Google’s 2026 Android Auto update is designed to make the interface fit more car-screen sizes and shapes, but it is not confirmed to add a universal “Display size” slider. The main change is adaptive: Android Auto can choose a more suitable layout for ultrawide, portrait, circular and other unusual displays.
Google announced the redesign on May 12, 2026, with a rollout planned throughout 2026. Availability can depend on the phone, vehicle, trim level, infotainment firmware, screen configuration and Google’s staged rollout.
What Google announced
Google’s next-generation Android Auto redesign includes an interface built to use a wider variety of car displays. The company specifically highlighted ultrawide, portrait, circular and other unusual screen shapes.

These announcements describe a broader interface redesign, not one Android Auto version or one release date that activates every feature for every driver. Google says the changes will roll out throughout 2026. Google’s announcement does not confirm a universal manual display-size control.
“Display size” does not necessarily mean a resize slider
Android Auto already uses responsive and adaptive layouts. It receives information about the available projected area and selects an interface that fits defined screen-width and screen-height breakpoints. The physical diagonal measurement alone does not determine the result.

Google’s Android Auto layout documentation explains that margins and layouts adapt at defined breakpoints. As a result, two cars with similarly sized screens can display Android Auto differently if their aspect ratios, reported density, firmware or supported capabilities differ.

The redesign should be most useful on vehicles and receivers with:

- Requires Android 11+

- Portrait-oriented screens
- Circular or non-rectangular displays
- Large unused areas around the projected interface
- Widescreen panels that currently restrict Android Auto to part of the display
- Older systems that force an awkward split-screen or compatibility layout
- Aftermarket receivers that report unusual resolution or density information
Better adaptation does not guarantee that every vehicle will show Android Auto edge to edge. The head unit and vehicle firmware still control important parts of the integration. Compatibility can also vary by model year, trim, market and equipment package. Check Google’s official vehicle and stereo compatibility directory for model-specific information.
Will it make text and icons larger?
Not necessarily. Google has not documented a universal Android Auto setting that independently enlarges or shrinks all text, icons and map elements.
Android Auto is designed for glanceable use while driving. Google’s car-design guidance specifies minimum touch targets of 76×76 dp, larger than typical phone controls. That design requirement is about safe interaction; it is not a promise that users can manually scale the entire interface. See Google’s touch-target sizing guidance.
Changing the Android phone’s display size or accessibility settings may affect some projected elements or keyboard behavior, but it is not a verified universal Android Auto resizing method. Results can vary between phones, vehicles and apps.

How to get the redesigned Android Auto experience
- Install available updates for the Android phone.
- Update Android Auto and Google Maps through Google Play.
- Restart the phone after updating.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone to the vehicle.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s infotainment firmware updates.
- If supported, test both wired and wireless Android Auto.
- Inspect the vehicle’s display or projection settings for options such as Full screen, Split screen, Projection or Android Auto.
- Allow for a staged Google-side or vehicle-specific rollout.
Installing the newest Android Auto APK does not guarantee immediate access to the redesign. Google’s announcement gives a 2026 rollout window rather than a universal activation date. Google’s official Android Auto setup guidance also notes that vehicle-specific integration questions may need to go to the vehicle manufacturer.
If Android Auto still looks too small or does not fill the screen
- Confirm the connection. Make sure the car is running Android Auto rather than Bluetooth-only audio.
- Restart both systems. Restart the phone and infotainment system.
- For wired connections, try another suitable USB cable and another USB port.
- Check the car’s settings. Search for Android Auto, Projection, Full screen, Split screen or Screen size switching.
- Check for letterboxing. Unused borders may be caused by the head unit’s reported aspect ratio or an unsupported layout mode.
- Update the receiver. This is particularly important for aftermarket systems.
- Test another compatible Android phone. This can help separate a phone issue from a vehicle or receiver issue.
- Re-pair the phone if the projection session appears corrupted.
If only one app looks wrong, update or reinstall that app before changing system display settings. Do not experiment with resolution or density settings while driving.

Google’s Android Auto testing documentation lists 800×480, 1280×720 and 1920×1080 video resolutions for testing and configuration. On some devices, Android Auto developer options may expose resolution-related controls, but these are not guaranteed consumer settings for every phone or vehicle.

An unsuitable setting can cause cropping, oversized controls, letterboxing or a layout that is harder to read. A higher resolution also does not automatically mean larger or clearer controls, while changing logical density can trade content area for readability.

Use these controls only while parked and only when troubleshooting a known head-unit issue. They are not a substitute for a manufacturer firmware update. Google’s testing documentation describes the resolutions in the context of the Desktop Head Unit and Android Auto video configuration.
Android Auto is not Android Automotive OS
Android Auto projects a phone-based interface onto a compatible car display. Android Automotive OS runs directly inside the vehicle’s infotainment system.
Google’s 2026 announcement discusses both Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, but their features, update mechanisms, app availability and rollout schedules can differ. A feature appearing on a Google-built-in vehicle should not automatically be treated as a feature of phone-projected Android Auto.

What determines the final layout?
- The vehicle or receiver reports display dimensions, orientation, density and supported capabilities.
- Android Auto determines the available video area.
- The interface selects a layout using responsive margins and adaptive breakpoints.
- Compatible Android Auto apps fit their content into the permitted car templates.
- The vehicle’s firmware and projection implementation can still affect the final result.
This is why screen size printed in inches is not enough to predict the experience. A portrait display, a very wide panel and an aftermarket receiver may all require different layouts even when their resolutions appear similar.
What to expect from the update
Owners of unusual or poorly used car displays have the most reason to expect a visual improvement. Owners of conventional screens may see a refreshed interface, widgets or navigation changes rather than a dramatic increase in usable screen area.
There is no confirmed universal method to force full-screen Android Auto on every widescreen or portrait display, and no confirmed universal control for changing icon, text or map size independently of the vehicle’s display configuration. If the screen remains cropped or letterboxed after phone and app updates, the vehicle manufacturer or receiver maker is usually the right support contact.
