The Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) is an industry standards and collaboration organization, not a new consumer product. The Joint Development Foundation announced its formation on August 1, 2023, with Pixar, Adobe, Apple, Autodesk and NVIDIA as the founding members named at launch. Its purpose is to coordinate development and standardization of Pixar’s Universal Scene Description (USD) so 3D data can move more reliably between tools, platforms and industries.
What is the Alliance for OpenUSD?
AOUSD is an open, non-profit organization operating within the Joint Development Foundation. It provides a formal setting for companies and contributors to work on OpenUSD’s specifications, implementation, evolution and wider adoption. Its structure includes working groups, interest groups, membership programs and governance processes.
The August 2023 announcement therefore described an industry coordination effort. It did not announce a new app, device, subscription or standalone consumer service.

These companies were named as the founding members in the 2023 formation announcement. They should not be confused with AOUSD’s complete or current membership, which has expanded since launch.
What is OpenUSD?
OpenUSD means Universal Scene Description, Pixar’s technology for describing and organizing 3D scenes and their relationships. A scene can include assets, geometry, materials, animation, lighting, composition and other data needed by production or simulation workflows.
In the AOUSD context, the important issue is not merely storing a scene. It is enabling different applications and organizations to interpret, compose and exchange complex scene data through common specifications. NVIDIA’s 2023 account presented its Omniverse platform as OpenUSD-native and showed OpenUSD connecting tools and applications. That is an example of an ecosystem implementation, not a guarantee that every application or asset will interoperate without version, feature or implementation limits.

Why was AOUSD formed?
Large 3D projects commonly cross software packages, departments, vendors and industries. When each tool represents scenes differently, teams can face conversion work, duplicated assets, lost metadata and fragile handoffs. Those problems become more significant in projects involving simulation, robotics, visual effects, design, manufacturing or geospatial data.

AOUSD’s stated goal is to address that fragmentation by coordinating technical development and standardization around OpenUSD. The alliance aims to give developers and content creators a common basis for describing, composing, simulating and exchanging large-scale 3D projects.
This is an intended benefit of the alliance, not a measured result established by the 2023 announcement. A shared specification can improve the conditions for interoperability, but real-world compatibility still depends on how individual tools implement the specification and on which features a workflow uses.

How AOUSD’s work is organized
Specifications and technical development
The alliance works on formal specifications and on the ongoing development of OpenUSD. Standardization can define common behavior and terminology, while implementation work turns those definitions into usable software and production workflows.
Open collaboration and governance
AOUSD’s organization provides an open forum for participating companies and contributors. Working groups and interest groups allow technical subjects and community priorities to be handled within a common governance framework rather than through isolated, incompatible extensions.
Connections with the graphics community
On March 11, 2024, the Academy Software Foundation recorded a liaison relationship with AOUSD for cross-collaboration on OpenUSD development and interoperability. The relationship connects AOUSD’s standards effort with a broader open-source graphics community.

What has changed since the 2023 launch?
AOUSD’s July 21, 2026 update reported both membership growth and new specification milestones:
- ByteDance, Huawei, Physicl and Unity were named as new general members.
- AOUSD said it had begun the ISO certification process for Core Specification 1.1.
- The organization described a GitHub repository where developers can follow the specification and propose changes.
- It highlighted reported examples involving geospatial data, CAD preparation for robotics simulation and experimental agent-guided USD workflows.
“The rapid expansion of the Alliance for OpenUSD ecosystem demonstrates the growing industry demand for an open, interoperable 3D data standard,” said Guy Martin, NVIDIA’s Director of Open Source & Standards and Vice Chair of the AOUSD Steering Committee, in that July 2026 announcement.
The ISO point requires careful wording: AOUSD said the certification process had begun. That update does not establish that Core Specification 1.1 had completed ISO certification.

What AOUSD means for 3D users
For artists, engineers, developers and technical directors, AOUSD is best understood as infrastructure work. It seeks to make the data exchanged among 3D applications more predictable, reducing the need for one-off translators and proprietary handoffs over time.
It does not mean that joining AOUSD automatically makes a product compatible with every OpenUSD workflow. Users still need to check an application’s supported specification version, features, import and export behavior, and any restrictions imposed by the particular pipeline.
AOUSD in context
The 2023 announcement established an alliance around an existing 3D scene-description technology; it did not introduce OpenUSD as a consumer launch. The subsequent organization, membership additions, liaison work and specification milestones show an effort to turn that technology into a coordinated, industry-wide standards program.
As of July 2026, the most concrete status update is that AOUSD reported beginning ISO certification for Core Specification 1.1. The process is underway, and certification should not be described as complete.
