AMD Radeon Error Code 205 usually means AMD Software finished installing, but Windows Update may have replaced or reverted the graphics driver during or just after setup. It is a driver-version mismatch warning, not proof that your Radeon GPU is defective. Check which driver is active, then follow AMD’s recommended fix: temporarily change Device Installation Settings, restart, and reinstall the correct AMD package.
What AMD Radeon Error 205 means
AMD describes the message as: “AMD Software installation completed successfully but Windows Update may have reverted your driver version during the process.” In other words, the Radeon software package may have installed, but the display driver you intended to install might not be the one Windows is now using. The wording says “may have” because the message does not prove that Windows Update caused every instance.
Error 205 is not, by itself, a hardware-failure diagnosis or proof that the download was corrupt. The practical question is whether the intended AMD driver remains active after a restart. A different driver can affect compatibility, performance, Radeon features, display output, GPU acceleration, or laptop graphics switching.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, then double-click the AMD Radeon device.
- Open the Driver tab and note the Driver Provider, Driver Date, and Driver Version. Also check the device status on the General tab.
- Compare the version with the AMD package you meant to install. If available, open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and check whether it opens and shows the expected Radeon features.
Record your Radeon model and Windows version too. An installer reaching completion does not establish that its driver stayed active after Windows restarted.

AMD’s recommended fix for Error 205
AMD’s Error 205 support instructions temporarily turn off automatic device-driver installation through the legacy System Properties interface, then reinstall AMD Software:
- Press the Windows key, type
sysdm.cpl, and press Enter. - In System Properties, select the Hardware tab.
- Click Device Installation Settings, choose No, and click Save Changes.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the AMD installer again.
This is a temporary setting adjustment, not a recommendation to disable Windows Update permanently. After confirming the intended driver is installed and remains active following a restart, you can restore the prior device-installation behavior. Windows may then offer or install a different driver later, so check the version again if the issue returns.

If the Device Installation Settings option is missing, the interface may differ on your Windows build or the computer may be managed by an organization. Do not make random registry changes. If policy prevents the change, consult your administrator or use the appropriate system-maker support route.
Choose the right AMD driver package
Get the package through AMD’s driver and installation guidance, using automatic detection or manual product selection. Match the exact Radeon product and Windows version; do not assume the newest Adrenalin release supports every older GPU. AMD’s Adrenalin installation guide lists Windows 11 version 21H2 or later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 or later as baselines for compatible products, but actual support depends on the GPU and release. The guide was updated February 9, 2026, and uses Adrenalin 26.1.1 as an example; installer screens and supported products can change.

- Desktop Radeon card: Select the specific card model and supported Windows version.
- Ryzen processor with integrated Radeon graphics: Select the processor or graphics product that matches the system.
- Laptop or all-in-one: Check the computer maker’s support page as well as AMD’s. OEM packages may include device-specific power management or hybrid-graphics support. Prefer the OEM package if a generic AMD driver breaks brightness controls, sleep, display switching, or external monitors.
- Radeon PRO or older Radeon hardware: Use the matching product and driver branch. Do not force a current Adrenalin package onto a product it does not support.
A display driver and the full AMD Software application are separate components: an install mode that installs only the driver may not provide the Adrenalin interface. If the driver appears present but Radeon Software is missing, check the components selected during setup before treating that alone as Error 205.
If Error 205 comes back
- Let Windows finish its work. Restart and allow any pending Windows installation or update to complete. AMD lists Windows Update in progress and a pending Windows installation/update as separate installer conditions. Retry only once the system is idle.
- Consider an offline reinstall as a workaround. Some users report disconnecting from the internet during reinstall to prevent Windows from immediately retrieving another display driver. This is community troubleshooting, not AMD’s dedicated Error 205 requirement. Download the correct package first, temporarily turn off Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, set Device Installation Settings to No, restart, reinstall, restart again, then reconnect and verify the driver.
- Use Clean Install only when there is an existing-installation problem. If the AMD installer offers Clean Install and the current installation seems damaged or mismatched, it can attempt to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing selected components. It may remove Radeon profiles and settings, and it is not guaranteed to stop Windows from reverting a driver.
- Escalate to AMD Cleanup Utility if the installation is corrupted. AMD lists this utility in its Software Help Center. Follow AMD’s current utility instructions and plan for a restart; removal may leave Windows temporarily using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. A restore point or another recovery plan is prudent. Third-party tools such as DDU are not the first step for this error.
- On a laptop, return to the OEM driver if system functions break. Switchable-graphics systems may depend on coordinated integrated- and discrete-GPU drivers. If brightness, sleep, monitor output, or graphics switching fails after installing a generic package, use the laptop maker’s package.
If the AMD installer reports another code as well, address that more specific condition rather than repeating the same Error 205 reinstall. AMD lists Error 202 for Windows Update in progress, 206 for a pending Windows installation or update, 1603 for a general installation failure, and 1604 for an AMD Software uninstall problem. Codes 182, 174, or 175 can indicate hardware or configuration incompatibility; 195 and 196 relate to network or download access. See AMD’s installer FAQ for the applicable recommendations.

For a broader installation failure, AMD documents this log path in its Error 1603 guidance: C:Program FilesAMDCIMLogInstall.log. It may not exist if setup stops earlier, and it is most useful when Error 205 appears alongside another installation failure. See AMD’s Error 1603 article.

- Restart Windows after installation.
- In Device Manager, reopen the Radeon device under Display adapters and confirm its provider and driver version match the package you intended to install.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition if you installed it, and check that expected settings or features are available.
- Check that the display behaves normally, including laptop-specific features if applicable.
- Inspect Windows Update’s optional driver offers before installing any AMD display-driver update, then recheck Device Manager after another restart.
The repair is confirmed when the intended driver remains active after reboot—not merely when the AMD installer reaches 100%.

Does Error 205 mean my Radeon GPU is broken?
No. Error 205 points to a possible driver-version rollback or mismatch; it is not, by itself, evidence of hardware failure.
Should I disable Windows Update permanently?
No. AMD’s fix concerns Device Installation Settings temporarily. Restore normal behavior after verifying the driver, and check the active version if Windows later offers another driver.
Should I use DDU for Error 205?
Not as the first step. Start with AMD’s documented Device Installation Settings procedure. Consider AMD Cleanup Utility for a corrupted installation; third-party cleanup tools are an escalation, not a requirement.
Should I use AMD’s driver or my laptop maker’s driver?
For a laptop with switchable graphics or device-specific display and power features, use the OEM package if AMD’s generic driver causes problems. Otherwise, select a package that explicitly supports the exact GPU and Windows version.
