON for inspection. Set OPENAI_API_KEY to an API key before running them. They use the documented model name and route; confirm current request fields and response format in OpenAI’s live API documentation before using them in production. The examples deliberately retain the response as JSON rather than assuming a particular encoded-image field.

}),
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Image request failed: ${response.status} ${await response.text()}`);
}
await Bun.write("image-response.json", await response.text());
The Node example uses Bun’s Bun.write to save the JSON file; replace that line with your runtime’s file-writing API if you run it under another Node.js environment. Inspect the returned JSON and follow the live endpoint documentation to extract or decode its image result.
How to handle editing and application-side options
For an edit workflow, send the source image and the text describing the desired change to v1/images/edits. GPT Image 2 is documented to accept image inputs, but the precise multipart fields, supported input encodings, and edit parameters should be taken from the current endpoint reference rather than guessed. Keep the source asset and prompt associated in your own job record so you can reproduce or audit a result.
Plan your integration around options the documentation does establish, then verify their exact request names and accepted values in the live reference:
- Input: text prompts for generation; text plus image input for editing and image-guided workflows.
- Output sizing: flexible image sizes are supported, but choose exact dimensions from current API documentation.
- Moderation: the gpt-image-1 API announcement documents a
moderationparameter, withautoas the default andlowas another value. Confirm whether and how the current model endpoint exposes this setting before relying on it. - Provenance: OpenAI says generated images include C2PA metadata. Preserve that metadata if provenance information matters to your application.
Do not assume a model’s listed capabilities guarantee identical behavior across every endpoint or account tier. Validate prompt, input-image, size, moderation, and response handling with the exact endpoint you plan to ship.
Estimate cost and stay within rate limits
GPT Image 2 usage is billed according to OpenAI’s live pricing. The current model documentation directs developers to the live pricing page and calculator; check those before estimating a production budget because prices can change.

Older figures are sometimes repeated as though they applied to the current model. They do not: OpenAI’s April 23, 2025 announcement for gpt-image-1 listed $5 per 1 million text-input tokens, $10 per 1 million image-input tokens, and $40 per 1 million image-output tokens. It also gave approximate per-square-image prices of $0.02 at low quality, $0.07 at medium quality, and $0.19 at high quality. These are historical gpt-image-1 figures, not a current GPT Image 2 quote.

OpenAI’s current GPT Image 2 model documentation lists Tier 1 limits of 100,000 tokens per minute (TPM) and 5 images per minute (IPM). Higher usage tiers have higher TPM and IPM ceilings. Treat those limits as a capacity constraint when designing a request queue: a burst of image requests can exceed the per-minute image allowance even if token usage remains below its ceiling. The exact retry behavior, latency and queue guarantees are not established here, so consult current platform guidance and handle failed or delayed requests explicitly.
Practical cost and throughput checks
- Estimate against the live price calculator, not the 2025 gpt-image-1 example prices.
- Track generated-image volume separately from token usage, since the documented Tier 1 image-per-minute ceiling is distinct from its token-per-minute ceiling.
- Test the prompt and desired size at the intended settings before scaling request volume; avoid assuming a cost per image that the current pricing page does not show.
- Build a controlled queue and surface API errors to callers. The published limits do not by themselves establish a latency or successful-throughput guarantee.
Safety, provenance and API data
OpenAI says the gpt-image-1 API uses safety guardrails and supports the moderation setting described above. Its April 23, 2025 image-generation announcement also states: “By default, we never train on customer API data, and all image inputs and outputs remain subject to our API usage policies.” That is a statement about default training use, not an exemption from the API usage policies or a promise that every kind of data is retained for no period. Review the current policy and data-handling terms that apply to your account before sending sensitive inputs.
C2PA metadata can provide provenance information about a generated image. If you resize, re-encode, or otherwise transform returned images in your own pipeline, check whether your processing preserves that metadata rather than assuming it survives every operation.

The former Videos API accepted a text prompt and optional image reference and used sora-2 or sora-2-pro. Historically, it offered 4-, 8-, or 12-second clips at a limited set of portrait and landscape resolutions, with synced audio documented for Sora 2 Pro. Those are historical capabilities only: OpenAI says the Sora 2 models and Videos API were shut down on September 24, 2026 and are no longer available. The current reference marks create, retrieve, list, remix, character, download, and delete operations as deprecated.
The historical Sora 2 Pro page listed rates of $0.30 per second at 720×1280 or 1280×720, $0.50 per second at 1024×1792 or 1792×1024, and $0.70 per second at 1080×1920 or 1920×1080. These prices are useful only as historical context; they are not an available rate card for a new integration. Most importantly, OpenAI states there is no one-to-one replacement API. Do not launch a new system on the assumption that an old Sora endpoint, model name, or price remains usable.
If your product needs video now
The available evidence here does not establish an alternative video provider or a successor OpenAI API, so choosing one requires a separate evaluation. Compare candidates on video duration and resolution, audio, image-to-video input, asynchronous job handling, pricing, rate limits, data handling, and service lifecycle. The shutdown illustrates why lifecycle status belongs in the selection criteria, not just output quality.

The API returns an error instead of an image
Confirm that the request uses the image generation route for creation or the edit route for an existing image, and that the model and body fields match the current endpoint reference. The examples above save the response JSON; inspect it rather than treating every HTTP response as an image file.

Check both dimensions of the documented Tier 1 limit: 100,000 TPM and 5 IPM. Reduce concurrent requests or pace jobs through a queue, and verify your account’s current usage tier because higher tiers have different ceilings.

An old video integration no longer works
This is expected for Sora 2 and the Videos API after the September 24, 2026 shutdown. The former endpoints are not a viable foundation for a new integration, and the shutdown notice does not identify a direct replacement. Remove dependencies on the retired service rather than treating the failure as a temporary image API problem.
The result lacks expected provenance information
OpenAI documents C2PA metadata in generated images, but image processing can affect metadata. Check the original returned asset and each downstream transformation stage before concluding that the generation response omitted it.
Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not
ScreenshotNeo is not an image-generation model or a video API, so it cannot replace GPT Image 2 for creating original artwork or replace the retired Sora service for generating clips. If the actual task is to render an existing web page into a screenshot or PDF, ScreenshotNeo is the relevant alternative to try first: it is a website screenshot API, not a generative image service. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, with those steps individually switchable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents.
