AMD Radeon Code 22 usually means Windows has disabled the graphics device—not that the GPU has failed. In Device Manager, the exact message is “This device is disabled. (Code 22).” The first fix is to enable the Radeon adapter; reinstalling drivers or replacing hardware is not the right first move.
What AMD Radeon Code 22 means
Code 22 is a Windows Device Manager status, not a separate AMD error code. Windows identifies it as CM_PROB_DISABLED: the device is disabled. A Radeon RX card, AMD integrated graphics, a laptop adapter, or a secondary display adapter can all show the message.
To confirm the code, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, double-click the AMD Radeon device, and read Device status on the General tab. The code alone does not prove the GPU is physically defective, its driver is corrupt, or that you need the latest driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix Code 22 by enabling the Radeon device
- Press Win + X and choose Device Manager.
- If needed, select View → Devices by type, then expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected AMD Radeon adapter and select Enable device. If the option is not on the context menu, check Device Manager’s Action menu.
- Wait for the display to refresh. Restart Windows if prompted or if the warning remains.
- Return to the adapter’s Properties → General tab and verify that Code 22 is gone.
This is Microsoft’s recommended action for Code 22: enable the device in Device Manager. If Windows requests administrator approval, approve it. If “Enable device” is missing, make sure you selected the affected adapter. A missing or disappearing adapter may instead point to a detection, firmware, or manufacturer graphics-mode issue.

If Code 22 returns after a restart
Repeatedly clicking Enable is unlikely to solve an underlying conflict. Note when the issue began: after a black screen or driver crash, a Windows update, a new AMD Software installation, a switch between integrated and discrete graphics, a BIOS change, or new tuning or monitoring software. Users have reported Radeon adapters becoming disabled after crashes, but that does not establish one universal cause; see the community report as an example, not a diagnosis.
- Save your work and restart Windows normally.
- Open Settings → Windows Update, install pending updates, and restart again.
- Recheck Device Manager and record the exact device status. If it changed to another code, follow that code’s diagnosis rather than treating it as Code 22.
- If the device remains enabled but graphics are still unreliable, proceed to driver troubleshooting below.
Windows updates can affect drivers in some situations, but Code 22 itself does not identify Windows Update as the cause.
Update or reinstall the correct Radeon driver
If enabling the adapter does not persist, or a different driver-related error appears, start with the least disruptive driver step:
- In Device Manager, right-click the Radeon adapter and choose Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and check Device Manager again.
- If needed, obtain a driver from the computer maker or AMD, choosing the package for the exact GPU and Windows version.
For a retail Radeon card in a desktop, AMD’s official driver page offers product selection and an Auto-Detect tool. AMD lists that tool for 64-bit Windows 10/11 version 1809 and later; check the live page for current support and packages rather than relying on an old driver-version number.
For a laptop or prebuilt PC, check the manufacturer’s support page first. Switchable graphics, power management, and other customized components may depend on an OEM driver. AMD’s own release documentation has advised checking the OEM for device-specific drivers in some situations (example release note). Do not assume a generic package is always a better fit.

Use AMD Cleanup Utility for persistent driver problems
A clean driver removal is a second-line option—not a required response to a Code 22 that disappears after you enable the adapter. Consider AMD Cleanup Utility if driver installs keep failing, AMD Software will not open, the problem followed several driver upgrades, or Device Manager changes to a driver-related code.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official instructions and save the utility locally.
- Run
amdcleanuputility.exe. When prompted, choose Yes to restart into Safe Mode; AMD recommends Safe Mode for best results. - Allow cleanup to finish. The display may flicker or go blank temporarily. AMD says the process can take about 15–20 minutes in some cases.
- Restart when prompted, then install the appropriate Radeon driver and restart once more.
AMD says the utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers/software, but does not remove AMD chipset drivers on AMD-powered systems. It also creates a restore point before cleanup. If something goes wrong, AMD documents restoring the system with the AMD Cleanup Utility Restore Point through Windows System Restore. This utility cleans software; it cannot repair a defective GPU, inadequate power, or a firmware problem.
Some AMD Software releases offer a Factory Reset option during installation to remove previous AMD Software components. Its availability and labels vary by release, so use the current installer’s options; AMD’s troubleshooting guidance discusses clean installation and cleanup approaches (AMD stability guidance).
If the problem started after a driver update
If the Radeon device worked before a specific driver update and failed immediately afterward, try Device Manager → Radeon device → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, if that button is available. Alternatively, install a previous compatible package from AMD or, for a laptop, the system maker. AMD recommends considering a previously working driver when a known issue is suspected. Avoid repeatedly switching between OEM and generic packages without keeping track of what you installed.
Read the new status before taking the next step
| What you see after enabling | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Code 22 disappears and graphics work | The device was disabled. | Restart once and confirm it stays enabled. |
| Code 31 | Windows cannot load the required driver. | Troubleshoot the driver; this is distinct from Code 22. See Microsoft’s Device Manager code guidance. |
| Code 43 | Windows stopped the device after detecting a problem. | Check the driver and stability, then consider hardware or power checks if it persists. |
| Adapter missing from Device Manager | Windows is not currently detecting it. | Check BIOS/UEFI and OEM graphics settings; on a desktop, later inspect card seating and power. |
| Adapter enabled, but resolution is low | The proper Radeon driver may not be active. | Check the status code and driver, including whether Windows is using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. |
| AMD Software installer error | An installation problem, not the meaning of Code 22. | Use the specific installer error’s guidance. AMD lists Errors 192, 205, and 207 separately in its Software Help Center. |
In particular, AMD Installer Error 192 is not Device Manager Code 22. AMD identifies pending updates, driver conflicts, and corrupted system files among possible causes of Error 192 (AMD Error 192 guidance). Do not use the two codes interchangeably.

Check graphics mode, firmware, and hardware only when indicated
A laptop may intentionally disable its discrete Radeon GPU in an integrated-only, battery-saving, or hybrid graphics mode. Check the manufacturer’s GPU-mode utility and documentation before forcing a different setting. If the Enable option is absent or the adapter keeps disappearing, check whether BIOS/UEFI or an OEM setting controls it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not update BIOS just because Code 22 appeared. Consider a firmware update only if the manufacturer documents a relevant fix or there is a specific detection or compatibility problem, and follow the maker’s instructions carefully.
Physical checks are more appropriate if the card disappears, is not detected in BIOS, loses video under load, or continues to show serious errors after a clean driver install. On a desktop, shut down and disconnect power before inspecting the card; follow safe handling procedures. Verify the card is seated, PCIe power connectors are secure, the monitor is connected to the intended output, and any overclock or undervolt is removed. Try another supported PCIe slot only if you know how to do so safely. AMD’s stability guidance also recommends factory-recommended settings and considering overheating, tuning utilities, and hardware stability.
If the adapter is absent from both Windows and firmware detection, or continues to fail after correct drivers and safe hardware checks, contact the PC or graphics-card manufacturer. Code 22 alone is not a reason to buy a replacement GPU.

Does Code 22 mean my graphics card is dead?
No. Code 22 reports a disabled state, not a hardware diagnosis. Check whether the device can be enabled and whether it remains detected before considering hardware failure.
Can Code 22 damage a GPU?
The code itself does not indicate physical damage. It reports that Windows has disabled the device.
Should I use AMD Cleanup Utility for Code 22?
Not if enabling the device resolves the issue. Use Cleanup Utility as a later driver-troubleshooting step when installations fail or driver-related errors persist.
Should I install an AMD driver or my laptop manufacturer’s driver?
For laptops and prebuilt PCs, check the manufacturer’s package first because graphics switching and power features may be customized. For retail desktop Radeon cards, AMD’s driver page is the normal source.
What if Code 31 appears after Code 22?
The device is no longer simply disabled; Code 31 means Windows cannot load the required driver. Troubleshoot the driver separately.
Can Windows Update cause Code 22?
A driver change after an update may be relevant to the timing, but Code 22 itself does not establish Windows Update as the cause.
