American Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration expanded TSA PreCheck Touchless ID to all of American’s hub airports on April 21, 2026. The optional feature lets eligible AAdvantage members verify their identity with a facial scan at participating TSA PreCheck checkpoints instead of presenting a physical ID or boarding pass at that checkpoint.
It does not replace TSA PreCheck, eliminate security screening, or mean you should leave your identification at home.
What is TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?
Touchless ID is a facial-matching identity-verification process used at selected TSA PreCheck checkpoints. The system compares a live image of the traveler with government-held images previously supplied through documents or programs such as a passport, Global Entry or a visa. American says TSA manages the biometric data.

TSA PreCheck determines whether you receive expedited screening. Touchless ID only changes how your identity is verified at an eligible checkpoint. You still undergo normal TSA screening procedures.

Who can use American’s Touchless ID?
You generally need all of the following:
- A free AAdvantage account.
- TSA PreCheck eligibility through TSA or an eligible CBP program.
- A Known Traveler Number saved to your American profile. Travelers with Global Entry, SENTRI or NEXUS may see a PASS ID rather than a TSA-issued KTN.
- A valid passport saved to the profile.
- Your full name, date of birth, passport number and trusted-traveler information matching the relevant records.
- Touchless ID enrollment and a participating TSA checkpoint.
The program is designed around the American Airlines travel experience. Do not assume that any TSA PreCheck traveler can use the lane regardless of airline or airport.
How to enroll
- Sign in to your AAdvantage account.
- Open Information and password.
- Select Secure traveler.
- Add or verify your passport details and KTN.
- Confirm that your personal information matches your passport exactly.
- Scroll to TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, select the opt-in box and save.
American also allows eligible passengers to opt in during online or app check-in, including through the Ready to Fly hub. Enrollment lasts 12 months, and you can opt out through your AAdvantage preferences.
How to use it at the airport
- Check in through aa.com or the American Airlines app.
- Open your mobile boarding pass and look for the Touchless ID symbol.
- Follow airport signs to the designated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lane.
- Follow the lane instructions for the facial scan.
Keep your physical ID and mobile boarding pass accessible. American says you may use a physical ID at any time, and TSA may ask to see the boarding pass before you enter the lane. “Touchless” does not mean document-free travel.

Airport-level availability does not guarantee that every terminal or checkpoint has an operating Touchless ID lane. Follow airport signage. American’s April announcement described availability at its hubs plus 60 additional airports, while its current page lists 60 airports, so the nationwide total should not be interpreted more broadly than American’s published list.

If your airport does not support Touchless ID, use the ordinary TSA PreCheck lane when your boarding pass carries the TSA PreCheck designation. The Touchless ID symbol may appear even when the departure airport lacks the feature.

Children and family travel
Children aged 17 or younger on the same reservation may accompany the participating adult in the Touchless ID lane, according to American. The children do not use Touchless ID themselves; their boarding passes are scanned. This policy does not automatically apply to children on separate reservations.
What if Touchless ID does not work?
The option is missing from your account
Recheck your AAdvantage profile, passport information, KTN or PASS ID, and name matching. Reopen or update the American app, then try checking in again. If the option remains unavailable, use your physical ID and the standard TSA PreCheck lane if eligible.

The airport is listed but the lane is unavailable
Use airport signs and ask a TSA officer if necessary. The feature operates at select checkpoints, not necessarily throughout the entire airport.
You opted out after checking in
American says opting out after checking in does not remove Touchless ID from that already-eligible trip. Enrollment otherwise lasts 12 months.

Privacy and cost
Participation is voluntary. American says the process uses facial matching and that TSA manages the biometric data. The cited American pages do not establish specific retention periods, deletion procedures or accuracy rates, so those details should not be assumed.

American does not list a separate Touchless ID charge on its program pages. However, you must already qualify for TSA PreCheck or an eligible CBP Trusted Traveler program, which has its own application requirements and possible fees. Joining AAdvantage does not provide TSA PreCheck by itself.
Touchless ID versus CLEAR
Touchless ID and CLEAR are separate services. Touchless ID is an American/TSA PreCheck feature at selected checkpoints and requires the relevant American account setup. CLEAR is a private identity-verification service with its own membership, locations and pricing. Touchless ID is not American’s version of CLEAR, and you do not need CLEAR to use it.
Is it worth activating?
Touchless ID is most useful for frequent American travelers who regularly pass through participating airports and are comfortable with facial verification. It can reduce the need to handle documents during checkpoint entry, but it does not guarantee a shorter line or faster overall screening.

The sensible setup is to activate it if convenient while keeping your physical ID and boarding pass available as a backup.
For travelers choosing a trusted-traveler program, standalone TSA PreCheck is useful for frequent U.S. airport travel. Global Entry may be a better fit for people who regularly return to the United States from international trips. A credit card is not required: the Citi/AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard, for example, is optional and lists a $595 annual fee plus up to $120 every four years toward a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application. That card should not be justified solely by Touchless ID.
Check American’s official Touchless ID page again before traveling because participating airports and checkpoint procedures can change.
