Android 11 is Google’s eleventh major Android release (API level 30), announced on September 8, 2020. It introduced conversation notifications and Bubbles, built-in screen recording, redesigned media and smart-home controls, one-time permissions, automatic permission resets, stronger scoped-storage enforcement, and platform support for newer 5G and foldable hardware.
Android 11 is no longer current in 2026: Google announced Android 17 as its current major release in June 2026. Whether an Android 11 phone remains suitable depends on its exact model, latest security patch, Google Play system-update date, manufacturer policy, carrier, and the apps you need—not on the Android version number alone.
What is Android 11?
Android 11 is the successor to Android 10 and the platform release identified as API level 30. It targets phones, tablets, foldables, enterprise devices, Android Go devices, and other Android implementations. Google’s compatibility definition describes requirements for devices implementing Android 11, but it does not make every phone’s interface identical: Samsung One UI, Xiaomi software, OnePlus OxygenOS, Motorola’s interface, and other manufacturer layers change menus, names, and feature availability. See Google’s Android 11 compatibility definition.

Android 11 release date and rollout
- February 19, 2020: Google published the first Android 11 developer preview.
- September 8, 2020: Google announced the final release and began availability on supported Pixel devices.
- The initial Pixel rollout covered Pixel 2, Pixel 3, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4a models supported by Google at launch.
Other manufacturers and carriers delivered Android 11 on their own schedules. A September 8 announcement was not a universal release date for every Android phone; region, carrier certification, model, and manufacturer policy controlled the actual rollout. Google’s launch announcement is at android-developers.googleblog.com/2020/09/android11-final-release.html.
The major Android 11 features
Conversations and Bubbles
Android 11 gave messaging alerts a dedicated Conversations area so they could be separated from other notifications. Supported conversations could also appear as expandable floating Bubbles. The app had to use the relevant notification APIs, and users or manufacturers could disable or alter the behavior. The exact appearance therefore varied by messaging app, launcher, and phone software. Google’s overview is at blog.google/products-and-platforms/platforms/android/android-11/.
Built-in screen recording
Android 11 added screen recording to the standard Android experience, although some manufacturers had offered their own recorder earlier. On supported phones, the control is usually in Quick Settings; its label and location differ by device. An Android 11 phone is not guaranteed to expose an identical recorder.

Smart-home device controls
Supported implementations could put Google Home controls for lights, thermostats, locks, cameras, plugs, vacuums, TVs, and speakers in the power menu. Typically, you press and hold the power button, open the device-controls panel, choose a compatible device, and tap a control. Google Home setup, compatible hardware, installed software, and the manufacturer’s implementation are all required. See Google’s device-controls help.

Redesigned media controls
Android 11 redesigned playback controls and made switching between a phone, Bluetooth device, and compatible cast target easier. Media-player compatibility and the manufacturer’s interface determined which controls appeared.
One-time permissions
For supported sensitive permissions, Android 11 introduced temporary access choices such as allowing an app to use location, the camera, or the microphone for one occasion. Depending on the permission and device, choices can include Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow. App behavior and the phone’s software determine the exact choices. See Google’s permission guidance.
Automatic permission reset
Android 11 could reset permissions for apps left unused for a long period, reducing the chance that an old app retained sensitive access indefinitely. On supported software, review this under Settings → Apps → select an app → Permissions; an option such as Pause app activity if unused may appear. Menu wording varies.

Approximate location
Where supported, users could give an app approximate rather than precise location. A common review path is Settings → Location → App location permissions → select an app, then choose the available access level. Manufacturer menus can differ substantially. Google documents the controls at support.google.com/android/answer/6179507.

Scoped storage
Android 11 continued the move toward scoped storage, limiting ordinary apps’ access to shared files and other apps’ data. This affected file managers, backup tools, photo applications, and developers that relied on broad filesystem access. It did not block all file access: apps could use approved storage APIs, app-specific directories, media collections, and files selected by the user.
Google Play system updates
Android 11 expanded the number of system components that could be updated through Google Play’s modular infrastructure instead of waiting for a complete manufacturer firmware release. Google said Android 11 added 12 additional updatable modules focused on privacy, security, and consistency; see Google’s Android Enterprise article. A Google Play system update is separate from both a full Android-version upgrade and the manufacturer’s Android security patch.
5G, foldables, and changing screens
The platform added developer-facing support for 5G capabilities, foldable and hinged devices, changing screen configurations, and updated camera and media behavior. These are capabilities, not guarantees: a phone running Android 11 still needs suitable hardware, modem support, carrier certification, and manufacturer software.
How to check whether a phone runs Android 11
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or About device.
- Find Android version.
- Also record the Android security update, Google Play system update, Build number, and the manufacturer software version.
Menu names differ among Pixel, Galaxy, Motorola, OnePlus, Xiaomi, OPPO, and other devices. A phone can report “Android version: 11” while showing a separate One UI, MIUI, HyperOS, OxygenOS, or other manufacturer version.

How to check for and install an Android update
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the phone or connect its charger.
- Back up important photos, messages, and files.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, Software update, or System update; the label depends on the manufacturer.
- Tap Check for update and install any offered package.
- Restart when prompted.
The result may be that the phone is already current for its model, Android 11 is available but not installed, the update is delayed for a region or carrier, major-version support has ended, or installation is blocked by low storage, insufficient charge, rooting, modified firmware, or enterprise management. Google’s update and security guidance is at support.google.com/android/answer/13985942.
If Android 11 does not appear
- Confirm the exact model: similar product names can have different policies. Check model number, region, carrier, storage variant, and current build.
- Install pending updates: update Play Store apps, Google Play components, carrier services, and manufacturer system apps; an intermediate release may be required first.
- Free storage: move or remove large videos, downloads, and unused apps after backing up. Do not delete system files.
- Check modified software: rooted or manually modified phones may not receive normal over-the-air packages.
- Use caution with manual flashing: the wrong regional firmware can erase data, cause boot loops, affect banking, DRM, or enterprise functions, complicate warranty service, and disrupt future OTA updates.
- Ask the manufacturer or carrier: they are authoritative for eligibility on a third-party model.
Is Android 11 still supported and safe in 2026?
Android 11 was released in 2020 and is several generations behind Android 17, which Google announced in June 2026 at developer.android.com/blog/posts/android-17-is-here. There is no single universal date on which every Android 11 phone stopped receiving all updates. Support depends on the model, region, carrier, manufacturer policy, and component involved.
Check the phone’s latest Android security-patch date and Google Play system-update date separately. A device may remain on Android 11 while receiving some vendor, application, or modular updates, but those do not prove that its full firmware is current. Conversely, an Android 11 feature does not prove that the phone is still supported.
For a keep-or-replace decision, assess:
- Security-patch date and the manufacturer’s published end-of-support policy
- Whether banking, work, health, government, and authentication apps still function
- Battery condition, storage, performance, and repair options
- Availability of an official upgrade
- Whether the phone is rooted, running custom firmware, or managed by an employer
- Whether you use the device for sensitive accounts
Android 11 is not automatically unusable, but a device that no longer receives security maintenance is a poor long-term choice for sensitive or business use. Google’s enterprise documentation treats OS version, security patch, application versions, and Google system-update status as separate compliance signals: support.google.com/work/android/answer/13791272.

What Android 11 changed for developers
For developers, Android 11 was more than a visual update. Important compatibility areas included scoped-storage enforcement, one-time permissions, background-location restrictions, package visibility, foreground-service behavior, conversation notifications and Bubbles, 5G APIs, foldable and large-screen support, Bluetooth and connectivity changes, camera and media behavior, and modular system components. Teams needed to test both apps targeting Android 11 and older apps running on Android 11. The platform documentation is at developer.android.com/about/versions/11.
What Android 11 changed for businesses
Android 11 expanded work-profile support on company-owned devices, allowing stronger device-management controls while retaining work-profile privacy for personal use. Enterprise changes included improved provisioning, additional device-policy controls, dedicated-device improvements, StrongBox-related security features on compatible hardware, and more Google Play system-update modules. StrongBox-dependent functions required suitable security hardware, and enterprise behavior still depended on the device maker and management software. See developer.android.com/work/versions/android-11.
Should you replace an Android 11 phone?
Replace or upgrade when the manufacturer has ended security support, essential apps require a newer Android version, battery or storage problems affect reliability, or the phone handles sensitive work without current patches. When comparing replacements, prioritize a guaranteed security-update end date, guaranteed Android-version upgrades, regional and carrier compatibility, battery replacement and repairability, storage and RAM, modem needs, and enterprise certification where relevant. Android Enterprise Recommended requirements discuss update commitments and hardware expectations at android.com/enterprise/recommended/requirements/.
