Why the Ryzen 9 name does not make it faster
AMD’s Ryzen 9 branding identifies a premium product tier within AMD’s mobile range, but the 8945HS remains an eight-core HS processor. The i7-14650HX has 16 physical cores, although those cores are split between eight performance cores and eight efficiency cores. Its eight E-cores are useful for throughput, but they are not equivalent to eight additional full-size P-cores.

The Intel chip also has a much higher potential power limit. AMD lists a 35–54 W configurable range for the 8945HS, while Intel specifies 55 W processor base power and up to 157 W maximum turbo power for the i7-14650HX. That extra electrical and thermal headroom is the main reason the Intel processor can deliver more sustained multi-core performance.
Both processors can boost to 5.2 GHz, but that figure is a maximum short-duration boost, not an all-core operating speed. Architecture, cache, core type, cooling, firmware, and power limits determine real performance.
Performance: Intel leads sustained multi-core work
In a properly cooled laptop running an unrestricted performance mode, the Core i7-14650HX should generally be faster for CPU rendering, code compilation, compression, simulation, virtual machines, and heavy parallel multitasking. Its additional cores and 30 MB cache give it a clear throughput advantage when software can use many threads.
A PassMark comparison has reported the Ryzen 9 8945HS at roughly 13% below the i7-14650HX in multi-threaded CPU Mark performance. Treat that as a directional database snapshot, not a guaranteed difference between every laptop. PassMark aggregates results from systems with different cooling designs, RAM, BIOS settings, power modes, and software conditions.
The gap can narrow when the Intel laptop is power-limited or thermally constrained. A well-cooled Ryzen laptop may also provide more consistent performance than a thin HX system that quickly throttles. Short tests, poorly threaded applications, single-channel memory, and vendor-specific performance modes can further change the result.

Single-core performance
Neither processor is automatically the winner in every single-threaded application. The i7-14650HX may lead in some tests, while the Ryzen 9 8945HS can remain competitive in short or efficiency-focused workloads. Maximum clock speed alone is not enough to predict the result, because both chips advertise up to 5.2 GHz and may sustain that boost for different lengths of time.
Gaming: compare the GPU before the CPU
When both laptops use a similar discrete GPU, the CPU difference is often less important than the graphics subsystem. Check these specifications first:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Discrete GPU model and its total graphics power (TGP or wattage)
- Cooling capacity and whether the laptop sustains its advertised GPU power
- MUX switch or Advanced Optimus support
- RAM capacity, speed, and dual-channel configuration
- Display resolution and refresh rate
- Performance-mode behavior when the charger is connected
At 1080p with a powerful discrete GPU and a high-refresh display, the i7-14650HX can produce higher average frame rates or better minimums in CPU-bound games. At higher resolutions, or with a midrange GPU, the graphics processor is more likely to be the bottleneck and the difference may become small.
Do not compare a Ryzen laptop with an RTX 4070 directly against an Intel laptop with an RTX 4060 and attribute the gaming result to the CPU. The GPU model and wattage normally have a much larger effect.
Integrated graphics: a clear AMD advantage
The Ryzen 9 8945HS includes Radeon 780M integrated graphics with 12 graphics cores and a graphics frequency of up to 2.8 GHz. The i7-14650HX includes Intel UHD Graphics with 16 execution units and a maximum dynamic frequency of 1.6 GHz. The number of Intel execution units should not be read as a direct performance comparison: the Radeon 780M is substantially more capable.

That makes the AMD chip the better choice for a laptop without a discrete GPU, including light gaming, older games, esports titles, video playback, and GPU-accelerated desktop work. Integrated-graphics performance depends heavily on memory bandwidth. Fast LPDDR5X or dual-channel DDR5 can perform much better than a system with slow or single-channel memory.

The Ryzen 9 8945HS has the stronger theoretical efficiency argument because it is designed for a lower sustained power envelope. That makes it easier to install in thinner laptops and generally reduces the cooling burden.
The i7-14650HX can consume considerably more power during demanding workloads. It is therefore usually found in larger 16-inch gaming laptops, workstations, and thick performance notebooks with multiple fans and substantial heat pipes. Those systems may be faster, but they can also be heavier, louder, and less convenient away from an outlet.
Do not treat the processor’s power rating as a battery-life prediction. Real endurance also depends on battery capacity, screen brightness, panel type, refresh-rate switching, discrete-GPU behavior, Wi-Fi hardware, BIOS, Windows power mode, background software, and fan policy. A Ryzen laptop with a smaller battery can lose to an Intel model with a larger one.
The practical conclusion is that the 8945HS often has an efficiency and mobility advantage, but only a test of the exact laptop can establish battery life or noise.

Creator, encoding, and development workloads
For CPU-only rendering, compression, compiling, simulation, and other highly parallel tasks, the i7-14650HX is usually the better choice when the laptop can sustain its power limits.
Video editing is more complicated. Performance depends on the application and the complete media platform, including Intel Quick Sync support, AMD’s media engine, discrete-GPU encoding, codec, timeline resolution, effects, plug-ins, and export format. Neither processor is universally superior in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, or HandBrake without a controlled test using the same laptop class and software version.
For developers, the Intel chip is attractive when large projects, containers, virtual machines, and parallel builds dominate. The Ryzen system is often preferable when development is combined with travel, unplugged work, and a thinner chassis.

Memory and upgradeability can change the decision
For a modern performance laptop, 16 GB of RAM is a reasonable minimum, while 32 GB is preferable for video editing, CAD, virtual machines, development, and heavy multitasking. Avoid 8 GB unless the laptop is unusually inexpensive and upgradeable.
Check the exact model for:
- Dual-channel operation rather than a single memory module
- Whether RAM is soldered or socketed
- Maximum supported capacity in the actual laptop
- DDR5 versus faster LPDDR5X memory
- Available SSD slots and ease of servicing
Soldered LPDDR5X can improve efficiency and integrated-graphics bandwidth, but it removes upgrade flexibility. Some Intel laptops offer socketed DDR5, while some AMD laptops do not. Processor specifications alone cannot answer this question.
Choose the laptop, not just the processor
Before buying, compare the complete configurations in this order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- GPU: Identify the model and wattage. An RTX 4070 laptop can be a much better gaming purchase than an RTX 4060 model, regardless of CPU.
- Cooling: Look for a substantial heat-pipe system, multiple fans, and a performance mode that does not immediately throttle.
- RAM: Prefer at least 16 GB, ideally dual-channel; choose 32 GB for demanding professional work.
- Display: Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness, color coverage, response time, and whether the panel can switch to a lower refresh rate on battery.
- Battery and portability: Compare watt-hours, weight, charger size, and whether the discrete GPU can turn off during light use.
- Upgrade path: Verify RAM and SSD access rather than relying on the processor’s maximum listed capacity.
- Price and warranty: Compare the exact configuration, current sale price, warranty, and return policy.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Core i7-14650HX if:
- You prioritize sustained CPU throughput over portability.
- Your work includes rendering, compiling, compression, simulation, virtual machines, or heavy multitasking.
- The laptop has strong cooling and a high-performance or maximum-power mode.
- It includes a stronger discrete GPU or higher GPU wattage at a similar price.
- You are comfortable with a larger, heavier, potentially louder system.
Choose the Ryzen 9 8945HS if:
- You want a thinner, lighter performance laptop.
- Battery-friendly unplugged use matters.
- You may use the laptop without a discrete GPU.
- Integrated-graphics gaming or media capability is important.
- The AMD laptop has better battery capacity, a more efficient display, faster LPDDR5X memory, or a lower price.
- The Intel alternative has an unnecessarily bulky design or restrictive thermal behavior.
Final verdict
The Core i7-14650HX wins on raw sustained CPU performance when installed in a well-cooled laptop that allows it to use its higher power limits. The Ryzen 9 8945HS wins on efficiency, portability, and integrated graphics, making it the more balanced option for mobile users and systems without a powerful discrete GPU.
For gaming laptops, make the final decision from the whole specification sheet. A better GPU, higher wattage, dual-channel RAM, stronger cooling, superior display, larger battery, or better price can easily outweigh the CPU difference.
