A delidded AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D reportedly reached almost 6 GHz in an enthusiast experiment—roughly 200–300 MHz above AMD’s official maximum boost clock of 5.7 GHz. The result is credible as an individual demonstration, but it is not evidence of a normal, guaranteed, or all-core 6 GHz overclock.
Delidding appears to have created substantial thermal headroom, with separate testing reporting temperatures up to approximately 23°C lower at stock settings. However, the final frequency also depended on the specific CPU sample, cooling system, firmware, tuning settings, workload, and the quality of the stability testing.

AMD also provides tuning features including Ryzen Master, Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO), and Curve Optimizer. These features are supported ways to adjust how the processor manages voltage, power, temperature, and boost behavior, but they do not make every resulting setting an in-spec or warranty-covered configuration. AMD warns that operating outside published specifications can void the applicable processor warranty and may cause damage, reduced performance, data loss, or corruption.

The chip’s 3D V-Cache design makes thermal management particularly important. The additional cache is part of the package stack, so heat must travel through more layers before reaching the integrated heat spreader and cooler.

What “almost 6 GHz” actually means
The headline number needs careful interpretation. “Almost 6 GHz” might describe a momentary peak reported by monitoring software, a lightly threaded boost event, a gaming observation, or a sustained benchmark frequency. Those are very different claims.
The available report does not establish a universal all-core 5.9 GHz overclock on all 16 cores. Nor does it provide enough independently verified methodology to treat the result as a repeatable benchmark standard. The safest description is that the modified processor reportedly peaked near 6 GHz and was described by its owner as stable.
| Item | What is established |
|---|---|
| Official maximum boost | Up to 5.7 GHz |
| Modified result | Almost 6 GHz, according to an enthusiast report |
| Frequency type | Not independently established as sustained all-core operation |
| Thermal result | Up to approximately 23°C lower in separate delidding testing |
| Reported coverage | Published around March 2025 |
The distinction matters because a single-core peak near 6 GHz is much less demanding than holding 5.9 GHz across a long, heavily threaded workload. A credible report of the former should not be rewritten as proof of the latter.

Why delidding can improve overclocking headroom
The integrated heat spreader (IHS), the thermal interface beneath it, and the package stack all add thermal resistance between the silicon and the cooler. Removing the IHS can shorten that thermal path and improve contact between the die and a compatible cooling solution.
Lower temperatures can help AMD’s Precision Boost algorithm sustain higher clocks for longer. They may also allow a particular chip to remain stable at a higher frequency or to gain more from PBO and Curve Optimizer tuning. That is thermal headroom, not a change to the silicon’s intrinsic electrical limit or quality bin.
Separate testing of a delidded 9950X3D reportedly measured a temperature reduction of up to about 23°C even at stock settings. That supports the thermal explanation for the experiment, but it does not mean every processor will gain the same amount or reach the same frequency.
Read the cited delidding temperature testing for its reported conditions.
How the reported experiment was done
The enthusiast reportedly used an improvised method involving a clothes iron and string to assist with removing the CPU’s heat spreader, then used water cooling. The original IHS was reportedly retained or reused as part of the broader setup, and the owner described the resulting system as stable.

This is not a recommended consumer procedure. An improvised delidding method can damage the die, substrate, package components, capacitors, or surrounding materials. Direct-die cooling also requires correct mounting pressure and a cooler or frame specifically compatible with the 9950X3D. A bracket made for another AM5 processor is not automatically safe to use.

The almost-6-GHz claim comes from secondary coverage of the enthusiast report, rather than an independently replicated laboratory test. Its clock, cooling, and stability claims should therefore remain attributed to the original user.
What ordinary owners should try first
Most 9950X3D owners should not delid the processor. A sensible tuning path uses AMD’s automatic boost controls and conservative voltage-frequency optimization:
- Update the BIOS and AMD chipset drivers. Record the BIOS version and save default settings before changing anything.
- Establish a stock baseline. Record performance, effective clocks, temperatures, package power, and pump or fan behavior.
- Enable EXPO carefully. Test the memory independently before blaming CPU tuning for crashes.
- Enable PBO. Start with motherboard or AMD defaults rather than immediately applying aggressive limits.
- Use Curve Optimizer conservatively. Begin with a small negative offset, then test. Do not copy another CPU’s -20, -25, or -30 value as a universal recipe.
- Tune per CCD or per core. Cores vary; a value that works on one core can fail on another, particularly during light loads or idle.
- Consider a modest boost override only after stability is established. Stop when temperatures rise sharply or performance gains flatten.
- Revert at the first sign of instability. Random restarts, WHEA errors, application crashes, calculation errors, and clock stretching all count as failures.
On MSI motherboards, Curve Optimizer is generally found through the AMD Overclocking and Precision Boost Overdrive menus. MSI’s 9950X3D Curve Optimizer guide is useful for the menu path and concepts, but its example values are not guaranteed to work on another chip.
What Curve Optimizer changes
Curve Optimizer is an adaptive voltage/frequency adjustment, not simply a fixed all-core overclock. A negative value can reduce the voltage requested at a given operating point, lowering power and temperature. Precision Boost may then use the extra margin to increase frequency.

An aggressive negative value can instead produce:
- Random reboots or application crashes.
- WHEA hardware errors in Windows Event Viewer.
- Instability during idle, sleep, or light workloads.
- Silent calculation errors.
- Clock stretching, where the reported clock rises but effective performance does not.
For that reason, a setting that completes one Cinebench run is not proven stable. Lightly threaded workloads can stress different cores from an all-core render, and memory-heavy applications can expose problems that a short CPU benchmark misses.
A practical stability-validation plan
Baseline and monitoring
- Record stock and tuned results using the same benchmark version and settings.
- Monitor package temperature, effective clock, CPU power, and fan or pump speeds with a tool such as HWiNFO.
- Check Windows Event Viewer for WHEA-Logger errors.
- Record ambient temperature, cooler type, radiator size, memory speed, and BIOS version.
Short screening tests
Use Cinebench R23 or 2024 for quick comparisons, OCCT for CPU and memory testing, and a repeatable Blender workload for a longer rendering check. These can identify obvious failures, but passing one test is not a complete stability verdict.
Long validation
Run several hours of mixed CPU testing, multiple gaming sessions, cold boots, warm reboots, idle periods, and sleep-wake cycles. If Curve Optimizer is configured per core, include light-load and per-core testing. Test with EXPO disabled if necessary to separate memory instability from CPU instability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why X3D processors require extra caution
3D V-Cache processors should not be treated exactly like conventional Ryzen CPUs for manual voltage and fixed-frequency tuning. Automatic boosting with sensible PBO and Curve Optimizer settings is generally preferable to forcing a high fixed all-core voltage and frequency.
Motherboard “auto overclock” options may also apply more aggressive power or voltage behavior than their simplified labels suggest. A single generic temperature reading may not fully describe every thermal condition in the package, and a system can be unstable even when its displayed peak temperature looks acceptable.

Common problems and recovery steps
| Symptom | Likely response |
|---|---|
| Boot loop after Curve Optimizer changes | Clear CMOS or use the board’s safe-boot or recovery procedure, then reduce the negative offset. |
| Random idle reboots | Reduce the Curve Optimizer magnitude, especially on lightly loaded or preferred cores. |
| WHEA errors without a crash | Treat them as instability and back off the setting. |
| Higher reported clocks but no benchmark gain | Check effective clocks for clock stretching. |
| High temperatures after delidding | Check die-to-cooler contact, mounting pressure, thermal interface application, pump operation, and sensor interpretation. |
| Crashes that disappear when EXPO is disabled | Investigate memory stability before changing CPU voltage or frequency. |
| Behavior changes after a BIOS update | Recheck PBO limits, Curve Optimizer values, memory settings, and recovery options. |
Is delidding the 9950X3D worth it?
For most users, no. Delidding is a high-risk physical modification with no guarantee of a meaningful performance gain. It can destroy a premium processor, complicate cooler mounting, reduce long-term reliability, and affect warranty coverage. The value of a few additional percentage points is rarely worth that risk for a daily-use gaming or productivity system.
It may make sense for a narrow group of experienced enthusiasts who accept total CPU loss, understand AM5 package construction, have compatible direct-die or re-lidding equipment, and are pursuing benchmark records or experimentation rather than value.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore considering it, improve cooler mounting, case airflow, BIOS and chipset firmware, memory stability, PBO behavior, and Curve Optimizer tuning. A strong 280- or 360-mm liquid cooler or a high-end dual-tower air cooler can provide most of the practical benefit without modifying the processor.
Verdict
The delidded Ryzen 9 9950X3D reaching almost 6 GHz is an impressive enthusiast result and is technically plausible because delidding can substantially reduce thermal resistance. But it should be understood as a silicon-dependent, user-reported peak—not as a standard retail overclock or proof of sustained all-core 6 GHz operation.
For normal owners, updated firmware, EXPO, PBO, conservative Curve Optimizer tuning, effective cooling, and comprehensive stability testing are the rational route. Delidding belongs to extreme overclocking, where the experiment itself matters more than reliability, warranty protection, or value.
