Guido Reichstadter was on the third day of a hunger strike outside Anthropic’s San Francisco headquarters on September 5, 2025. Associated with the StopAI movement, Reichstadter was protesting Anthropic’s pursuit of increasingly capable artificial intelligence and urging major AI companies to halt what he viewed as a dangerous race toward artificial general intelligence.
What happened outside Anthropic?
The protest was reported by Futurism on September 5, 2025. Reichstadter was staging a solo hunger strike outside Anthropic’s headquarters in San Francisco and described the action as opposition to the development of increasingly powerful AI systems.
Although Anthropic was the immediate target, Reichstadter’s demands also referred to other major AI companies. The protest therefore focused on the broader frontier-AI development race rather than alleging that Anthropic alone was responsible for every problem associated with advanced AI.
Reichstadter was described as an activist, organizer and father of two. Futurism also reported that he had previously taken part in a 28-hour sit-in atop Washington, D.C.’s Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge protesting the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

What did Reichstadter demand?
In a statement reproduced on LessWrong, Reichstadter called on Anthropic’s management, directors and employees to:
- Stop what he characterized as reckless AI development that was harming society.
- Help address or remediate harms he believed AI systems had already caused.
- End the race among AI companies to build increasingly powerful general-purpose systems.
- Publicly acknowledge what he considered the extreme risks of that race.
- Encourage people who share those concerns to speak publicly and treat the issue as an emergency.
These were Reichstadter’s demands and assessments, not independently established findings about Anthropic or the future of AI. His statement combined concerns about present-day social harms with predictions about possible catastrophic or existential risks from much more advanced systems.
What does AGI mean in this protest?
Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, generally refers to a hypothetical system able to perform a broad range of intellectual tasks at roughly human level or beyond. It is not simply another name for a current chatbot, image generator or workplace automation tool.

Artificial superintelligence is an even more speculative idea: a system that would substantially exceed human abilities across many domains. The definition, feasibility and timeline for AGI remain contested. The protest should not be read as evidence that Anthropic has created AGI or that such a system is certain to arrive soon.
Reichstadter’s objection was primarily aimed at the direction and speed of frontier-AI development. Calling the protest “anti-AI” without qualification can therefore be misleading: the documented target was the race toward powerful AGI or superintelligence, not necessarily every use of every AI system.
Why was Anthropic targeted?
Anthropic is one of the companies developing frontier AI models and has publicly emphasized AI safety. That made it a prominent symbol of the debate Reichstadter was trying to raise, while also making its headquarters a practical site for a protest.

Later commentary associated with the discussion suggested that Anthropic may have been selected partly because its leadership and employees engage publicly with AI-safety issues. That is an interpretation from later discussion, not an official explanation from Anthropic or a confirmed statement that the company was uniquely dangerous.

How serious were the risks cited?
The protest raised two different categories of concern:
- Current harms: Reichstadter argued that AI systems were already contributing to social damage. Coverage also connected the wider activism to concerns about labor displacement, low-quality AI-generated content and concentrated economic power.
- Long-term catastrophic risks: He warned that highly advanced AI could eventually pose an extreme threat to humanity. That is a forecast about a possible future, not a verified event.
Those claims sit within a wider disagreement. Some AI-safety researchers and activists argue that systems far more capable than today’s models could create risks that existing safeguards cannot control. Others dispute the likelihood, timing or severity of those scenarios. The hunger strike expressed one side of that unresolved debate; it did not settle it.

Was this part of a wider movement?
Reichstadter was associated with StopAI, an activist movement focused on stopping or restricting the development of advanced AI. Other organizations mentioned in coverage included StopGenAI and the AI Incident Database, but they are not interchangeable groups and should not be treated as one organization.
A separate hunger strike later took place outside Google DeepMind in London. Michaël Trazzi said he was acting in support of Reichstadter. PauseAI, however, stated that it had not organized the hunger strikes, as noted in its public clarification.

How long did the hunger strike last?
The initial report covered day three, but subsequent reporting indicated that the action continued:

Later reporting said Reichstadter sustained himself with water, vitamins and electrolytes. That description should not be interpreted as making prolonged fasting safe; extended hunger strikes can involve serious medical risks.
Did Anthropic respond?
The sources reviewed for this account do not document a substantive public response from Anthropic to the day-three protest. That does not establish that the company ignored Reichstadter, refused to engage with him or changed nothing internally. It means only that a verified response was not established in the available reporting.
Nor is there evidence in the cited material that the protest produced a policy change, caused Anthropic to pause model development or had a measurable effect on the company. Its documented significance is as a highly visible expression of opposition to the frontier-AI race, followed by related activism and continued media attention.
Why the protest mattered
Reichstadter’s hunger strike put a sharp moral argument in front of a company whose work sits at the center of the AI-safety debate: that building more capable systems is not merely a technical challenge, but a decision with potentially society-wide consequences.
Whether one accepts his forecasts or not, the event is best understood precisely. It was a documented 2025 protest by an activist opposed to the race toward powerful AGI and superintelligence—not proof that AGI was imminent, proof that Anthropic had violated a law or policy, or evidence that the protest itself changed the company’s course.
