If Windows 10 lost internet access after an antivirus change, the cause may be the suite’s firewall, web protection, VPN, proxy, or network filter—not its basic virus scanner. First find out whether the problem affects one app, one site, one PC, or every device. Then briefly test only the suspected feature, turn it back on, and make a narrow exception only if the blocked item is trustworthy.
Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a fix. Menu names vary by Windows build and security product, and a work- or school-managed PC may restrict changes.
First find out what is actually blocked
Before changing security settings, narrow down the failure:

- Only this Windows 10 PC is offline: A local firewall, web filter, VPN, proxy, network driver, or Windows networking problem is more plausible.
- Only one app fails: Check its firewall rule, executable path, proxy setting, and recent app updates.
- Only one website fails: Check the antivirus alert, browser extensions, DNS filtering, and whether the site works from another device or connection. A warning is not automatically a false positive.
- Only one browser fails: Try another browser before resetting Windows networking; suspect a browser extension, browser-specific proxy, or HTTPS inspection.
Also note whether the problem started just after installing or updating the security product, whether a VPN is active, and whether the antivirus reported a blocked site, quarantined file, or suspicious connection. If email or another app works while browsers fail, that difference is useful evidence.

Antivirus, firewall, and web protection are different things
Antivirus scanning examines files and processes. A firewall controls network connections, often by app, direction, network, or port. Web protection may block domains, phishing pages, or downloads; HTTPS inspection can also interfere with encrypted traffic or certificates. A suite’s VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or network driver can affect all traffic if it stops working.
Look in the installed product for settings called Firewall, Web protection, Web Shield, Online Threat Prevention, Safe Web, Network Protection, HTTPS scanning, Encrypted traffic scanning, VPN, or Browser Protection. Names and locations vary by vendor and version.
1. Identify which security product controls protection
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection and check the active provider or Manage providers, if that option appears.
- Open Firewall & network protection to see whether Windows Defender Firewall is active.
Windows Security can report a third-party provider, and the firewall may be managed separately from antivirus protection. Do not assume that closing the Windows Security window disables protection; it does not itself turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus or Windows Firewall. 2. Test the suspected feature briefly
- If the problem is browser- or site-specific, temporarily pause only web or browser protection, if your product allows it.
- Test the affected site or app once, then immediately turn the feature back on.
- If there is no change, repeat with only the product’s firewall component, then re-enable it immediately.
Do not browse normally with all protection off. If pausing one feature restores access, that shows the feature is involved; it does not prove a product defect or that the blocked site or file is safe. A legitimate protection alert may be doing its job. Bitdefender, for example, recommends a temporary firewall test followed by re-enabling the firewall and adding a targeted exception when appropriate (Bitdefender’s firewall troubleshooting guidance).

3. Allow a trusted app through the firewall
For a program that cannot connect, first make sure you are changing the firewall that actually controls traffic. If Windows Defender Firewall is active:
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection.
- Select Allow an app through firewall, then Change settings.
- Find the correct application and select Private and/or Public only for the networks where it needs access.
- Select OK. If the app is not listed, choose Allow another app, browse to its actual executable, and add it.
Use the real program executable, not its installer or an unrelated launcher. Some programs use multiple executables, and a rule for the wrong file path will not help. A third-party suite may also have a separate application-control list.
Choose the network profile carefully: a home network you trust may be Private, while a hotel or café network should generally remain Public. On a managed computer, an administrator’s policy may override your changes. Microsoft says allowing a specific app is generally safer than opening a port; an app that downloads updates usually needs outbound access, not a broad inbound opening. 4. Verify a website or file before allowing it
If web protection blocks a site, check the exact domain spelling, the alert’s detection name and reason, and whether the same site fails in another browser or on another device. Confirm the domain with the organization that owns it before adding a domain-specific exception. Avoid switching off web protection globally just to reach one page.
For a blocked app or download, get it from the developer’s official site and verify its digital signature where possible. Scan it with a reputable security tool before allowing it. Do not whitelist a file merely because the warning is inconvenient. Malwarebytes, for example, supports an Allow list for websites, files, and applications and cautions users to allow only items they trust (Malwarebytes Allow list guidance).
If only banking or other secure sites break when HTTPS inspection is active, update the security product and browser and contact the vendor. Leaving encrypted-traffic scanning disabled indefinitely removes a layer of inspection.
5. Check proxy and VPN settings
A failed VPN or web-filter module can leave Windows using a proxy that is no longer available. In Windows 10, open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Review Use a proxy server; turn it off only if you did not intentionally configure it. Temporarily disconnect or quit a personal VPN and test again. Do not remove a work or school proxy or VPN without asking the administrator. Microsoft includes proxy checks in its Windows connection troubleshooting guidance.

6. Reset Windows networking if access still fails
If the security product was updated or removed but the PC still cannot connect, reset the networking components. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart Windows afterward. The release command can briefly leave the PC without an IP address; renew requests a fresh address. Microsoft describes netsh winsock reset as resetting the Winsock catalog, including custom Layered Service Providers that can cause application networking problems (Microsoft command reference). This will not fix a disconnected router, ISP outage, failed adapter, or blocked service account. If you use a static IP, custom DNS, VPN, virtual machine, Hyper-V, Docker, or business network software, note those settings first; you may need to restore or reconfigure them afterward.

Windows 10’s broader reset is at Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset > Reset now. Review the warning, proceed, and restart when prompted. Network reset can remove and reinstall adapters; saved Wi-Fi details may need to be entered again, and VPN clients, virtual adapters, or custom settings may need repair. Try the targeted firewall, proxy, and command-line checks first.

8. Restore Windows Firewall defaults when its rules are suspect
Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Restore firewalls to default and confirm. This can remove custom rules used by games, servers, printers, remote-access tools, development environments, and business apps. Organization policies may be reapplied. 9. Repair conflicting or damaged security software
Two real-time security products, overlapping HTTPS inspection, VPN filter drivers, or remnants of an old suite can conflict. A product that appears disabled may still leave a firewall or network filter installed. Compatibility problems are product- and version-specific: Malwarebytes documents possible interactions involving its Windows networking components and other security software, but that is not evidence that every combination fails.
- Keep one primary real-time antivirus active.
- Update the suite and restart.
- If needed, repair or reinstall it using the vendor’s official installer.
- If uninstalling, use the vendor’s official removal utility where available, then restart.
- Confirm Windows Security reports an active provider afterward.
Do not download removal utilities from third-party download sites, and do not install another antivirus simply to fix a damaged network stack.

Test another device on the same network and, if possible, test this PC on a different connection. If other devices also fail, contact the ISP or check the router. If only this PC fails, check the network adapter and driver, then contact the antivirus vendor with the alert details and the result of your brief pause test. If you also see redirects, unknown browser extensions, fake security warnings, disabled security tools, or unexplained account activity, treat malware as a possibility: run an offline or boot-time scan, avoid backing up suspicious executables, and change important passwords from a known-clean device. Consider professional help or a clean Windows installation if compromise cannot be contained.
Windows 10 security support
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Ordinary installations no longer receive regular security fixes or technical support; antivirus does not replace operating-system updates. Microsoft’s ESU information has shown differing dates across its official pages, so check current eligibility, enrollment, and the applicable end date for your region rather than assuming a single period applies. If the PC is eligible, review Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and its end-of-support and ESU information as you plan a supported configuration. These are separate from troubleshooting the immediate connection failure.
