ANSI/TIA-607-C was published in November 2015 as a revision of the standard for generic telecommunications bonding and grounding infrastructure in customer premises. It clarified terminology, gave rack bonding busbars more explicit attention, and added design illustrations intended to reduce confusion about how bonding components fit together. It is now a historical edition: TIA announced ANSI/TIA-607-E in May 2024, incorporating material from TIA-607-D-1 and updating references. For a new project, start with the edition required by the contract and applicable authorities—not C by default.
Edition status: based on TIA’s public announcement and standards-store listing available as of September 23, 2026.
What ANSI/TIA-607 covers
ANSI/TIA-607 addresses the generic telecommunications bonding and grounding infrastructure for customer premises and its interconnection with the building’s electrical and telecommunications systems. In practice, that means a coordinated arrangement of bonding conductors, busbars, racks or cabinets, telecommunications rooms, equipment, and connections to the building grounding and bonding system. It is not simply a specification for choosing a grounding wire or buying a bar.

Bonding establishes conductive connections between equipment and infrastructure so they share an appropriate electrical reference and fault or transient currents have an engineered path. The telecommunications infrastructure must be coordinated with the building’s overall electrical grounding and bonding system. Creating an isolated “computer ground” is not automatically a sound substitute. The responsible electrical engineer should resolve the design against the applicable electrical code, local amendments, project requirements, and jurisdiction.

Why the 2015 C revision mattered
TIA-607-C was more than a change of edition letter. Terminology and component identifiers had evolved, rack bonding needed clearer treatment, and designers needed guidance that was easier to interpret across different building layouts. One practical concern was that earlier multi-story illustrations could be read as showing a telecommunications bonding backbone daisy-chained from one busbar to another. C added or revised design material and illustrations to make the intended system relationships clearer, including an example for a large single-story building.
That last example matters well beyond office towers. Warehouses, hospitals, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, campuses, and data centers can have many telecommunications rooms or equipment areas on one level. No vertical riser does not mean no bonding architecture: room-level and rack-level connections still need to be coordinated with the building system.

What changed in ANSI/TIA-607-C
Terminology and identifiers
C-era terminology emphasized the role and hierarchy of the system components. Common abbreviations include:
- TBB — Telecommunications Bonding Backbone
- TBC — Telecommunications Bonding Conductor
- PBB — Primary Bonding Busbar
- SBB — Secondary Bonding Busbar
- RBB — Rack Bonding Busbar
- BBC — Backbone Bonding Conductor
A TIA labeling reference maps several earlier identifiers to C-era terms: BCT to TBC, RGB to RBB, GE to BBC, TGB to SBB, and TMGB to PBB. The mapping can help when reading legacy drawings, product literature, and specifications; it does not mean that a suitable existing installation became noncompliant simply because a newer label was adopted. See the TIA labeling standards reference.
| Legacy identifier | C-era identifier | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|
| BCT | TBC | Telecommunications bonding conductor |
| RGB | RBB | Rack bonding busbar |
| GE | BBC | Backbone bonding conductor |
| TGB | SBB | Secondary bonding busbar |
| TMGB | PBB | Primary bonding busbar |
Terminology on an old drawing may not match current naming. Translate it carefully, then verify the actual topology, conductor routes, connection points, and project edition. Renaming a symbol is not a design review.

More explicit attention to rack bonding busbars
The RBB is a local bonding point associated with equipment racks or cabinets. It is distinct from the building-level primary bonding busbar and room-level secondary busbars; the conductors linking these points have their own roles. C added material addressing rack bonding busbars and expanded or clarified treatment of components and design.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An RBB should not be treated as an interchangeable accessory chosen in isolation. Its suitability depends on the rack or cabinet, bonding conductors and connectors, mounting arrangement, the number and type of connections, and the project’s adopted requirements. Product catalogs can help identify available bars and hardware, but they do not replace the engineered system design.
Clearer illustrations and design interpretation
A bonding diagram communicates topology, not just component names. A conceptual system may include a primary bonding point, a backbone serving telecommunications areas, secondary busbars in rooms, and local rack-to-busbar bonds. The exact configuration depends on the building and the standard’s requirements. The key lesson from the C-era clarification is not to interpret a drawing as permission to improvise a chain of busbars: use the standard’s system-level requirements and the project design to establish the connections.

Do not copy a published standard figure without authorization. In project documents, use an original schematic or properly licensed figure and label the actual connection paths clearly. A drawing that leaves the backbone, room bars, rack bonds, and building-system interconnection ambiguous invites installation errors.
How the editions progressed
| Edition or document | Date | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| ANSI/TIA-607-C | November 2015 | Clarified terminology, rack-bonding treatment, design material, and building-layout illustrations. |
| ANSI/TIA-607-C-1 | 2016/2017-era catalog listing | An addendum associated with C. The exact publication date should be checked in the authoritative catalog or document before relying on it. |
| ANSI/TIA-607-D | 2019 | The subsequent major edition. |
| ANSI/TIA-607-D-1 | July 2021 | An addendum intended to harmonize relevant material with ANSI/TIA-222, including tower and antenna topics where applicable. |
| ANSI/TIA-607-E | May 17, 2024 | The latest edition identified in TIA’s public materials; it incorporated D-1 content and updated references. |
TIA’s public D-1 announcement describes the harmonization project. TIA’s E announcement identifies incorporation of D-1 and reference updates as reasons for the E revision. The public announcement is not a complete clause-by-clause change log; a definitive technical comparison requires the standards themselves or an authorized change summary.
The TIA/Accuris standards-store listing identifies E as the most recent edition. TIA’s standards are available through its standards purchasing page.

Which edition should a project specify?
For a new design, use ANSI/TIA-607-E as the starting point when the project calls for the current TIA-607 edition. But the contract, owner’s standards, adopted codes, and authority having jurisdiction determine what is actually required. A project may intentionally freeze an earlier edition; a renovation may be governed by legacy documentation. Resolve that explicitly rather than silently substituting a different edition.
- Name the exact edition. Avoid a bare reference to “TIA-607”; state the required letter and any applicable addenda.
- Identify the project context. New construction, renovation, and retrofit can have different constraints and obligations.
- Coordinate the system. Align telecommunications design with electrical engineering, local code, related TIA or BICSI guidance, owner requirements, and relevant data-center or tower standards.
- Document the topology. Show busbar locations, conductor paths, rack/cabinet bonds, connection hardware, and the interconnection to the building grounding and bonding system.
- Specify components by requirements, not just labels. Define material, conductor and lug compatibility, mounting, connection capacity, and applicable listings or approvals as required by the project.
- Plan for maintenance and growth. Reserve usable connection capacity where justified by project needs. Do not assume a particular growth allowance is a universal TIA requirement.
- Require closeout records. Keep as-built drawings, product data, installation instructions, inspection records, and any specified verification results together.
Older editions may still appear in existing facility documents, contracts, training, and manufacturer literature. A product description that mentions C or D is not proof that an entire installed system meets E. Nor does publication of a new edition by itself prove that every existing facility must be retrofitted. Retrofit decisions call for engineering assessment, code and contract review, and evaluation of the installation as it exists.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing bonding with a single grounding lead. A sound telecommunications infrastructure is an integrated, coordinated system; one wire or bar cannot establish compliance on its own.
- Assuming an isolated “clean ground” is the answer. Telecommunications bonding must be coordinated with the building system, with the responsible electrical engineer resolving code and design requirements.
- Reading a schematic as permission to daisy-chain busbars. Confirm the actual backbone and room connection topology in the adopted standard and project design.
- Updating names but not connections. Replacing TMGB with PBB on a drawing does not establish that conductor sizes, routes, lugs, or attachment points are appropriate.
- Selecting by bar length alone. Check material, corrosion environment, hole pattern, lug fit, mounting hardware, connection positions, conductor sizes, installation instructions, and project approvals.
- Copying dimensions from another project. A published institutional specification may set particular bar dimensions or a growth allowance for that job; those values are not automatically universal TIA-607 requirements.
- Leaving the edition ambiguous. A generic reference can create a dispute about which requirements govern; state the edition and resolve any intentional legacy exception.
- Treating a product claim as system certification. A component may be marketed for use with a named edition, but system compliance depends on the complete design, installation, and project criteria.
Choosing physical components
Typical procurement items include copper or tinned-copper busbars, rack bonding bars or kits, bonding conductors, lugs, splice kits, mounting brackets, insulators, and labels. Compare connection pattern and capacity, dimensions, corrosion suitability, included hardware, applicable product listings, availability, and compatibility with the drawings. Product dimensions and performance claims belong to the individual product; they do not define the whole standard’s requirements.

Examples of manufacturer product information are available from nVent ERICO, Panduit, and Harger. These are product sources, not independent confirmation that a particular project design complies with an edition. Pricing and availability may be quote- or distributor-based and vary by market.
For complicated facilities, the work may also involve telecommunications grounding and bonding design, electrical engineering review, BIM/CAD coordination, installation, inspection, continuity or bonding verification where specified, and as-built documentation. Define acceptance and documentation requirements in the project specification rather than assuming a product purchase provides those services.
Bottom line
ANSI/TIA-607-C was a meaningful 2015 revision: it improved terminology and design interpretation, gave rack bonding busbars more explicit treatment, and added illustrations useful beyond multistory buildings. Its value today is historical and practical context, not current-edition status. TIA-607-E, released in May 2024, is the latest edition identified in TIA’s public materials as of September 2026. Specify the edition the project actually requires, coordinate the design with electrical and jurisdictional requirements, and do not infer that a new edition automatically mandates a retrofit.
