AMD Shader Cache should normally be left enabled or set to AMD Optimized. It stores prepared shader data so games do not have to repeat the same compilation work, which can reduce CPU usage, loading time, and compilation-related hitching. AMD provides a Reset Shader Cache control for troubleshooting driver-level cache problems.
Resetting the cache is useful after some driver or game updates, suspected corruption, visual errors, or repeated shader recompilation. It is not a routine FPS boost, and the next launch may temporarily load more slowly or stutter while the cache is rebuilt.
What is AMD Shader Cache?
A shader is a small program used by a game’s graphics engine to render lighting, shadows, materials, reflections, particles, and post-processing effects. Before the GPU can use many of these shaders, the game or graphics driver must prepare them for the specific combination of GPU, driver, Windows version, game build, and graphics API.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →That preparation can consume CPU time and storage activity. If it happens while you are entering a new area or seeing an effect for the first time, the game may briefly hitch. AMD Shader Cache stores previously compiled or prepared shader-related data so the same work can often be reused later. AMD says the feature can reduce CPU usage and improve game loading times. AMD’s support documentation recommends leaving it enabled for an optimal gaming experience.

The cache is not one universal folder or one complete record of every shader used by every game. Different games, APIs, Windows components, and distribution platforms may maintain additional caches.
Should AMD Shader Cache be enabled?
Yes, in normal circumstances. Use AMD Optimized or the current enabled/default setting in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Disabling shader caching is not a general performance tweak and will usually make repeated compilation and loading work more likely.
Disabling it can be useful as a short, controlled diagnostic test—for example, if you are isolating a driver-specific problem—but it should not be the default solution to stutter. If you suspect stale or corrupted data, resetting the cache is more appropriate than leaving caching disabled.

The exact placement and wording can vary between Adrenalin releases, installation types, GPU generations, and OEM-customized drivers. Look for these stable labels:
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Open Gaming.
- Open Graphics or the global graphics settings page.
- Expand Advanced if necessary.
- Find Reset Shader Cache.
- Select Perform Reset, Reset, or the equivalent confirmation button.
- Close and relaunch the affected game.
AMD describes this control as deleting stored shader cache files. It does not necessarily remove Windows DirectX cache data, Steam-managed shader data, or a game’s own pipeline cache.

What to expect after resetting
The first launch—or the first visit to shader-heavy areas—may take longer and may hitch temporarily. That is normally the cache rebuilding, not proof that the reset failed. Let the game run long enough to recreate its data before judging the result.
A reset does not permanently increase average FPS. If the old cache was healthy, clearing it can temporarily make loading and compilation worse until the data is rebuilt.
AMD Shader Cache versus other shader caches
| Cache | Controlled by | Typical reason to clear |
|---|---|---|
| AMD driver shader cache | AMD Software and the Radeon driver | Suspected driver-level corruption or problems after an update |
| Windows DirectX Shader Cache | Windows | A suspected stale DirectX cache or broader Windows graphics-stack issue |
| Game cache | The individual game or engine | Title-specific rendering, pipeline, or compilation problems |
| Steam shader data | Steam and the game’s distribution layer | Problems with Steam-managed shader pre-caching |
These layers are related but not interchangeable. Resetting AMD’s cache does not guarantee that the game, Windows, or Steam will discard its own shader data.
How to clear the Windows DirectX Shader Cache
Clear this separately when AMD’s reset does not resolve a suspected Windows-level cache problem:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage > Temporary files.
- Look for DirectX Shader Cache.
- Select only that item if you do not want to remove other temporary files.
- Confirm the cleanup.
Depending on the Windows build, you can also use Disk Cleanup, select the system drive, and choose DirectX Shader Cache. Labels and availability can vary.

The path C:Users<username>AppDataLocalD3DSCache is commonly associated with Windows’ DirectX cache, but manually deleting arbitrary cache folders should not be the first-line method. AMD-specific locations can vary by driver and installation. Use Adrenalin’s supported reset control for the AMD cache.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen should you reset the cache?
A reset is reasonable when:
- Stuttering begins immediately after a Radeon driver update.
- A game receives a major patch or changes its graphics API.
- Visual corruption, crashes, or abnormal loading begin after an update.
- The game repeatedly recompiles shaders that should already be cached.
- A game developer specifically recommends clearing shader data.
- You suspect a damaged or stale driver cache.
AMD’s release notes document title- and driver-specific shader-cache and shader-compilation issues, including unusually long compilation or loading in particular games. Those reports are evidence that such problems can occur, not proof that every stutter is an AMD cache fault. See examples in AMD’s 24.3.1 release notes, 23.4.3 release notes, and 23.11.1 release notes.
When should you leave it alone?
Do not reset the cache merely because it exists, occupies disk space, or has grown after playing several games. A cache normally regenerates data. There is no general need to clear it weekly or monthly, and a large cache by itself does not prove corruption.
Do not treat a reset as a universal fix for stutter. Shader compilation is only one possible cause. Asset streaming, CPU saturation, memory pressure, unstable overclocking or undervolting, overlays, storage delays, driver bugs, and poor frame pacing can produce similar symptoms.
What to do if stuttering continues
- Confirm the pattern. Shader-related hitching often occurs on the first encounter with an effect or location. Stutter that continues indefinitely points to a broader problem.
- Update the game and verify its files. A damaged or incomplete game installation can recreate rendering problems.
- Leave AMD Shader Cache enabled. Do not disable it as a permanent workaround.
- Reset the AMD cache in Adrenalin, then restart the game and allow it to rebuild.
- Clear Windows DirectX Shader Cache separately if the problem appears broader than one game.
- Check the game’s own settings and support documentation. Some games offer shader precompilation, pipeline-cache reset, or a first-launch shader-building process.
- Disable overlays and recording tools temporarily. Also remove GPU overclocks or undervolts while testing.
- Check driver release notes. A title-specific regression may require updating, reverting, or waiting for a driver fix.
- Consider a clean driver reinstall only as an escalation.
Why the cache may become large again
After a reset, the cache can grow again as you play different games or revisit different effects. Regeneration also occurs after a driver change, game update, graphics-API change, cache reset, or altered shader-compilation setting. Multiple games can produce separate data, so there is no single safe maximum size that applies to every system.

If “Reset Shader Cache” is missing
The control may be absent because the installed package is Driver Only, the menu moved in your Adrenalin version, the option is hidden under Advanced, the system uses an OEM-customized driver, or the computer runs another AMD software branch such as Radeon PRO software.
Identify the correct package for your GPU and Windows version through AMD’s official driver page. Avoid replacing a working OEM driver indiscriminately, particularly on laptops.
When AMD Cleanup Utility is appropriate
AMD Cleanup Utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers and software before a fresh installation. AMD recommends Safe Mode for the best results and says a reboot is required for the changes to take effect.
It is not the normal equivalent of Reset Shader Cache. Use it for repeated driver-installation failures, suspected driver corruption, or persistent problems after less disruptive troubleshooting—not for ordinary first-launch shader stutter.
Common myths
“Clearing the cache boosts FPS.”
Usually, no. Clearing it removes reusable data. It may help if stale or corrupted data is causing a problem, but AMD’s documented benefits concern loading time and CPU work rather than a guaranteed increase in average frame rate.

“The AMD reset clears every shader cache.”
No. Windows, Steam, and individual games may retain separate shader or pipeline data.
“Every hitch is shader compilation.”
No. A cache reset cannot fix every form of traversal stutter, asset-streaming delay, CPU bottleneck, unstable tuning, or frame-pacing problem.
“Shader compilation happens only at launch.”
Not necessarily. Some games compile during play when a new area, effect, or pipeline state is encountered.
Recommended Free Tools
“I should disable shader caching after every driver update.”
No. Keep it enabled normally. Reset it after an update only when symptoms justify doing so.
Where newer shader-delivery systems fit
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a newer delivery model intended to provide precompiled shaders before gameplay. AMD support depends on specific drivers, hardware, games, and distribution conditions. It does not replace ordinary AMD Shader Cache for every game, so the two should not be treated as identical systems.
