AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.30.17.02 is a targeted Windows driver release whose main addition is support for VK_EXT_descriptor_heap. AMD listed the package on January 23, 2026, for selected Radeon RX 9000-, RX 7000-, Radeon AI PRO, and mobile Radeon products.
This is primarily an API-enablement update for Vulkan developers and applications—not a general gaming-performance driver. It is also no longer AMD’s newest Vulkan-support package: AMD’s support history lists version 26.6.1, released June 2, 2026, as a later release that includes the same extension plus three others.
What changed in Adrenalin 25.30.17.02?
AMD’s release notes identify one headline feature: VK_EXT_descriptor_heap. The package is labeled AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.30.17.02 for Expanded Vulkan Extension Support, distinguishing it from a conventional feature-heavy Adrenalin release.

What is VK_EXT_descriptor_heap?
Vulkan is a low-level graphics and compute API that gives applications explicit control over many parts of the GPU pipeline. Applications use descriptors to tell shaders where resources such as buffers, textures, and samplers are located and how they should be accessed.
A descriptor-heap extension provides an implementation path for software that wants to manage shader-resource descriptors in designated GPU memory regions. That can matter to game engines, emulators, translation layers, and other graphics applications pursuing more explicit or scalable resource-management strategies.

The important limitation is that driver support alone does not change an existing game. An application must first detect the extension and then implement a compatible code path. The usual chain is:
- The AMD driver exposes the extension.
- The application enumerates available device extensions.
- Developers implement and enable the extension where appropriate.
- The application may then gain compatibility, efficiency, or performance benefits from that path.
Those benefits are conditional. VK_EXT_descriptor_heap is an individual Vulkan extension, not a new Vulkan core version and not evidence of “Vulkan 1.5” support. The authoritative references for extension behavior are the Khronos Vulkan Registry and the Vulkan specification.
Does the driver improve gaming performance?
Not automatically. AMD’s release notes announce extension support, not a general frame-rate increase or benchmarked improvement.
A game or application that does not use VK_EXT_descriptor_heap should not be expected to gain a measurable benefit merely because the driver is installed. Software that adopts the extension could benefit from a different resource-binding path, but the result will depend on the engine, application implementation, GPU architecture, driver behavior, and workload.

Therefore, 25.30.17.02 is best viewed as a compatibility and capability release. It may enable future or updated Vulkan software, but it is not a universal FPS upgrade.
Supported Radeon products
AMD’s compatibility list covers specific products rather than every Radeon GPU in a generation.

Do not interpret this as blanket support for every RX 7000-series model. In particular, AMD’s page should not be expanded to include desktop RX 7600 graphics unless a separate AMD compatibility page confirms it. The listed release notes also do not establish support for all older Radeon generations, all RDNA 1 or RDNA 2 products, or every Ryzen-based integrated GPU.
Laptop, all-in-one, and handheld limitations
AMD says laptop and all-in-one owners should generally use drivers supplied by the computer manufacturer. OEM packages may include system-specific validation and integration for hybrid graphics, display switching, power management, sleep behavior, hotkeys, and other hardware features.

Supported Windows versions
AMD lists the following operating-system requirements:
- Windows 11 version 21H2 or later.
- Windows 10 64-bit version 21H2 or later.
Operating-system eligibility does not guarantee that every GPU, laptop, or integrated-graphics configuration is supported. The exact Radeon model and system design still matter.
Is 25.30.17.02 the latest AMD Vulkan driver?
No. AMD’s Vulkan driver-support history places 25.30.17.02 on January 23, 2026. That history also lists newer releases, including:

As of August 18, 2026, AMD’s Vulkan Driver Support history shows that 25.30.17.02 has been superseded. A newer compatible Adrenalin release is generally the better choice for ordinary users because it may include later fixes, application support, and additional Vulkan capabilities.
Should you install 25.30.17.02?
For most users, install a newer compatible AMD driver instead. The older package makes sense in narrower situations:
- You need to reproduce a specific driver version for development or testing.
- An application vendor specifically requests 25.30.17.02.
- You need the extension on a supported GPU and a newer compatible package is unavailable or unsuitable.
- You are maintaining a controlled test environment tied to this release.
If you simply want the latest Vulkan support, are troubleshooting a current game, or want current driver fixes, the newer driver is the more sensible option.

Installation guidance
Before installing any AMD graphics driver:
- Confirm the exact GPU model in Windows or the system documentation.
- Check whether the computer is a laptop, all-in-one, or handheld. Prefer the OEM driver on laptops and all-in-ones unless there is a specific reason to use AMD’s package.
- Create a restore point or confirm that another recovery method is available.
- Close games and GPU-intensive applications.
- Run the installer with administrator privileges.
- Restart Windows when prompted, or after installation completes.
- Verify Vulkan operation with an application or capability-reporting tool.
Do not use unofficial INF modifications to force the driver onto an unsupported GPU. An installer rejection can simply mean that the exact product is outside AMD’s listed compatibility set.
When should you use AMD Cleanup Utility?
A normal upgrade or reinstall does not automatically require a cleanup pass. AMD Cleanup Utility is more appropriate when a normal installation fails, when switching from a special-purpose or preview package, or when remnants of an earlier driver are causing problems.
AMD recommends Safe Mode for the best results with the utility. It removes AMD graphics and audio drivers and software, after which Windows must be restarted before installing the replacement driver. AMD documents the process in its Cleanup Utility guide.
Temporary display flicker or a blank screen can occur during driver removal or installation. If the system becomes unstable, reboot first, check Device Manager and the installed driver version, then reinstall the OEM or latest compatible AMD driver. If necessary, restore the previous driver.
How to verify that the extension is available
Installation does not by itself prove that a particular application can use the extension. Verification should happen at the Vulkan-device level.
- Use a current Vulkan capability-reporting utility, such as GPU-Z, if its version identifies the extension.
- Run an application or engine that enumerates Vulkan device extensions.
- For development, enumerate device extensions through Vulkan’s standard device-extension enumeration APIs and enable the extension only when the target runtime reports it.
- Test across the GPUs, drivers, operating modes, and translation layers that the application intends to support.
If an application still reports the extension as unavailable, possible causes include an unsupported GPU, an active OEM or different driver, the wrong Vulkan installable client driver (ICD), an incomplete driver replacement, a translation layer, or an application that has not implemented the extension. The extension may also vary by device or operating mode.
There is no AMD Adrenalin control-panel switch documented for enabling this feature. Applications must query and use the Vulkan capability themselves.
Bottom line
AMD Software Adrenalin Edition 25.30.17.02 was a focused January 2026 release that introduced AMD-listed Windows support for VK_EXT_descriptor_heap on selected newer Radeon products. Its importance is mainly for Vulkan developers and applications that explicitly adopt the extension—not for automatic improvements in every game.
Because AMD later listed the same extension in version 26.6.1 along with additional Vulkan extensions, ordinary users should generally choose the newest compatible AMD or OEM driver rather than install 25.30.17.02 solely for gaming performance.
