HotHardware’s page 3 testing shows the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a gaming-first eight-core processor with excellent everyday responsiveness. It performs strongly in single-threaded, office and browser workloads, but its 8 cores and 16 threads cannot match Ryzen 9 and other high-core-count CPUs in sustained rendering, compression or encoding. That makes it an excellent high-refresh gaming CPU—not a universal workstation champion.

This page is one section of HotHardware’s six-page November 2024 review. It covers memory, CPU, application, browser and compression benchmarks; the direct gaming, power and final-verdict sections appear later.

What HotHardware page 3 actually tests

The page measures the parts of CPU performance that frame-rate charts do not show:

Test conditions matter

HotHardware updated motherboard firmware, used optimized or high-performance defaults, configured memory at the maximum officially supported speed without overclocking, formatted the SSDs, installed a fully updated Windows 11 Pro image and installed the required drivers and benchmark software. Auto-updating and OneDrive were disabled; temporary files and prefetch data were cleaned; the SSDs were optimized with Windows tools; and Focus Assist reduced interruptions.

That preparation improves repeatability, but it does not make the numbers timeless. Motherboard firmware, memory training, BIOS power limits, browser versions, Windows updates and benchmark revisions can all change results. These are measurements from a 2024 review, not directly interchangeable with a 2026 test run.

AMD’s product page and sales guide list these core specifications. The defining feature is second-generation 3D V-Cache implementation: HotHardware reports that AMD placed the cache die beneath the compute die, putting the CPU cores closer to the cooler. That arrangement supports higher clocks and full overclocking support compared with earlier X3D designs.

AIDA64: cache helps, but DRAM bandwidth is not extraordinary

Memory bandwidth

The 9800X3D landed around the middle of HotHardware’s Ryzen results for memory bandwidth. Its gaming advantage therefore does not come from unusually fast system memory alone.

Memory latency

In this configuration, memory latency was somewhat higher than on the other tested Ryzen systems despite similar timings. Treat that as a platform result, not a permanent property of every 9800X3D: BIOS behavior, memory training, DIMMs and motherboard design can all affect latency.

  • Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz

Cache latency

Some L1 and L2 cache-latency figures improved over the 7800X3D, and the chip compared favorably with Intel systems in the review. Cache latency is only one input to performance; no single AIDA64 number predicts game performance by itself.

The practical point is that a large on-chip cache can let cache-sensitive games avoid some trips to system memory. That can matter more to games than raw DRAM bandwidth, while bandwidth-heavy productivity workloads may see a different ranking.

Geekbench 6.3: fast cores, normal eight-core scaling

Geekbench 6.3 includes encryption, compression, HTML parsing and physics workloads in both single-threaded and multithreaded runs. HotHardware found the 9800X3D’s multithreaded score in the middle of the group because it has eight cores and 16 threads. Its single-threaded result was much stronger, beating older Ryzen 7000 processors and lower-clocked Intel chips in that test set.

This distinction explains the chip’s character. Fast individual cores make games, applications and the desktop feel responsive; total core count determines how quickly a sustained all-core job finishes. The 9800X3D is not a productivity specialist simply because it is quick in lightly threaded work.

PCMark 10 Applications: unusually strong everyday performance

PCMark 10 Applications runs real Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Edge tasks. HotHardware placed the 9800X3D second in its PCMark results, crediting the single-CCD design, competitive clocks, large cache and Zen 5 improvements.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor
  • Processor provides dependable and fast execution of tasks with maximum efficiency.Graphics Frequency : 2200 MHZ.Number of CPU Cores : 8. Maximum Operating Temperature (Tjmax) : 89°C.
  • Ryzen 7 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency

  • Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
  • 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance

That is meaningful for gaming PCs used for school, office work, browsing and general multitasking. It does not prove superiority in rendering, scientific simulation or professional video production; those applications need their own specialized benchmarks.

Crossmark: a newer eight-core CPU can challenge an older 16-core chip

Crossmark combines productivity, creativity and responsiveness tests. The 9800X3D finished ahead of the Ryzen 7 9700X and just behind the older 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X in HotHardware’s results.

The result illustrates why core count alone is not a universal performance ranking. A newer architecture and higher per-core speed can keep an eight-core CPU competitive in mixed, lightly threaded work. The 7950X still has the advantage when software sustains all of its cores.

Browser performance: near the top of the group

HotHardware tested JetStream and Speedometer in Google Chrome on a clean, updated Windows 11 installation with default browser settings. JetStream exercises JavaScript and WebAssembly; Speedometer measures web-application responsiveness.

The 9800X3D performed near the top of the tested processors and was more than fast enough for modern web apps. Browsers are often lightly threaded, so high single-core speed and low system latency matter more than maximum core count. Browser versions and operating-system updates can materially move these scores, and browser performance is not a direct game benchmark.

7-Zip exposes the core-count trade-off

7-Zip’s LZMA compression and decompression workloads can consume many CPU resources. The 9800X3D remained competitive in single-threaded testing, but its 8-core/16-thread configuration could not keep up with higher-core-count processors in heavily threaded runs.

This is the clearest boundary of the design. Occasional archive extraction is no concern; frequent large archive creation, batch compression, encoding, rendering, compiling or simulation favors a Ryzen 9 9900X, 9950X, 9900X3D or another processor with more cores.

How these results connect to gaming

Page 3 establishes that the 9800X3D is responsive outside games and has the cache and per-core speed expected of a gaming-focused CPU. It does not independently prove that it is the best gaming processor.

On page 5, HotHardware used 1080p tests designed to expose CPU differences and 4K tests where the GPU becomes a larger bottleneck. The 9800X3D led the cited game tests, but margins narrowed at higher resolution. AMD’s launch comparisons with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and Core i9-14900K are vendor testing, not independent review data.

Should you buy the 9800X3D in 2026?

As of August 18, 2026, AMD’s U.S. store still listed the 9800X3D at its original $479 price but showed it out of stock. AMD’s current desktop lineup includes the newer Ryzen 7 9850X3D, an 8-core/16-thread X3D part with up to a 5.6 GHz boost clock. The 9800X3D is therefore most attractive when its street price is clearly below the 9850X3D, not when both cost about the same.

AMD Ryzen™ 7 9700X 8-Core, 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • This dominant gaming processor can deliver fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
  • 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
  • 5.5 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 40 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
  • For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
  • Cooler not included

The 7800X3D remains a sensible value alternative when substantially cheaper. It uses the same broad 8-core/16-thread AM5 concept but an older Zen 4 design and lower clocks. Conversely, creators who regularly render, encode, compile or compress should compare higher-core-count Ryzen 9 processors rather than assuming an X3D label makes the 9800X3D ideal.

Buyer guide

  • New high-refresh gaming build: Buy when paired with a suitably powerful GPU and the price is competitive.
  • AM5 upgrader: A compelling drop-in performance upgrade, provided the motherboard BIOS supports it.
  • 4K GPU-limited player: Spend more on the graphics card first; CPU differences often shrink at 4K.
  • Streamer or occasional creator: Strong mixed-use choice, but check whether your software scales beyond eight cores.
  • Workstation user: Prefer Ryzen 9 or another high-core-count CPU for sustained production workloads.
  • Value buyer: Compare discounted 7800X3D pricing and the 9850X3D’s premium before deciding.

Platform and setup cautions

The 9800X3D requires an AM5 motherboard, DDR5 memory and a separate cooler. Existing 600-series boards can support it after the appropriate BIOS update, but support must be checked with the motherboard maker. AMD officially specifies DDR5-5600; DDR5-6000 is enthusiast guidance that depends on the memory kit, motherboard and integrated memory controller, not a guaranteed rating.

HotHardware measured temperatures generally in the high-60s to low-70s Celsius in parts of testing, with default-configuration peaks around 78°C and no cited readings above 83°C. Those are review-system results, not a promise for every case, cooler, ambient temperature or motherboard. The 120 W TDP also does not equal fixed package power under every workload.

Verdict

HotHardware’s page 3 supports a precise conclusion: the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a gaming-first CPU that also feels fast in office applications, browsers and other lightly threaded work. Its eight cores are enough for most gaming PCs, but they remain a real limitation in sustained all-core workloads. In 2026, buy it for a meaningful discount or a straightforward AM5 gaming upgrade; otherwise compare the newer 9850X3D, cheaper 7800X3D and higher-core-count Ryzen 9 options against your actual workload and GPU.
