In July 2024, Austrian satellite observer Felix Schöfbänker photographed the classified U.S. spacecraft publicly designated USA 290 with a 14-inch Dobsonian telescope configured for satellite tracking. His images appeared to show a large rectangular structure unlike those on spacecraft he had previously observed. They do not, however, establish USA 290’s mission or identify that structure. The observation was reported by Space.com on September 19, 2024; it is not a new 2026 discovery.

What Schöfbänker photographed

Schöfbänker made the observation from Upper Austria. This was not a close-up photograph with legible markings: it was a telescopic image of a distant spacecraft moving rapidly across the sky. The object’s designation and orbital presence were already known to satellite observers; the notable part was the attempt to discern its appearance and configuration.

Schöfbänker is an experienced amateur satellite observer, not simply someone pointing a backyard telescope at a passing light. His work involves predicting passes, tracking fast-moving objects, collecting and comparing images, and interpreting apparent shape and motion. His conclusions are informed amateur analysis, not an official identification from the U.S. government or a spacecraft manufacturer.

Why USA 290 drew attention

Schöfbänker estimated that the image showed a rectangular feature about 5 meters (16 feet) long. That is his estimate from the imagery, not an official spacecraft specification. He also said USA 290’s apparent configuration differed from the KH-11-type reconnaissance satellites he had previously imaged, and that its orbit was not sun-synchronous—unlike the orbits generally associated with KH-11 optical-imaging satellites. Space.com’s report describes those observations and comparisons.

The KH-11 connection is a hypothesis, not a confirmed identification. Schöfbänker suspected USA 290 could be related to that family, but considered its visible configuration atypical. He has also compared imagery of other publicly designated spacecraft, including USA 186, USA 224, USA 245 and USA 314. Such comparisons can suggest similarities or differences; they do not establish a satellite’s official type or specifications.

What might the rectangular structure be?

Several explanations are possible: it could be a solar panel, a radiator, a phased-array antenna, or another external structure. Radar-related or signals-intelligence equipment has also been suggested as a possibility. The image does not resolve which explanation is correct. Viewing angle, the spacecraft’s orientation, atmospheric turbulence, motion blur and image processing can all affect the apparent shape and size of a small, distant object.

Even a plausible reconstruction remains an interpretation. A silhouette cannot tell viewers what a sensor can detect, what frequencies a system uses, which ground targets it serves, or whether the spacecraft is operational. Futurism’s September 24, 2024 follow-up, based on the same interview, reported Schöfbänker’s view that government agencies with dedicated observatories would have substantially better imagery.

What “USA 290” tells us—and what it does not

USA 290 is a public designation, not a public mission description. The available reporting does not confirm the spacecraft’s precise purpose or configuration. It may be a classified military or intelligence spacecraft, but the image does not show whether its role is optical imaging, radar, communications, signals intelligence, an experiment, or something else. Calling it definitively a KH-11 replacement or a particular kind of sensor platform goes beyond the evidence.

Nor does the observation establish that the satellite was previously unknown. The story is about photographing an object already known by a public designation, not discovering an unlisted spacecraft. “Secret” refers to classified details and an unconfirmed mission; it does not mean the object is invisible or absent from orbital observation.

How amateurs can track classified satellites

Orbiting objects can be visible even when information about their missions and designs is restricted. Observers can use launch information, sightings and orbital predictions to work out where a satellite is likely to appear. Repeated observations can help refine its position and reveal pass times, brightness, apparent orientation, or possible changes in motion. Amateur satellite tracking has a longer history than this one observation; Space.com has reported on the wider community of observers.

Classified status does not make a spacecraft optically invisible. It limits what is officially disclosed, not whether sunlight reflected from an object in orbit can reach a telescope. The orbit and visible appearance may be observable while mission details, internal hardware and operational purpose remain unknown.

Why this was not an ordinary backyard-telescope observation

The reported instrument was a 14-inch Dobsonian adapted for satellite tracking and imaging. Its large aperture gathers more light, but aperture alone is not enough: the telescope must follow a fast-moving target, the observer needs a timely orbital prediction, and a suitable camera must capture sharp frames before the object moves out of view. Careful timing, alignment, focus, processing and favorable atmospheric conditions also matter.

A manually operated Dobsonian designed for stationary deep-sky objects is a poor stand-in for this setup. A computerized “GoTo” telescope is not automatically a satellite tracker either; compatibility with tracking software and mount controls matters. Celestron’s guidance on satellite tracking discusses using compatible GoTo systems and third-party software, but it should not be read as a universal workflow for every telescope.

  • Orbital data: Predictions can become less accurate as time passes, especially if an object maneuvers or its orbit changes. Stale data may put the telescope in the wrong place.
  • Mount and control: The system must keep pace with the satellite. Ordinary GoTo pointing to astronomical objects does not necessarily provide that motion.
  • Camera and exposure: Rapid capture and short exposures can help avoid turning a moving object into a streak. A long-exposure setup intended for deep-sky images may not suit a fast pass.
  • Conditions and timing: Haze, cloud, low elevation and atmospheric turbulence reduce contrast and detail. Passes are brief, so preparation and accurate timing are important.

A smaller beginner telescope may show bright satellites as moving points, but that is very different from resolving a spacecraft’s shape. Even a large telescope does not promise a useful image: tracking, camera performance, software, viewing conditions and the satellite’s orientation all contribute. Joining an astronomy club or using a public observatory can be a more practical way to try larger equipment than buying a large instrument for this specialized purpose.

What the photograph does—and does not—show

It can support It cannot establish by itself
An observation of the object designated USA 290, and an estimate of its apparent shape at that moment. The spacecraft’s exact mission, official type or internal design.
A reported large external feature and an observer’s comparison with other spacecraft. Whether the feature is a solar panel, radiator, antenna or another component.
Orbital and visual clues that may help observers study the object. Sensor performance, radar frequencies, communications capabilities, targets or operational status.

The episode fits a wider hobby in which observers track sensitive or classified spacecraft, rather than a lone amateur suddenly exposing a complete secret program. Schöfbänker has reported imaging other spacecraft as well. The important distinction is between seeing physical clues and knowing what those clues mean.
