Its USB Protection feature blocks new USB data connections while a supported phone is locked. Google says ordinary charging continues, but fast charging may not begin until you unlock the screen in some cases.
What USB Protection actually does
USB Protection is part of Android’s Advanced Protection security bundle, not a universal charging switch. Its purpose is to reduce the attack surface of a locked phone by stopping a newly connected USB device from opening a data or communication channel.
When the phone is locked, a new connection to a computer, flash drive, keyboard, mouse, debugging setup, charging station or similar accessory is blocked until you authenticate. Google describes this as blocking USB data; it does not disable the physical port or all power delivery.
Google also cautions that effectiveness can vary with a manufacturer’s USB implementation. Android 16 beta reports helped reveal the feature, but Google’s current support documentation is the authority for final behavior.

Does Android 16 block fast charging?
Not as an unconditional rule. Google’s current documentation says USB charging continues while the screen is locked, while fast charging may wait until the screen is unlocked. Fast-charging standards can require communication between the phone and charger to negotiate a higher-power mode. Blocking locked-device USB communication can therefore delay that negotiation on some hardware.
| Situation | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Locked phone with an ordinary USB charger | Charging generally continues. |
| Locked phone with a fast-charging charger | Fast charging may not start until you unlock the phone. |
| Phone unlocked before connecting | A new USB data connection and charging negotiation can proceed, subject to the device and charger. |
| Connection established while unlocked, then phone locked | The existing connection may remain active. |
| New computer or accessory connected while locked | USB data is blocked until the phone is unlocked. |
The exact protocol or hardware path affected is not specified by Google, so do not assume every USB Power Delivery or proprietary fast-charging implementation behaves identically.
What USB Protection blocks while the phone is locked
- New file-transfer connections to computers.
- USB debugging and other computer-mediated connections.
- New keyboards, mice, flash drives and similar peripherals.
- Some Android Auto or accessory connections that were not established while the phone was unlocked.
- Data-capable public charging accessories that attempt to communicate with the phone.
A connection that began while the phone was unlocked can remain active after the screen locks, including a laptop file-transfer session or USB Android Auto. Disconnecting it ends that session. USB Protection is designed mainly for a new connection made to a locked device, not for every connection under every state.
Supported phones and Android versions
Google introduced USB Protection as an Android 16 Advanced Protection capability. Its dedicated help page currently lists Pixel 6 and later as supported, and Google’s 2026 security information describes availability on Pixel devices running Android 16 or later. Other manufacturers may expose the feature later, use different menu labels or implement USB behavior differently; Android 16 alone does not guarantee identical support on every phone.

There are also small timing exceptions: USB data may take a few seconds to shut off after the phone locks, and USB remains unprotected until the boot process has finished.
How to enable USB Protection
USB Protection turns on automatically when Device protection is enabled on a supported phone. A screen lock is required.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & privacy.
- Under Other settings, tap Advanced Protection.
- Turn on Device protection.
- Follow the setup prompts and restart if Android requests it.
Labels can differ by language, manufacturer skin and software build. If Advanced Protection is missing, check the phone model, Android version and whether the manufacturer has enabled the feature for that build.
How to restore fast charging or USB data
Try the least disruptive fix first. Do not disable the entire security bundle just because the phone is charging more slowly.

- Unlock the phone before connecting the charger or USB accessory.
- If it is already connected, unlock the phone, unplug the cable and reconnect it.
- Use the manufacturer’s recommended charger and a known-good, properly rated USB-C cable.
- Check for a status such as “fast charging,” “rapid charging” or “super fast charging.”
- Connect directly to a wall charger rather than a laptop, monitor, hub, dock or questionable public station.
- Restart the phone and test again.
- If necessary, temporarily disable Device protection at Settings → Security & privacy → Advanced Protection → Turn off Device protection. Authenticate and restart if prompted.
Turning off Advanced Protection restores the protections and restrictions to their prior state, but it also removes more than USB Protection. If charging remains slow after these checks, the cause may be the cable, charger protocol, heat, battery level, adaptive charging or a manufacturer-specific implementation rather than Android 16’s security feature.
Other Advanced Protection trade-offs
Advanced Protection is a bundle intended for people who want stronger resistance to targeted attacks and harmful downloads. Depending on the device and account configuration, it can also:
- Block app installations from unknown sources.
- Restrict accessibility services to verified accessibility tools.
- Enable inactivity reboot and other theft-related protections.
- Require deliberate unlocking before new USB accessories can work.
It is a stronger fit for journalists, activists, public officials, administrators, executives and others facing elevated physical-access or targeted-attack risk. It may be inconvenient for people who routinely connect a locked phone to cars, computers, docks, monitors, keyboards or USB storage.

“It says charging, but it is slow”
Unlock and reconnect first. Then eliminate the cable, charger, hub and temperature as variables. USB Protection is one possible explanation, but not every slow-charge report after an Android 16 update is caused by it.

“Unlocking did not fix it”
Disconnect and reconnect after unlocking, try a certified cable and the phone maker’s charger, remove adapters and hubs, restart, and test with Device protection temporarily disabled. Persistent problems should go to the phone manufacturer because USB behavior varies by implementation.
“My computer no longer sees the phone”
That is expected for a new data connection made while the phone is locked. Unlock the phone and reconnect the cable. A connection started while unlocked may continue after locking.
“Android Auto stopped connecting”
Unlock the phone before plugging in and approve the connection if prompted. An Android Auto session that was already established while unlocked may remain active after the phone locks.
“The Advanced Protection setting is missing”
Google’s documented support currently covers Pixel 6 and newer. Confirm the model and Android 16 build, look for different security-menu wording, and check the manufacturer’s rollout status.

Should you enable it?
| Choose Advanced Protection if you value | Think twice if you rely on |
|---|---|
| Reduced risk from malicious computers, chargers and peripherals connected to a locked phone. | Fast charging without unlocking the phone. |
| Stronger defenses against targeted attacks and harmful downloads. | Locked-phone connections to cars, docks, monitors, keyboards or storage. |
| A deliberate unlock step before every new USB data session. | Sideloaded apps or accessibility tools that are not verified. |
If a charger still behaves incorrectly after unlocking and reconnecting, test with the phone maker’s recommended USB-C Power Delivery charger and a known-good cable. A new charger can rule out accessory incompatibility, but it cannot bypass USB Protection’s locked-device policy.
The bottom line
Android 16’s USB Protection is a locked-phone USB data blockade, not a universal fast-charging ban. On supported devices, charging normally continues, while fast charging may wait for an unlock because the higher-power handshake can involve USB communication. Unlock before connecting, reconnect if needed, and disable the broader Advanced Protection bundle only when the security trade-off is acceptable.
