At Gamescom on August 25, 2023, AMD previewed two related but different Radeon technologies: FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3), a game-integrated upscaling and frame-generation system, and HYPR-RX, a one-click Radeon Software profile. AMD named Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum as the first FSR 3 games; their public patches arrived on September 29, 2023. The announcement was historical, not a notice that every game or GPU would receive FSR 3 automatically.
What AMD announced
FSR 3 added frame generation to FSR
FSR 3 was presented as the successor to FSR 2’s temporal upscaling. It retained an updated upscaler and added frame interpolation based on motion information and optical-flow processing. The technology also introduced Native Anti-Aliasing, which lets a game render at native resolution while using FSR’s anti-aliasing and sharpening instead of upscaling.
AMD described FSR 3 as open technology that does not require dedicated machine-learning hardware. It is licensed under the MIT license, but it still requires integration by each game developer; installing a Radeon driver does not add FSR 3 to every title. AMD’s original announcement is at GPUOpen.
HYPR-RX was a software preset, not a new renderer
HYPR-RX was announced as a one-click Radeon Software profile intended to coordinate several existing features. In the 2023 preview, that combination centered on Radeon Anti-Lag+, Radeon Boost and Radeon Super Resolution. It was an automation layer for supported games, not an alternative implementation of FSR 3.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
AMD’s current HYPR-RX documentation describes a broader profile that can include Radeon Super Resolution, FSR, Radeon Anti-Lag, Radeon Boost and Fluid Motion Frames where applicable. Those later capabilities should not be read back into the original August 2023 preview. See AMD’s HYPR-RX page.
How FSR 3 frame generation works
- The game renders a normal frame and supplies motion information.
- FSR 3 analyzes that information alongside optical-flow data.
- It generates an intermediate frame between two rendered frames.
- The swapchain and frame-pacing logic present rendered and generated frames to the display.
AMD said an ideal 60-FPS input could produce as many as 120 displayed frames per second. That is a presentation-rate increase, not the same as rendering 120 independent game-simulation frames. Generated images can make camera movement look smoother, while input response remains tied primarily to the underlying rendered frames and can incur additional latency.

AMD’s later guidance recommends entering frame generation at roughly 60 FPS or higher and avoiding inputs below 30 FPS. A generated frame cannot remove a CPU bottleneck, make the game simulation run faster or guarantee smooth frame pacing. Details are in AMD’s FSR 3 technical notes and developer documentation.
What “up to 2×” means
AMD’s “up to 2×” language describes inserting one frame between existing frames. It is a best-case multiplier for displayed FPS, not a guaranteed performance gain. Results depend on the game engine, resolution, FSR quality mode, GPU and CPU limits, driver, display refresh rate and the quality of the integration.

- A game rendering at 60 FPS may display close to 120 FPS with one generated frame per rendered frame.
- The game still responds like a roughly 60-FPS workload, not a native 120-FPS workload.
- At low input rates, artifacts and uneven pacing are easier to notice.
- Menus, text and HUD elements require careful composition or may flicker and distort.
Initial games and the September 2023 rollout
AMD’s August announcement named Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum for early-fall support. The first public patches adding FSR 3 shipped on September 29, 2023. A publisher’s commitment, developer beta or announced support should not be confused with a released game patch.

Hardware support in AMD’s 2023 guidance
FSR 3 was designed as a cross-vendor technology. AMD’s initial support table listed the following hardware, while stressing that support did not imply equal performance:
Rank #4
- Powered by Radeon RX 9070 XT
- WINDFORCE Cooling System
- Hawk Fan
- Server-grade Thermal Conductive Gel
- RGB Lighting
| Use | AMD support | AMD recommendation | Nvidia support | Nvidia recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 upscaling and frame generation | Radeon RX 590 and newer | Radeon RX 5000 and newer | GeForce GTX 10 Series and newer | GeForce RTX 20 Series and newer |
These were AMD’s initial August 2023 recommendations. Actual availability depends on the game’s integration, graphics API, driver and device configuration. AMD specifically discouraged expecting a good frame-generation experience on hardware below the recommended tiers. Laptop power limits and OEM drivers can also change results.

AMD positioned Anti-Lag+ as a way for Radeon RX 7000 owners to reduce queued frames while using FSR 3. RX 6000 and older Radeon cards could use the existing Anti-Lag feature. Adrenalin 23.9.2, a Windows 10/11 driver release, added Anti-Lag+ support for Starfield, The Witcher 3, Elden Ring and Immortals of Aveum; AMD’s release notes are at AMD Support.
Best Value
- Chipset: AMD RX 9070 XT
- Memory: 16 GB GDDR6
- XFX SWFT Triple Fan Cooling Solution
- Boost Clock Up to 2970 MHz
AMD also claimed latency reductions of up to 45% in selected-title, selected-system testing. That is not a universal result. Anti-Lag+ later drew anti-cheat concerns in some games, so compatibility must be checked for the specific driver and title rather than assumed.
AMD’s published performance results
The following figures came from AMD testing with a Radeon RX 7900 XTX, Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-5200, Windows 11, Adrenalin 23.9.3, DirectX 12, Ultra or Ultra-High settings and the stated resolutions. They are AMD’s results, not independent benchmarks.
| Game and setting | FSR 3 Performance + generation | FSR 3 Performance without generation | FSR off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forspoken, 4K | 164 FPS, 55 ms | 90 FPS, 48 ms | 55 FPS, 81 ms |
| Immortals of Aveum, 4K | 167 FPS, 40 ms | 107 FPS, 37 ms | 57 FPS, 72 ms |
The apparent contradiction is important: generated-frame modes show higher displayed FPS but slightly higher latency than upscaling alone. The extra images improve motion presentation; they do not add equivalent native game updates. Overlays may count generated frames, so distinguish rendered FPS, displayed FPS and frame-time consistency.
When FSR 3 makes sense
Good conditions
- The game has native FSR 3 integration.
- The base rate is already near or above 60 FPS.
- The workload is primarily GPU-limited.
- You have a high-refresh display and value smoother motion.
Poor conditions
- The base rate is below roughly 30–40 FPS.
- A CPU bottleneck limits simulation or produces uneven frame times.
- Artifacts affect text, HUD elements or moving objects.
- You are playing a latency-sensitive competitive game.
- Anti-cheat, overlays or the driver conflict with the implementation.
Frame pacing and settings cautions
FSR 3’s swapchain handles pacing differently depending on whether VSync is enabled. AMD advised checking VSync against the monitor’s refresh behavior and recommended disabling Enhanced Sync because it could interfere with FSR 3 pacing. If motion looks uneven, test those settings, cap the rendered workload appropriately and compare frame-time graphs rather than relying on the headline FPS counter.

What happened after the preview
FSR 3 and HYPR-RX became parts of a larger AMD software strategy, with later driver features and frame-generation technologies appearing after the 2023 launch. Those later releases do not change what AMD announced in August 2023: FSR 3 was a developer-integrated, cross-vendor rendering feature, while HYPR-RX was a Radeon Software convenience profile. For a buying decision, prioritize the games you actually play, sustained pre-generation FPS, VRAM, resolution and independent benchmarks—not a “2×” label alone.
