The Ryzen 7 8700G is a strong choice when you want a desktop that can game without a graphics card. Its Radeon 780M can handle esports, indie games, older titles and some newer games at reduced settings. But it is not automatically a good-value gaming CPU: its integrated graphics are the point, while its smaller cache and PCIe 4.0 x8 graphics link make it a less compelling base for a PC that will use a discrete GPU.

Verdict: Consider it for a compact or GPU-free AM5 system if the full build cost is competitive. If you are buying a graphics card now—or expect to pair the system with a powerful one soon—compare a conventional Ryzen CPU plus a discrete GPU instead.

What the Ryzen 7 8700G is

The 8700G is an AM5 desktop APU: a processor with substantial integrated graphics. It launched in Q1 2024 and uses AMD’s Zen 4 CPU architecture and RDNA 3 graphics. “Ryzen 8000” does not mean it is a Zen 5 processor. Its eight CPU cores and 16 threads are paired with a Radeon 780M integrated GPU and a Ryzen AI NPU.

Radeon 780M gaming: capable, with important limits

The Radeon 780M is among the strongest integrated graphics options in desktop processors, but it is not a substitute for a midrange gaming card. Independent testing found the 8700G capable of playable 1080p gaming in selected titles with reduced settings, and more comfortable at 720p in demanding games. Results vary significantly by game, settings, memory configuration and driver.

  • Esports, older games and indies: These are the best fit. Many can be played at 1080p with adjusted settings, though the result depends on the title and desired frame rate.
  • Optimized or older AAA games: 1080p may be workable at low settings, sometimes with upscaling. Do not assume high settings or consistently high frame rates.
  • Demanding current AAA games: Expect compromises. Lower resolution, reduced detail and supported upscaling can help; 720p may be the more realistic target in particularly demanding titles.

Tom’s Hardware characterized the experience as passable 1080p and solid 720p gaming, while noting the limits in image quality and game selection. Its game testing is a useful reference, not a promise of a particular frame rate in every game. AMD’s own published testing used 1080p low settings and 32GB of DDR5-6400; treat those results as vendor testing on that configuration, not a universal out-of-box baseline (AMD’s test notes).

Upscaling can make a game easier to run by rendering internally at a lower resolution and reconstructing the output. Frame-generation features, where supported, can improve displayed smoothness, but they do not turn the 780M into a discrete GPU or remove the compromises in image quality and responsiveness. Judge performance using the specific game and settings you care about.

Memory is part of the graphics system

The 780M uses system memory rather than its own pool of dedicated VRAM. That makes memory bandwidth a major performance factor. Use two matching DIMMs so the processor can operate in dual-channel mode; a single stick can substantially restrict iGPU performance. For a new gaming-capable build, 32GB is a sensible capacity to consider, particularly if you game while keeping other applications open.

AMD lists official support up to DDR5-5200 depending on DIMM configuration. EXPO memory profiles can run the memory faster, but that is memory overclocking, not a guarantee that every kit will operate at its advertised profile on every board. Faster DDR5 may improve graphics performance, but stability matters more than chasing the highest number. If EXPO causes boot or stability problems, update the BIOS, check the board’s validated memory list, allow memory training, or try a lower speed.

The integrated GPU can reserve or dynamically use shared system RAM, leaving less memory for applications. A system with only 16GB can feel constrained during gaming and multitasking. Include the memory kit’s cost in the build comparison: the APU’s graphics performance depends on it.

CPU performance: a capable eight-core, not a universal AM5 winner

For ordinary desktop work, web browsing, office applications and multitasking, eight Zen 4 cores and 16 threads provide ample capability. The processor can also handle development and content-creation workloads, though performance in rendering, encoding or compilation depends on the application and should be compared with CPUs tested under the same conditions.

In Tom’s Hardware’s Cinebench 2024 testing, the 8700G was 23% faster than the Ryzen 7 5700G in multi-core performance and 22% faster in single-core performance. Those are results from that review’s test setup, not a guarantee of the same uplift in every workload (application benchmarks).

The 8700G’s 16MB of L3 cache and reduced processor I/O are relevant when a discrete GPU is involved. A conventional AM5 Ryzen processor may be a better fit for CPU-limited gaming or heavy work, depending on the model. The 8700G’s CPU is respectable; its defining advantage is that it can also provide useful gaming graphics without a separate card.

PCIe and upgrade trade-offs

The 8700G provides PCIe 4.0 rather than PCIe 5.0 from the processor. Its discrete graphics connection is PCIe 4.0 x8, rather than the x16 connection common on many conventional desktop Ryzen processors. AnandTech details the chip’s lane allocation in its review.

PCIe 4.0 x8 is not automatically a problem: it can be adequate for many current midrange graphics cards. It is, however, a platform compromise that matters more when planning a high-end GPU, a graphics card with a narrower interface or a long-term upgrade path. AMD’s Phoenix configuration also provides eight PCIe 4.0 lanes for two x4 NVMe connections, but the motherboard determines how storage lanes are implemented and whether slots share bandwidth or disable other connections. Check the board manual before planning multiple SSDs.

In short, you can add a discrete GPU later, but “upgradeable” should not be confused with offering the same expansion flexibility as a conventional desktop Ryzen CPU. The 8700G is most coherent when the integrated graphics will remain in use, or when any later graphics card is likely to be modest.

Motherboard, cooler and small-system planning

A B650 board is a sensible starting point for many builds. A620 may lower the cost if its feature set meets your needs; premium B650E, X670E or X870-class boards make sense only when their added connectivity is useful. AMD lists compatibility across a range of chipsets, including A620, B650/B650E, X670/X670E, X870/X870E, B840 and B850. Features remain board-specific.

Before buying, check that the board’s BIOS supports the 8700G, whether it needs an update, and whether it offers BIOS Flashback if you may need to update without a supported CPU. The processor supports display standards including DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1, but the motherboard must physically include the output you intend to use. For a small-form-factor build, also check VRM cooling, case airflow, cooler height, memory clearance, Wi-Fi and the number and layout of M.2 slots.

The boxed processor listing identifies the Wraith Spire as the included cooler, and AMD gives the chip a 65W default TDP (AMD’s product listing). The bundled cooler can suit a stock configuration, but noise and sustained boost behavior depend on case airflow, ambient temperature and motherboard power settings. A low-profile cooler may be required in a compact case; a larger tower cooler is not automatically necessary unless you want lower noise or use higher power limits.

Does the Ryzen AI NPU make a difference?

The NPU is rated up to 16 TOPS, but that number is not a measure of gaming speed or general CPU performance. An application must explicitly support the relevant NPU acceleration path, and the benefit depends on the software and task. AMD cites examples such as noise cancellation and software from Adobe, DaVinci and Topaz, but check support for the exact application and version you use (AMD’s overview). Treat the NPU as a secondary feature, not a reason on its own to buy the processor.

Value in 2026: compare the whole build

The 8700G launched at a suggested price of $329 (AMD’s launch announcement). That launch figure is not a current buying recommendation. In 2026, compare the actual price and availability of the processor with the total cost of the motherboard, dual-channel DDR5, cooling and any graphics card you would otherwise buy. Retailer prices and stock change, and a listing price alone does not establish good value.

The core trade-off is simple: with the 8700G, you pay for a much stronger integrated GPU while accepting a less expansive CPU I/O configuration. That can be a good exchange for a GPU-free compact PC. If you are already buying a discrete GPU, a conventional Ryzen CPU plus an entry-level or used graphics card may deliver more graphics performance for a similar total cost. Compare complete configurations rather than CPU prices alone.

Alternatives by use case

  • Ryzen 5 8600G: Six cores, 12 threads and Radeon 760M graphics make this a natural lower-cost AM5 APU alternative. It is worth comparing if the system is primarily iGPU-limited and you do not need the 8700G’s extra CPU cores or its maximum integrated-graphics capability. Its launch suggested price was $229; that is not a current street-price quote.
  • Ryzen 7 5700G: An older AM4 and DDR4 option can make a cheaper complete system if you already own compatible parts or find a good platform deal. It has older Zen 3 CPU cores and much weaker integrated graphics than the 8700G, so weigh the lower platform cost against the gaming difference.
  • Conventional Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 plus a discrete GPU: Usually the more logical comparison for a gaming PC with a graphics card from day one. You gain a dedicated GPU and can choose a conventional CPU with more cache or broader PCIe connectivity. Compare the total cost, including the card, rather than assuming either route wins on CPU price.
  • Ryzen 7 7700 or another conventional AM5 CPU: Consider this class if CPU performance, cache and a stronger foundation for a discrete GPU matter more than gaming without one. Its integrated graphics are not intended for meaningful gaming, so budget for a graphics card.
  • Newer AM5 processors: The 8700G is a 2024 product. Check current alternatives at the prices available where you live; without a like-for-like current price and benchmark comparison, there is no sound basis for naming a universal 2026 winner.

Who should buy the Ryzen 7 8700G?

  • Buy or shortlist it if you need useful integrated graphics now, want a compact GPU-free desktop, play less-demanding games, or want one chip for general work and occasional gaming—and the complete AM5 build is competitively priced.
  • Compare it carefully if you expect to add a modest GPU later. The upgrade is possible, but the PCIe 4.0 x8 link and reduced cache make this less attractive than a conventional CPU for a long-term high-end GPU system.
  • Usually skip it if a discrete GPU is part of your initial build, if you target high-refresh 1440p or 4K gaming, or if you need PCIe 5.0 and a full x16 graphics link. A standard Ryzen CPU plus a suitable GPU is generally the more direct route.

For a self-built desktop, use the current AMD graphics driver package; for an OEM or customized prebuilt system, the manufacturer’s driver may be preferable. Check AMD’s support page for the current package rather than relying on a version number that may have changed.
