AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 was a real pre-release leak, not a processor that reached stores under that name. ASUS briefly listed the model in a VivoBook S 16 OLED configuration in May 2024. The listing pointed to AMD’s Zen 5 “Strix Point” mobile platform and a new AI-focused naming system. Before retail laptops shipped, AMD replaced the leaked designation with Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
What ASUS accidentally revealed
ASUS briefly exposed an upcoming VivoBook S 16 OLED configuration identified with an “AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 170” processor. The page was later removed, but screenshots and cached details were reported by hardware publications, including AnandTech and Tom’s Hardware.
This was an OEM product-page leak, not an AMD announcement or an official specification sheet. The appearance of the name was credible evidence of a planned product designation, while the technical details attached to it remained pre-launch information.
The laptop context also matters. A 16-inch OLED VivoBook is thin and portable, but it is not necessarily a sub-1-kilogram ultraportable. Its larger chassis can accommodate more battery and cooling than a 13- or 14-inch system, so the listing showed that AMD expected the new chips to appear in thin-and-light designs, not that every HX-equipped laptop would have the same size or behavior.

How to read “Ryzen AI 9 HX 170”
Ryzen AI
“Ryzen AI” placed AI acceleration directly in the family name. It signaled a processor platform with a neural-processing component intended for supported local AI workloads, part of the 2024 industry shift toward AI PCs and competing branding such as Intel’s Core Ultra. The name alone did not prove Copilot+ eligibility, a particular NPU score, or compatibility with every AI application.
9
The “9” indicated AMD’s premium consumer performance tier, similar to earlier high-end mobile names such as Ryzen 9 7940HS and Ryzen 9 8945HS.
HX
“HX” suggested a high-performance mobile positioning. It did not specify a universal wattage: laptop manufacturers can set different power limits and cooling profiles for the same processor.

170
The three-digit number was an early generation or model identifier in a proposed naming system. It was not a clock speed, core count, wattage, or direct performance rating. A larger-looking number should not be interpreted as a benchmark score.
What specifications were reported?
Contemporary coverage based on the ASUS information associated the leak with AMD’s Zen 5 “Strix Point” mobile platform. TechSpot reported the following details:
| Item | Leaked indication | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Model name | Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 | High confidence that the name appeared in ASUS material |
| Architecture | Zen 5 / Strix Point | Platform association supported by later reporting |
| CPU configuration | 12 cores and 24 threads | Reported from the leak, not an AMD launch specification for HX 170 |
| Maximum clock | Up to 5.1 GHz | Reported pre-release figure, not a retail HX 170 specification |
| Integrated graphics | Radeon 880M in early reports | Early leak detail; do not treat it as a final shipped HX 170 specification |
These figures should therefore be described as reported leak details. They should not be confused with benchmark results for the later retail processor or presented as specifications from an AMD product page.

The name changed before launch
The decisive follow-up came from later reporting on an early Strix Point prototype. The proposed 100-series naming was replaced by the Ryzen AI 300 family. The leaked Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 became Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, while the leaked Ryzen AI 9 165 became Ryzen AI 9 365. Notebookcheck’s Computex retrospective documented that transition.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That means “Ryzen AI 9 HX 170” is best treated as a development-stage or superseded designation. It did not become a normal retail CPU identity. The final “370” is a series model number, not an indication that the chip has 37 cores or that AMD increased the core count from 12 to 37.
Why AMD changed the number
AMD has not publicly confirmed a specific reason for switching from “170” to “370.” The evidence is consistent with several practical branding goals: aligning the chips under a Ryzen AI 300 family, separating them from earlier mobile generations, and coordinating the processor and platform launch under one clearer series. Those are informed interpretations, not an official explanation.

What the leak meant for thin-and-light laptops
Power and cooling still determine performance
An HX label can support stronger sustained multicore performance, but it can also require more cooling, fan noise and power. A manufacturer may run the same HX 370 at a conservative limit in a thin laptop or allow higher sustained power in a thicker design. Short benchmark bursts therefore cannot predict every laptop’s long-term behavior.
Integrated graphics depend on the whole system
Integrated Radeon performance is strongly affected by memory bandwidth, memory capacity, firmware and thermals. Soldered LPDDR5X may provide bandwidth advantages while removing upgrade options. Two laptops with the same processor can deliver noticeably different graphics results.

OLED and battery trade-offs
A high-resolution, high-refresh OLED panel can improve image quality but may consume more power than a lower-power LCD, especially with bright content. Battery capacity, display settings and firmware tuning matter alongside the processor’s NPU and CPU.

How to evaluate a real Ryzen AI laptop today
When shopping, search for the final name Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, not “HX 170,” and compare the complete laptop configuration:
- Confirm the final CPU name. Treat HX 170 listings as references to an early leak unless the manufacturer clearly identifies the actual retail processor.
- Check the configured power profile. Look for measured sustained performance, temperatures and fan noise rather than relying on the HX suffix.
- Verify memory. Note capacity, LPDDR5X or other memory type, bandwidth and whether RAM is upgradeable.
- Inspect graphics hardware. Determine whether the system uses integrated Radeon graphics or adds a discrete GPU.
- Compare the NPU and software support. AI acceleration helps only when applications can use it; the branding does not guarantee acceleration for every workload.
- Review display and battery details. Resolution, refresh rate, OLED behavior and battery capacity can materially change battery life.
- Read laptop-specific testing. Firmware, cooling and power tuning can make two machines with the same processor perform differently.
Where the leaked name may still appear
Old articles, screenshots, cached ASUS pages and prototype references may still mention HX 170. That does not mean AMD sold a separate retail chip under that identity. For current specifications and products, use AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 information and verify the exact laptop configuration.
The ASUS families connected with this story include the VivoBook S 16 OLED and Zenbook S 16. Their suitability depends on the specific RAM, display, cooling and power configuration, not just the processor label.

Bottom line
Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 was a genuine ASUS listing leak that previewed AMD’s shift toward Ryzen AI branding and a new three-digit mobile model system. It was associated with the Zen 5 Strix Point generation and reported as a high-end 12-core, 24-thread part with up to 5.1 GHz, but those were pre-launch leak details. AMD changed the retail designation to Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. Buyers researching laptops today should use the HX 370 name and judge the complete system’s power, cooling, memory, display and battery configuration.
