Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 was a developer-focused Pixel update, not a major consumer release. It arrived on September 17, 2025, and brought QPR2 to Platform Stability: APIs and app-facing behavior were considered final for the cycle, but the software remained beta and could still be unreliable. Custom app icon shapes were its clearest change for everyday users; developers gained testing support for upcoming verification rules, SMS protections, and other platform updates.
Beta 2 is now a historical release: Google followed it with Beta 3 and then stable Android 16 QPR2 on December 2, 2025. If you are deciding what to install today, do not seek out Beta 2; use the current stable software offered for your device. Google’s QPR2 release notes document the beta sequence and its later fixes.

Those release details come from Google’s Android 16 QPR2 notes and its Beta 2 announcement.
What “Platform Stability” meant—and didn’t
Platform Stability is useful to app developers because it signals that APIs and app-facing behavior changes for the QPR2 cycle are considered final. Developers can test against a less-changing target and prepare apps for the release.

It does not mean the operating system is stable enough for every phone or production use. Google continued to warn that beta builds could have crashes, battery or performance problems, accessibility issues, app incompatibilities, and Play Integrity failures. The distinction matters: a finalized API surface can coexist with an unfinished, occasionally disruptive system.
What changed for Pixel users?
Custom app icon shapes
The most obvious everyday addition was a system-level option for custom app icon shapes, applied across app icons and folder previews. It is a visual customization, not a wholesale redesign or a broad theming overhaul. Exact presentation and availability can vary with the Pixel launcher build, so there is no reliable universal Settings path to give for every device on this historical beta.
ART garbage collection was redesigned to target efficiency
Android Runtime added a generational concurrent mark-compact garbage collector. In broad terms, it focuses collection work on newly allocated objects rather than treating all objects alike. Google said the design could reduce garbage-collection CPU use, improve smoothness and reduce jank, and help battery efficiency.

Those are intended benefits, not a published measurement or a guarantee that every phone would feel faster or last longer. Battery life can also dip temporarily after an OS update while apps optimize, data is indexed, and background services synchronize.

Health Connect gained step and exercise data capabilities
Health Connect can automatically track steps using device sensors, and apps with the READ_STEPS permission can access step data from the Android package. Exercise records also gained fields for weight, set index, and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE). This is most relevant to fitness-app developers and people whose apps make use of those records—not a prominent new phone interface for everyone. Health Connect updates independently of Android, so apps need to check feature availability before relying on new fields.
Developer changes that were more significant than the consumer features
Testing for developer verification
Beta 2 added APIs for apps that support user-initiated package installation, plus an ADB command developers could use to simulate a verification result:
adb shell pm set-developer-verification-resultThe point was to test installer flows, including failure cases, ahead of Google’s planned developer-verification rollout. Google’s documentation said enforcement would begin in September 2026 on certified Android devices in specific regions and described ADB installs as exempt. That is a future policy schedule, not a Beta 2 change that blocked ordinary sideloading. Because enforcement timing and scope can change, consult Google’s current documentation before making decisions based on it.

Google introduced restrictions intended to make it harder for apps to intercept one-time passcodes. For most apps, SMS messages containing an SMS Retriever hash are delayed for three hours: the RECEIVE_SMS broadcast is withheld and queries to the SMS provider database are filtered during that period. There are role-based exemptions, including default SMS, assistant, dialer, connected-device companion, and system apps. Apps using the SMS Retriever API can still receive intended messages promptly.

This is not a three-hour delay on all text messages or all two-factor codes. The effect depends on the app’s access method and role; the change is an anti-abuse measure, not a guarantee that OTP hijacking is impossible. See the Beta 2 announcement for Google’s description.
Minor SDK versions
QPR2 introduced a minor SDK-version mechanism so apps can detect APIs added in a QPR release. Developers can use SDK_INT_FULL and corresponding VERSION_CODES_FULL values; Google also documented Build.getMinorSdkVersion(). Minor releases cannot be selected through the manifest’s uses-sdk attributes. This is implementation detail for app compatibility, not a setting most phone owners need to change.
Which Pixel devices were listed for the beta?
Google’s Beta 2 documentation listed Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL and 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel 9a. That is the documented compatibility list for this beta, not a promise about later Pixel generations, regional variants, or non-Pixel Android phones. Check the device-specific current beta or release page rather than extrapolating from this historical list.

Google’s Beta 2 release notes did not provide a long, Beta 2-specific consumer bug inventory. The reliable baseline is its general warning: beta software can have stability, battery, performance, accessibility, app-compatibility, Google-app, and Play Integrity problems. Builds that are not CTS-approved may also behave differently from certified software.

Later QPR2 notes provide useful context about the kinds of issues Google was still addressing, but they do not prove that every listed bug affected every Beta 2 installation. In Beta 3, Google documented fixes involving failed Google Play System Updates; blank gray home-screen shortcut circles; Wallet lock-screen icon coloring; adaptive charging reaching 100%; occasional failures of the swipe-up gesture; themes not applying on the first try; camera artifacts in 50MP ultrawide or telephoto photos; high launcher CPU use and battery drain, especially on foldables; incorrect Bluetooth call audio routing; and some New Zealand users’ inability to access all 6GHz Wi-Fi networks. The notes also mention terminal crashes or special characters failing after UI/font changes, lag or unresponsiveness while gestures were used together, freezes, screen noise, and unexpected crashes. These are evidence of ongoing QPR2-cycle work, not a safe list of bugs to attribute wholesale to Beta 2.
Some community posts also reported delayed OTA visibility or continued instability. Such reports are anecdotal and may be device-specific; they cannot establish how common a problem was or prove its cause. Treat them as user reports rather than confirmed release-wide defects.

At launch, Beta 2 made sense chiefly for developers who needed to test QPR2 APIs, verification flows, SMS Retriever behavior, or Health Connect integrations, and for enthusiasts comfortable reporting bugs. Platform Stability made it a more useful development target, but not a reason to trust it as a daily-driver release.
- Good fit at the time: app developers, beta enthusiasts with a spare Pixel, and testers who had a recovery plan.
- Poor fit: a primary phone needed reliably for work, banking, travel, medical access, authentication, accessibility, or services that require predictable Play Integrity behavior.
- Not a reason to install: the icon-shape option alone, or a hope of guaranteed battery gains from the new garbage collector.
For a developer without a spare Pixel, Google recommended using 64-bit system images in the Android Emulator. An emulator is safer for app-flow testing, though it cannot reproduce real modem, camera, Bluetooth, or battery behavior. Android Studio is available from Google’s official developer site.

How Beta 2 was installed—and what to do now
When it was current, eligible Pixel owners could enroll in Google’s Android Beta program and receive the build over the air; already-enrolled testers were offered the OTA. Canary users moving into Beta were told that the transition required wiping the device and manually flashing the beta. Beta 2 is now superseded, so do not enroll expecting to receive that build.
If you are evaluating a beta in general, back up before enrollment; secure authenticator and passkey recovery options; and avoid putting a test build on the only phone you need. After updating, check the apps and services you rely on—including banking, enterprise tools, VPN, DRM, Android Auto, Bluetooth, camera, and accessibility features. This is prudent testing, not a claim that each category failed in Beta 2.
If an OTA does not appear
Check that the device is supported and enrolled in the right program, verify enrollment on Google’s beta page, restart, and check for updates again. Availability may be staged, enrollment status may take time to sync, or the device may be on a different preview channel. A delayed notification alone is not a reason to repeatedly factory-reset a phone.
If an app or the phone misbehaves
- Install available app updates through Google Play and update Google Play system components where offered, then restart.
- Note whether the issue began after the OS update and whether it appears after restoring app data. Record the device, build number, and exact steps to reproduce it.
- For a third-party app failure, contact that app’s developer; for a system, device, or Google app issue, use the Android Beta feedback channel or Google Issue Tracker linked from the release notes.
- If the device is unstable, capture a bug report before wiping if you can. Leaving the beta may require a factory reset depending on the offered downgrade path; read the opt-out warning and do not assume your data will be preserved.
What happened after Beta 2?
Google released QPR2 Beta 3 on November 10, 2025, and Android 16 QPR2 stable on December 2, 2025. That later stable release is the relevant endpoint for readers arriving now, rather than a search for an obsolete beta image. Google’s stable-release announcement and the continuing QPR2 release notes provide the official timeline and follow-up details.
