Use ansible-lint as your primary Ansible-aware check, add a policy scanner such as Checkov for rules relevant to your environment, and validate separately with Ansible’s syntax check and carefully controlled testing. Each layer finds different problems; no scan proves a playbook is safe.
From the project root, a practical starting point is ansible-lint followed by ansible-playbook -i INVENTORY PLAYBOOK.yml --syntax-check. For Checkov’s Ansible framework, run checkov -d . --framework ansible.
What each kind of scan checks
“Scanning” can mean several different things. YAML parsing, Ansible loading, lint rules, security policies, secret handling, and execution tests are separate checks—not interchangeable assurances.
| Check | Useful for | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ansible-lint | Ansible-aware syntax/load checks, module usage, conventions, and selected safety concerns. | That all behavior is secure or correct in your target environment. |
| Policy scanner, such as Checkov or KICS | Finding violations covered by the scanner’s implemented Ansible policies or queries. | That unflagged code is safe; coverage depends on available rules and recognized structures. |
ansible-playbook --syntax-check |
Checking that Ansible can load a playbook without executing its tasks. | That tasks will work or behave safely on real hosts. |
| Check mode, optionally with diff | Simulating some proposed changes for supported modules and tasks. | A complete dry run or a guarantee that no changes can occur. |
| Integration tests | Observing behavior against representative systems and inventory in a controlled environment. | Correctness in every production context or against every platform variation. |
Secret detection also needs deliberate attention: lint rules may catch specific patterns, but encrypted values, runtime variables, and custom logging require separate review.

Prepare the project before scanning
Run checks against the project context, not just an isolated YAML file. Playbooks can depend on ansible.cfg, inventories, variables, roles, collections, and plugins. Ansible-lint recommends running from the project root so it can discover configuration and resolve dependencies correctly. See the Ansible-lint configuration guide and usage guide.
- Identify the repository root and the playbooks, roles, or collections that should be checked.
- Declare role and collection dependencies in the appropriate requirements files, then install them in the scan environment. Missing dependencies can cause load errors that look like defects in a task.
- Use a controlled
ansible.cfg, inventory, and environment in CI. - Pin Ansible, scanner, and dependency versions in CI to avoid unexpected rule or behavior changes.
Follow the current Ansible-lint installation instructions; the documentation describes installation through ansible-dev-tools and also documents pip and pipx paths. Installation support and tool requirements can change, so check the live guidance for your platform.
Run Ansible-lint first
From the repository root, scan the project:
ansible-lint
Or target particular content:
ansible-lint playbooks/site.yml roles/web
Ansible-lint checks playbooks, roles, and collections against Ansible-specific rules for common errors, practices, and maintainability. It is opinionated, and its configured rules determine what the run checks. Its overview, usage, and profiles documentation describe the available scope.

Choose a profile that matches the task
Profiles build on one another. The min profile focuses on whether content can be loaded, including parser and syntax checks; basic adds common coding and style issues; moderate adds readability and maintainability practices; and safety adds checks for selected security concerns and nondeterministic outcomes. The shared and production profiles add packaging and ecosystem requirements; production is aimed at Ansible Automation Platform validated or certified content, not a general security certification. Exact profile membership can change, so consult the live profile list.
Investigate safety-related findings
A finding is a rule violation or potential risk to assess in context, not automatically a confirmed vulnerability. For example:
risky-file-permissionsflags file creation where the resulting permissions may be unpredictable or too open. Review the module and specify an appropriate mode when needed. See the rule documentation.risky-shell-pipechecks shell pipelines forpipefail, which helps ensure a pipeline does not silently hide an earlier command’s failure. See the rule documentation.package-latestwarns about installing a package’s latest version, which can trigger an unplanned update or pull in additional packages. Choose a planned version or an intentional update strategy. See the rule documentation.ignore-errorsdiscourages blanket error suppression. Register task results and express which failures are acceptable. See the rule documentation.no-log-passwordtargets a specific password-logging risk in loops, but is opt-in; enable it in configuration if it fits your checks. See the rule documentation.argschecks module arguments but is also opt-in in current configuration examples. Complex Jinja expressions can cause false positives. See the rule documentation.

checkov -d . --framework ansible
Its Ansible example includes a policy that catches disabled certificate validation in a package task. That is evidence of a particular policy check—not comprehensive coverage of Ansible security concerns. Confirm that your installed Checkov version still supports the Ansible framework, inspect the enabled policies, and decide which findings should fail CI. See Checkov’s Ansible scanning example.
KICS also lists Ansible as a supported scan type. Its command reference describes paths, output formats, and defaults including a 5 MB maximum file size and resolver depth of 15; verify flags and behavior against your installed release before relying on them in a pipeline. Its query coverage and analysis model differ from Ansible-lint’s. See the KICS command reference.
Validate syntax and behavior without deploying blindly
Check syntax and loading
Use the intended inventory and playbook:
ansible-playbook -i INVENTORY PLAYBOOK.yml --syntax-check
This checks syntax without executing tasks. It can still fail if a role or collection is missing or content cannot otherwise be loaded. Ansible-lint also performs syntax checks as part of linting. See the ansible-playbook CLI reference and Ansible-lint syntax-check rule.

Treat check mode as a limited simulation
When suitable, try check and diff modes against a test inventory and limited hosts:
ansible-playbook -i TEST_INVENTORY PLAYBOOK.yml --check --diff --limit TEST_HOST
Check mode does not exercise every task as a normal run would. Modules without check-mode support may do nothing, and tasks that depend on registered results may take a different path. A task marked check_mode: false can still make changes during a check-mode run. Diff mode may print before-and-after file contents, including sensitive data; use diff: false on sensitive tasks or omit diff mode where output cannot be protected. Review Ansible’s check and diff mode guidance.

Review shell commands, secrets, and dependencies
Use shell only when shell behavior is needed
Prefer ansible.builtin.command when a command does not need shell features such as pipes or redirection. If a task uses ansible.builtin.shell, quote templated values with Ansible’s quote filter to reduce injection risk. See the command module and shell module documentation.
Protect decrypted values and scanner output
Ansible Vault protects data at rest. After decryption, play and plugin authors remain responsible for preventing disclosure. Use no_log: true on tasks whose output could reveal secrets, understanding that it also reduces diagnostic detail, and protect CI logs. Diff output can expose file contents even when the source value is stored in Vault. See the Ansible Vault guide.
Review dependency trust separately
A scanner’s inspection of a playbook does not establish that its external roles, collections, modules, or plugins are trustworthy. Review dependency sources, pin versions, and control where CI fetches them. Ansible’s secure development practices include dependency-management guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Triage findings and govern exceptions
- Read the finding in context. Locate its file and line, rule ID, and the task or expression involved. Determine whether it identifies a definite issue, a possible risk, or a false positive.
- Fix the underlying behavior where practical. For example, set an appropriate file mode, handle pipeline failures, or narrow error handling rather than suppressing a warning to make output clean.
- Validate the change with the right layer. Rerun lint and syntax checks; use a safe test when the concern depends on runtime behavior.
- Keep exceptions narrow and reviewable. Use the configuration mechanisms documented by Ansible-lint, explain why a specific finding is accepted, and set a review date. Avoid broad ignores that conceal new issues. The configuration guide distinguishes visible ignored findings from skipped rules.
Jinja complexity can limit module-argument analysis and create false positives. Ansible-lint may need Vault configuration to decrypt content, but interactive --ask-vault-pass is not supported. Do not expose secrets merely to make a scan pass.
Make the checks dependable in CI
- Pin scanner and dependency versions, and install declared roles and collections in a controlled job.
- Run checks on pull requests, with explicit policies for which findings block a merge.
- Protect logs and machine-readable reports as potentially sensitive artifacts.
- Isolate untrusted contributions. Ansible-lint reads local
ansible.cfg, and vault password settings can invoke an executable; its usage documentation warns that linting untrusted content can execute code. Do not provide production secrets to such jobs. See Ansible-lint usage guidance. - Revisit scanner policies and exceptions as tools and project risks change.
Static checks cannot fully determine behavior that depends on inventory and variables, custom modules and plugins, external dependencies, target-platform differences, or values hidden behind templating and indirect calls. A clean report means only that the enabled checks did not flag recognized patterns in the content and context they examined.
