Android phones share core features, but the menus and available tools vary by brand, model, Android version, carrier, and region. The steps below use current Google guidance where possible; if a menu is missing, search for its name in Settings or check your phone maker’s support site. Android 16 features are not available on every phone, and announcements do not guarantee a rollout to a particular device.
Identify your phone and Android version
Before following a guide, check which phone you have and which Android version it runs. Pixel uses Google’s interface; Samsung Galaxy phones use One UI; other brands—including Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor—may organize the same controls differently.
- Open Settings → About phone and look for the model and Android version. Menu labels may vary.
- Check for updates under Settings → System → Software update, or search Settings for “software update.” Install updates offered for your device.
- If a path in this guide does not match, search Settings for the setting name. Google notes that settings can be combined on newer devices or remain separate on others; its Security & Privacy guide also points readers to the manufacturer when a control is unavailable.
Google’s consumer pages document Android 16 features, while some current support pages refer to Android 17-specific functions. Neither indicates that every device has received that version. Check your phone’s update screen rather than assuming a feature announcement applies to your model. See Google’s Android 16 overview and December 2025 Android 16 updates.

Transfer from your old phone
There are three common approaches: connect the phones with a cable during initial setup, restore a Google Account backup, or use a manufacturer’s migration tool, such as Samsung’s transfer utility. A cable can be quicker for a large transfer, but requires both phones and a compatible cable; cloud restore is convenient if the old phone is unavailable, but depends on backup contents, account storage, and app support. Using both where possible gives you a chance to catch missing items.
Google backup may include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, SMS/MMS, and data from some Google apps. It is not a complete phone image: some apps do not back up or restore all their data, and a restore can be incomplete when moving from a newer Android version to an older one. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours. Details are in Google’s Android backup and restore guide.
- On the phone you are backing up, open Settings → Google → All services → Backup. The manufacturer may place this elsewhere.
- Turn on backup. To start one immediately, tap Back up now.
- Check that contacts are saved to the Google Account you plan to use, not only to the SIM or old device.
- For WhatsApp and other apps with their own backup systems, follow each app’s transfer instructions. Check authenticator apps, banking apps, downloads, recordings, and eSIMs separately; they may need individual setup.
- On the new phone, verify photos, messages, contacts, files, and sign-ins before resetting or trading in the old one.
If Google Photos matters to you, open it and confirm backup is complete before deleting local photos. Cloud backup uses account storage and sends your media to the cloud; local-only storage avoids that upload but leaves files exposed to device loss or failure.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First-day checklist
- Set a PIN, password, or strong pattern and choose an automatic screen-lock timeout.
- Install available Android and app updates.
- Turn on device backup and verify photo backup if you use Google Photos.
- Review lock-screen notification previews, app permissions, and Find Hub settings.
- Set up contacts, messaging, email, and payment apps you actually use.
- Uninstall unwanted apps where the option is available; some preinstalled system apps can only be disabled or hidden.
Learn navigation, Quick Settings, and the home screen
Choose gestures or navigation buttons
Gesture navigation saves screen space. The common gestures are:
- Swipe up from the bottom: go Home.
- Swipe up and hold: open Recent apps.
- Swipe inward from either screen edge: go Back. This can conflict with an app’s side menu.
- Swipe down from the top: see notifications and Quick Settings. Swipe down again to expand Quick Settings.
- Swipe horizontally along the bottom gesture bar: switch between recent apps, where supported.
The exact gesture area and indicator vary. Google’s examples are in its navigation guide and Pixel welcome guide.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
If you prefer visible controls, choose three-button navigation: Back, Home, and Recent apps. On many phones, look under Settings → System → Gestures → Navigation mode; on Samsung, try Settings → Display → Navigation bar. If neither path appears, search Settings for “navigation.” Buttons are easier to discover but occupy screen space; gestures can take practice and may be harder for some users with motor or vision limitations.
Use Quick Settings and volume controls
Pull down from the top of the screen to reach common controls such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, flashlight, screen recording, hotspot, airplane mode, location, and Battery Saver. The available tiles depend on the phone and software; edit the tile layout if you want frequently used controls closer to hand.
Recommended Free Tools
Press a volume button and open the full volume panel to adjust media, calls, ring, notifications, and alarms separately. Turning down media does not necessarily lower ringtone or alarm volume. From the panel or Quick Settings, you may also be able to change audio output to Bluetooth headphones or another connected device.
Arrange the home screen
- To add an app shortcut, open the app drawer, press and hold the app, then drag it to the home screen.
- Move an icon by pressing and holding it, then dragging it. Drag one app onto another to make a folder.
- To remove a shortcut, press and hold and choose Remove. That usually removes only the home-screen icon, not the app.
- To add a widget, press and hold an empty area, choose Widgets, then drag a widget onto the screen.
- Look for Wallpaper & style or the manufacturer’s equivalent to change wallpaper and appearance. Use additional home-screen pages rather than filling one page with apps you rarely open.
Do not confuse Remove, Disable, Uninstall, Clear storage, and Force stop. Remove affects a shortcut. Disable turns off an app without necessarily removing its files. Uninstall removes an app when permitted. Clear storage can erase local app data or sign you out. Force stop closes an app temporarily; it is not a routine battery-saving step.
Make the display and controls easier to use
In Settings, search for Display size, Font size, Brightness, or Dark theme. Raising text or display size can improve readability, though it reduces how much fits on screen. Adaptive brightness can adjust the screen to surroundings; you can still change brightness manually.

Dark theme may reduce power use on some OLED displays, but the result depends on display technology, brightness, and app behavior. Google describes dark theme and other Android features at Android features and apps. For accessibility, look for magnification, color and contrast controls, TalkBack, Live Caption, hearing-device support, and interaction settings. One-handed mode may help on a large phone, but availability and its location vary by maker.
Control notifications without missing important alerts
Instead of silencing everything, adjust the apps and alert types that interrupt you. Open Settings → Notifications → App notifications, or swipe a notification slightly sideways and tap its settings icon. You can often turn off noisy categories while keeping calls, account security alerts, two-factor codes, medication reminders, or other important notifications.
- Use Do Not Disturb for sleep, meetings, driving, or focused work; review which people and apps are allowed through.
- Hide sensitive notification content on the lock screen if you do not want message details visible to others.
- Turn on notification history if your phone offers it, so you can review alerts dismissed by mistake.
- Use notification bubbles only for conversations where floating alerts are useful.
Google’s Android 16 materials describe notification grouping and live updates, but availability depends on the device, app, region, and manufacturer. See the Android 16 announcement and the December 2025 update.
Protect your phone, account, and personal data
Android security has several layers: the screen lock protects local access, Google Account security protects cloud services and recovery, app permissions control access to data, Play Protect checks for potentially harmful apps, and software updates address vulnerabilities.
- Use a strong PIN, password, or pattern. Fingerprint or face unlock can make access more convenient, but retain a secure backup method.
- Turn on automatic screen locking and review what appears on the lock screen.
- Enable Google Account two-step verification and keep its recovery email and phone number current.
- Install Android security updates when offered. Check Settings → Security and privacy on Android 13 and later; Android 12 and older may show separate Security and Privacy pages.
- Review camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, and nearby-device permissions. Keep access that serves a purpose and remove access that does not.
- Leave Google Play Protect enabled and check its warnings. It reduces risk but does not guarantee every app is safe.
- Review theft-protection options supported by your phone and region.
Google’s Security & Privacy guide describes the combined page, Play Protect, update status, Find Hub, and permission information. Disabling location, Bluetooth scanning, or background access may affect navigation, Find Hub, wearables, emergency features, or automated routines; choose based on how you use the phone.

Install apps carefully
Open Google Play, check that the developer and listing match the app you intend to install, and review permissions, reviews, and update history. Play Store checks whether apps are compatible with a device and Android version, but compatibility does not prove an app is trustworthy or privacy-friendly.
Installing an APK from outside Google Play can be legitimate, but it increases risk. Use only a source you trust, avoid pirated or modified apps and unsolicited APK links, and revoke the app’s Install unknown apps permission when finished. Do not install an APK because a pop-up claims it is needed to repair your phone.
Set up Find Hub before your phone goes missing
Google says adding a Google Account automatically turns Find Hub on, but verify that the phone is linked and visible. Remote securing or erasing requires the device to have power and network access, be associated with the correct Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play. See Google’s Find Hub help.
- From another device, open the Find Hub app or visit android.com/find.
- Sign in to the Google Account associated with the missing phone and select the device.
- Check its current or last known location. If it may be nearby, choose Play sound; Google says the phone rings at full volume for five minutes, even if set to silent or vibrate, when it can be reached.
- Choose Mark as lost to lock the phone and display contact information.
- Use remote erase only when recovery is unlikely. It permanently deletes device data, and its location will no longer be available in Find Hub afterward. Google warns remote erase may not delete data on an SD card.
Find Hub cannot overcome a dead battery, lack of connection, an unlinked account, or a device that has already been erased. Indoor location can also be stale or inaccurate. Check that you selected the right Google Account before concluding that the phone is missing from the service.
Improve battery life and free storage
Find the cause of battery drain first
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage (or search Settings for “battery usage”) to see which apps or components are consuming power. Lower brightness, shorten screen timeout, switch off an always-on display you do not need, and use Battery Saver during travel or emergencies. Keep Android and apps updated.

Restrict background activity only for an app that is demonstrably using too much power. Aggressive restrictions can delay messages, email, navigation, wearable synchronization, smart-home alerts, and backups. Android usually manages background processes; repeatedly force-stopping every app is not a reliable battery fix. Turning off 5G or location is not a universal solution because the effect depends on signal, hardware, and use.
Clear storage safely
Check Settings → Storage to see what occupies space. Remove apps you no longer use and review downloaded videos, podcasts, maps, documents, and large files. Empty an app’s trash only after checking that nothing there is needed. Before deleting photos, confirm Google Photos backup has completed.
Storage is space for apps and files; memory (RAM) is working space for active tasks; cloud storage is account space. Google Accounts include up to 15 GB shared across Google services, and Google One plans offer more. Available plans and prices vary by region; check Google One’s plans page for the account and location you use.

Clearing an app’s cache can help with a particular troubleshooting issue, but clearing its storage may delete local data or sign you out. Do not delete messaging media, offline maps, or local recordings without checking what you still need. An SD card, where a phone supports one, is not a complete backup.

For current feature availability, consult Google’s Android site, its new features overview, and its Android 16 feature page. Features involving Gemini or other AI tools can depend on hardware, app, account, language, region, and network.
Troubleshoot common Android problems
| Problem | First checks |
|---|---|
| Phone is slow | Restart, check free storage and updates, review battery usage, and remove apps you do not trust or need. |
| Battery drains quickly | Check Battery usage, signal strength, brightness, screen timeout, and background activity of the app using the most power. |
| Notifications do not arrive | Check that app’s notification categories, Do Not Disturb, battery restrictions, and data connection. |
| An app crashes | Update it, force stop it once, restart the phone, and clear cache if available. Reinstall only after confirming its data is backed up; clearing storage can delete local data. |
| A setting is missing | Search Settings for the feature name, then check your manufacturer’s support information. Menu labels and locations vary. |
| Photos seem to have disappeared | Check the Google Photos account selected, Archive, Trash, and backup status before deleting or restoring anything. |
| Phone is lost | Use Find Hub and mark the device as lost before deciding whether to erase it. |
| New phone is missing data | Check the Google Account used, app-specific backup, Android-version compatibility, and whether a cable or manufacturer transfer is still needed. |
Know what destructive actions do
Remote erase permanently deletes phone data; clearing app storage can remove local app data; deleting photos can remove the only copy if backup has not completed. A factory reset also removes data from the phone, so verify transfers and backups first. Before any reset, check app-specific recovery needs and make sure you can sign back in to your Google Account.
