Android 17 is Google’s 2026 Android release, identified as API level 37. The stable version was released on June 16, 2026, with supported Pixel devices first in line. Other phones and tablets depend on their manufacturer, model, region and carrier, so Android 17 is not a simultaneous update for every Android device.
The release combines adaptive large-screen behavior, new privacy and theft protections, broader multitasking, foldable gaming support and developer changes that matter when an app targets API 37.
What is Android 17?
Android 17 is a major Android operating-system release and the platform’s API level 37. Google made the stable platform and its AOSP source available on June 16, 2026. Developers can inspect the platform, build against the Android 17 SDK and test apps on an Android 17 emulator or compatible hardware. Android 17 is not the Dragon Ball character
“Android 17” can also mean the Dragon Ball character. That fictional character is unrelated to Google’s operating system; see the official Dragon Ball explanation for that meaning.
Android 17 release date and rollout

Google announced the stable release and initial Pixel availability in its Android 17 release announcement. A phone showing a later quarterly platform release or a beta build may not have the same build as the original June stable release.
Why your phone may not show the update
- The manufacturer has not approved Android 17 for that model.
- Your carrier or region is on a later rollout schedule.
- The phone has reached the end of its promised software support.
- The rollout is staged and has not reached your device yet.
Google has not published one universal manufacturer-by-manufacturer compatibility list in the release announcement. Avoid treating an unofficial device list as confirmation of support.
What is new for users?
Google’s Android 17 feature overview describes the following changes. Availability can differ by device, launcher, hardware, region and separate app rollout.
Bubbles for broader multitasking
Long-pressing an app’s launcher icon can turn it into a compact floating window. On tablets and other large screens, bubbles can appear in a dedicated bar, then be resized or expanded. This is broader window multitasking, not simply the older messaging-focused Bubbles API. Exact behavior depends on the launcher and device form factor.
Screen Reactions
Screen Reactions records the display and the selfie-camera reaction at the same time, useful for demonstrations, commentary and reaction videos. Google said the feature would roll out first on Pixel devices during summer 2026; it should not be assumed to exist on every Android 17 device.

More selective privacy controls
- Temporary access to precise location.
- A system contact picker that can share selected contact fields, such as a phone number or email address, instead of the entire address book.
- More granular controls over app data access.
These controls reduce unnecessary exposure but do not prevent an app from processing data that a user legitimately grants.
Theft and scam defenses
Android 17 expands the Mark as lost flow in Find Hub, including biometric locking intended to stop someone with the passcode from easily accessing data or disabling tracking. Google also highlights Live Threat Detection improvements, expanded Advanced Protection, fewer PIN-guessing attempts and longer delays after failed attempts. These measures lower risk; they do not replace a strong lock method, account security, backups or carrier theft precautions.
Foldable gaming mode
On supported foldables, an optimized layout can place the game on one side of the display and a dynamic gamepad on the other, with native controller remapping. Google described this as arriving on foldables in the following months, so it is form-factor and rollout dependent.
Memory and performance changes
Google says Android 17 introduces app memory limits intended to stop individual apps consuming excessive RAM and to improve performance and battery life. Actual results vary with hardware, workload, thermal conditions, background services and manufacturer tuning; the release is not a guarantee of longer battery life on every phone.
Creator, camera and app features
Google separately announced creator capabilities in its Android 17 creator update, including Ultra HDR capture and playback, built-in stabilization, Night Sight integrations and improved Instagram capture and upload behavior on advanced devices. Instagram tablet optimization, AI enhancement and audio separation in Instagram’s Edits app, and a planned Adobe Premiere app for Android tablets belong to apps, collaborations or particular hardware—not automatically to the Android framework on every device.
AI integration through AppFunctions
AppFunctions lets an app expose defined capabilities that AI agents and assistants can discover and execute against the app’s local state. At launch, the related Jetpack library was alpha and Gemini integration was in private preview with trusted testers. It requires app developers to define functions and permissions; it is not unrestricted AI control of a phone and should not be treated as universally production-ready.

How to check for Android 17
- Open Settings.
- Open System, Software update or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
- Select Check for update.
- Install the update if it is offered and restart when prompted.
- Verify the version under About phone, About tablet or Android version.
Labels vary between Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola and other software skins. Do not sideload an unofficial build as a normal solution when an official rollout is unavailable.
What changes for Android developers?
Build and test API level 37
Install the Android 17 SDK and tools, create an Android 17 emulator or connect supported hardware, review behavior changes, test existing apps on Android 17, then raise targetSdk to 37 only after compatibility work. Google’s workflow is documented at developer.android.com/about/versions/17/.
Large-screen orientation and resizing
For apps targeting API 37, Android 17 removes the opt-out for orientation and resizability restrictions on large screens whose smallest width is greater than 600 dp (sw > 600dp). On those tablets, foldables and desktop-style environments, the system ignores legacy controls including:

Games are exempt from this specific restriction when categorized as games, and users retain some aspect-ratio controls. This does not mean every app is forced into landscape everywhere.
Test portrait and landscape assumptions, folded and unfolded states, free-form windows, desktop mode, dialogs, navigation, keyboards, media playback and configuration changes. Remove hard-coded dimensions and verify that layouts adapt without assuming an activity always restarts.
Activity recreation behavior
Android 17 changes default activity-recreation behavior for configuration changes including keyboard, keyboard-hidden, navigation, touchscreen, color-mode and some UI-mode changes. If an app depends on a full restart, review android:recreateOnConfigChanges and the related configuration constants described in the Android 17 beta documentation.

Cleartext traffic
For apps targeting Android 17 or higher, android:usesCleartextTraffic is deprecated. If an app relies on usesCleartextTraffic="true" without a corresponding Network Security Configuration, cleartext traffic defaults to disallowed. Migrate to a granular configuration rather than enabling unrestricted HTTP:

Practical test checklist
- Run normal flows on an Android 17 emulator and physical phone.
- Test tablets, foldables, external displays and desktop-style windows.
- Exercise camera, media, permissions, networking and keyboard flows.
- Check state restoration when configuration changes do not recreate the activity.
- Use staged or beta distribution, monitor crashes and repeat testing after changing
targetSdk.
For basic inspection of a connected device, ADB can report the SDK and release values:

Apps look wrong on tablets or foldables
Fixed widths, portrait-only assumptions and aspect-ratio locks may fail under the API 37 large-screen rules. Rework responsive layouts and test folded, unfolded and free-form states.

The app behaves differently after a keyboard or UI change
Do not assume activity recreation. Save and restore state explicitly, or adopt the Android 17 recreation configuration where a restart is genuinely required.

HTTP requests stop working
Audit cleartext dependencies and add narrowly scoped Network Security Configuration exceptions. Do not solve the failure by allowing all cleartext traffic.
A promised feature is missing
It may be Pixel-only, hardware-dependent, region-limited, delivered through a separate Google or manufacturer app, still in preview, or limited to tablets and foldables. Android 17’s presence alone is not proof that every announced feature is installed.
Should you install Android 17?
Users: Install it when the official update is offered and your data is backed up. The most visible gains are likely on Pixel devices, tablets, foldables and newer hardware, but buying a new phone solely for Android 17 is not automatically justified. Check the manufacturer’s support policy and the hardware features you actually need.

AOSP availability also does not equal the complete Google-certified Pixel experience: manufacturers may add, rename or omit features in their own software.
