Lucienne is a Zen 2-based design in AMD’s Ryzen 5000 mobile lineup—not a Zen 3 processor, but not merely Renoir with a new label. The distinction matters because Ryzen 5000 also includes Zen 3-based Cezanne chips, and the family name alone does not tell you which architecture a laptop uses. Lucienne retains Renoir’s broad design lineage while bringing changes to processor configurations and power management.

Why “Ryzen 5000” does not tell the whole story

AMD introduced Ryzen 5000 mobile processors in January 2021, using the same product family for chips built on two CPU architectures. Cezanne brought Zen 3 to mobile, while Lucienne carried Zen 2 into the Ryzen 5000 range. AMD’s launch specifications identify the Ryzen 7 5700U and Ryzen 5 5500U as Zen 2, and the Ryzen 7 5800U and Ryzen 5 5600U as Zen 3. AMD’s launch announcement and specifications make the split clear.

That makes the Ryzen 7 5700U and Ryzen 7 5800U a useful naming lesson: both are eight-core, 16-thread Ryzen 5000 processors, but the 5700U is Zen 2 Lucienne and the 5800U is Zen 3 Cezanne. The family and tier labels are not reliable substitutes for checking the exact model and architecture.

Codename Mobile branding CPU architecture Example processors
Renoir Ryzen 4000 Zen 2 Ryzen 5 4500U, Ryzen 7 4700U, Ryzen 7 4800U
Lucienne Ryzen 5000 Zen 2 Ryzen 3 5300U, Ryzen 5 5500U, Ryzen 7 5700U
Cezanne Ryzen 5000 Zen 3 Ryzen 5 5600U, Ryzen 7 5800U, Ryzen 5 5600H

Zen 2 and Zen 3 are CPU architecture names; Renoir, Lucienne and Cezanne are design codenames; Ryzen 4000 and Ryzen 5000 are product-family labels. AMD’s mobile numbering in this generation does not map cleanly to one architecture. For AMD’s terminology, see its Zen architecture overview. Contemporary coverage also explained the mixed-architecture lineup: AnandTech’s Ryzen 5000 mobile launch analysis.

Which processors are Lucienne?

The principal consumer Lucienne processors are 15 W-class U-series chips. AMD’s launch table lists these specifications:

Processor Cores / threads Base clock Max boost Cache Nominal TDP Architecture
Ryzen 3 5300U 4 / 8 2.6 GHz Up to 3.8 GHz 6 MB 15 W Zen 2
Ryzen 5 5500U 6 / 12 2.1 GHz Up to 4.0 GHz 11 MB 15 W Zen 2
Ryzen 7 5700U 8 / 16 1.8 GHz Up to 4.3 GHz 12 MB 15 W Zen 2

For comparison, AMD lists the Zen 3 Ryzen 5 5600U at six cores and 12 threads, up to 4.2 GHz, with 19 MB cache, and the Ryzen 7 5800U at eight cores and 16 threads, up to 4.4 GHz, with 20 MB cache. These headline specifications identify important differences, but do not predict a laptop’s performance by themselves.

What Lucienne inherits from Renoir—and what changed

Lucienne remains in the Renoir family tree: it uses Zen 2 CPU cores, a 7 nm process and a similar integrated-APU approach with Radeon graphics from the same broad Vega-generation lineage. It is not a wholesale move to Zen 3, nor should it be described as an entirely new CPU architecture.

But “just a rebrand” leaves out real distinctions. One visible example is simultaneous multithreading (SMT). The Ryzen 5 4500U and Ryzen 7 4700U Renoir models were six-core/six-thread and eight-core/eight-thread parts, respectively; their Lucienne-positioned successors, the 5500U and 5700U, support 12 and 16 threads. Thread-heavy work can benefit from that additional parallelism even though the CPU cores remain Zen 2. The exact advantage depends on the workload and laptop.

Lucienne also brought power-management refinements. Technical reporting at the time described more granular control of operating conditions, including individual-core voltage control and separate CPU and GPU voltage domains. Those are platform-level changes that can affect how a system manages power, responsiveness and boost behavior; they do not turn Zen 2 cores into Zen 3. AnandTech’s Lucienne analysis discusses these refinements and why a simple relabel description is incomplete.

It is most useful to separate four things when comparing chips: CPU architecture, platform and power-management implementation, the individual SKU’s core/thread and clock configuration, and the laptop manufacturer’s choices. A change in one does not imply a change in all the others.

What to expect from performance

There is no single responsible percentage for “Lucienne versus Renoir.” A Ryzen 7 5700U can have a clear multithreaded advantage over an eight-core/eight-thread Ryzen 7 4700U in workloads that use the extra threads. The size of that benefit varies by application, power limit and cooling. Likewise, the Ryzen 5 5500U’s 12 threads can help in parallel work compared with the six-thread Ryzen 5 4500U, but not every everyday task scales with thread count.

Against Cezanne, the important point is architectural: a Ryzen 7 5800U is Zen 3, while a 5700U is Zen 2. The 5800U also has a larger listed cache, and Zen 3 is the genuine CPU-architecture step forward in the Ryzen 5000 U-series. But a poorly cooled or memory-constrained Cezanne laptop can disappoint, while a well-configured Lucienne laptop may be a better overall system for its price.

Processor comparisons are most useful when tested laptops have comparable memory, power behavior and cooling. For a meaningful benchmark comparison, look for the exact CPU, RAM capacity and channel configuration, sustained package power, cooling design, BIOS and operating-system versions, benchmark version, and whether the test measures a short burst or a sustained workload. The processor’s maximum boost clock and nominal 15 W rating alone are not enough.

How to identify the architecture while shopping

  1. Read the complete processor model. Ryzen 3 5300U, Ryzen 5 5500U and Ryzen 7 5700U are Zen 2 Lucienne. Ryzen 5 5600U and Ryzen 7 5800U are Zen 3 Cezanne.
  2. Check threads as well as cores. A six-core/six-thread processor is not the same proposition as a six-core/12-thread one for well-threaded workloads.
  3. Inspect the laptop configuration. Compare RAM capacity and channel arrangement, memory type and speed, storage, screen, battery, wireless hardware and warranty. Integrated graphics performance is particularly sensitive to memory bandwidth.
  4. Look beyond the processor’s nominal TDP. The 15 W label is a class specification, not a guarantee that every notebook holds the same power or delivers the same sustained performance. Cooling, firmware and OEM power limits matter.
  5. Compare the complete price and machine. Lucienne can make sense when it is meaningfully cheaper or paired with better memory, battery, display or warranty. If prices are close and the rest of the laptop is comparable, a Cezanne model offers Zen 3 rather than Zen 2.

AMD announced the Ryzen 5000 mobile family on January 12, 2021, and expected consumer systems to begin launching in February that year. It described a broad rollout spanning more than 150 planned consumer and commercial systems. Those are launch-era figures, not a statement about what is currently available in a particular country or retailer. AMD’s CES 2021 systems announcement provides that historical context.

The practical verdict

Think of Lucienne as a refined Renoir-family platform placed in the Ryzen 5000 mobile lineup: Zen 2 at its core, with meaningful configuration and power-management changes. Calling it “rebranded Renoir” captures its architectural lineage but overlooks those refinements. Calling every Ryzen 5000 laptop Zen 3 is simply wrong. For a buying decision, identify the exact CPU first, then judge the whole laptop.
