AMD Radeon Error 182 means the AMD Software installer detected AMD graphics hardware but the specific driver package you downloaded does not support that device or configuration. It usually points to a package mismatch, legacy graphics, embedded hardware, or an OEM-customized laptop or desktop—not a broken GPU. Start by identifying the exact graphics device, then get its driver from the right source.
What is AMD Error 182?
Error 182 is a compatibility rejection by AMD Software Installer. AMD describes it as the detected graphics hardware belonging to a product group the installer does not support. In other words, detection is not the same as compatibility: the installer can see an AMD GPU and still refuse that particular package. The message alone does not show that the GPU has failed or that it cannot work with Windows.
AMD lists embedded Radeon graphics, legacy Radeon products, and graphics customized by a computer manufacturer among the main reasons. A driver intended for the wrong product family or Windows configuration can also be the problem. AMD’s Error 182 guidance describes affected product groups and the recommended driver sources.

Error 182 is different from other installer messages: Error 173 indicates that no AMD graphics hardware was detected; Error 175 concerns unsupported AMD graphics hardware; and Error 183 indicates third-party graphics drivers were detected. Errors 205 and 206 concern a possible Windows Update driver replacement and a pending Windows installation or update, respectively. See AMD’s installer error and installation guidance for details.

Why does Error 182 happen?
The Radeon GPU or APU is in a legacy product group
AMD’s current Error 182 guidance names examples of older product families that may not be supported by a current Adrenalin package, including Radeon R9 Fury and R9 Nano; R9, R7 and R5 200- and 300-series families; and Radeon HD 5000, 6000, 7000, 8000 and 8500–8900 families. AMD also identifies older A-Series and A-Series PRO, FX-Series, Athlon, E-Series, Sempron, C-Series and Z-Series products with Radeon graphics.
These are examples from AMD’s guidance, not a guarantee that every model in a family fails with every driver. Support depends on the exact model, Windows version and package. Older products may need a final legacy driver or a driver distributed through Windows Update rather than the newest Adrenalin release.
A laptop or prebuilt uses OEM-customized graphics
Some computers need a graphics driver supplied by their manufacturer—such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, ASUS, MSI or another system builder. This is common with laptop switchable graphics and hybrid systems, where the driver must work with the computer’s display routing, power management and firmware. AMD recommends checking the OEM or partner for customized Radeon graphics; a generic package from AMD may not be the appropriate first choice.

Embedded Radeon products use a separate driver category. AMD directs users to its driver selector’s Graphics → Radeon Embedded path rather than the standard consumer Radeon selection.
The download does not match the actual device
A desktop GPU package may not be right for a mobile Radeon GPU; an older Ryzen APU’s integrated graphics may not support a current package; and a system can contain more than one graphics device. A Ryzen PC may expose integrated Radeon graphics alongside a separate card, and a computer can also have AMD and non-AMD graphics adapters. Check every entry under Display adapters, not just the card you expect to be using.

Identify the exact graphics device first
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and note the complete name of every listed device.
- If the name is unclear, right-click the device, choose Properties → Details, then select Hardware Ids. AMD hardware IDs commonly begin with
PCIVEN_1002.
You can also check Task Manager → Performance → GPU, run dxdiag, consult the computer’s specifications, or use AMD’s graphics identification guide. If Device Manager shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, that means Windows is not currently showing the vendor driver name; it does not establish whether a particular AMD package supports the hardware. Use the hardware ID and the computer manufacturer’s support page to identify it.
Choose the right fix for your device
1. Current desktop Radeon GPU: select the product manually
- Open AMD’s official Drivers and Support page.
- Use the Product Selector to choose the exact product, rather than repeatedly relying on Auto-Detect after it has returned Error 182.
- Confirm that the download is for the correct product family, desktop or mobile device, and Windows version.
- Install the package selected for that hardware.
AMD’s installation documentation, updated February 9, 2026, describes compatible installations on Windows 11 version 21H2 and later and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later. It illustrates installation with Adrenalin 26.1.1, but that does not mean every older Radeon product is supported by that or any newer release. Check the support for your exact model and package.
2. Laptop or prebuilt: check the manufacturer’s support page
Search the official support page for the exact computer model or serial number and download its graphics driver. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for related chipset, BIOS and platform updates. If it supplies separate integrated- and discrete-graphics packages, use the recommended installation order. An OEM driver can be older than AMD’s general release yet still be the intended package for that system’s graphics switching and power-management features.
3. Legacy Radeon: use the last applicable driver or Windows Update
Do not try to force a current Adrenalin installer onto a product AMD has moved to legacy support. Check AMD’s product-specific guidance for a final compatible AMD driver, if one is offered. For some very old Radeon HD 4000, HD 3000, HD 2000 and earlier products on Windows 10, AMD specifies obtaining driver version 8.970.100.9001 through Windows Update. That version and route are not a universal recommendation and should not be treated as Windows 11 support.
To check for a driver through Windows Update:
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install applicable updates and restart.
- If offered, look under Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates.
- After restarting, check the adapter in Device Manager.
Windows Update may supply a basic compatible display driver rather than the full Radeon Software control panel.

4. Embedded Radeon: select the embedded product
On AMD’s driver support site, choose Graphics → Radeon Embedded, then select the exact embedded product and operating system. Do not assume a consumer Adrenalin download is interchangeable with an embedded driver.
Only after compatibility is confirmed: clean up an existing installation
If you have verified that the package supports the GPU but installation still fails, old or damaged AMD graphics software may be interfering. AMD’s Cleanup Utility instructions recommend using the utility in Windows Safe Mode. The utility removes AMD graphics and audio drivers or software, but it does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers on AMD-powered systems. AMD says cleanup can take around 15–20 minutes, requires a reboot, and creates a System Restore Point before cleaning.
- Download AMD Cleanup Utility from AMD’s official support site and save your work.
- Close open applications and run
amdcleanuputility.exe. - When prompted, choose Yes to reboot into Safe Mode.
- Let cleanup finish, then restart Windows.
- Install the already-verified driver from AMD, the computer manufacturer or Windows Update, as appropriate.
Cleanup can remove conflicting remnants; it cannot make an unsupported GPU compatible with a newer Adrenalin package. Do not use it as a substitute for identifying the correct driver.

These are installation choices, not ways to bypass Error 182:
- Default installs the full AMD Software feature set.
- Minimal provides basic controls without advanced tuning or recording and capture features.
- Driver Only installs the driver without the AMD Software user interface.
- Factory Reset removes previous AMD Software packages and temporarily pauses Windows Update while installation proceeds. The system restarts and installation continues afterward. AMD warns that you cannot roll back to the previously installed drivers after using this option.
Use Factory Reset only after confirming the package supports your GPU. If the device is legacy or OEM-customized, choosing reset will not turn an incompatible package into the correct one.

If Windows replaces the driver after installation
AMD lists Error 205 separately for situations where Windows Update may have reverted a driver version. Finish pending Windows updates and restart before installing. On a laptop, prefer the OEM package when the manufacturer specifies one, rather than repeatedly installing a generic AMD package over an OEM-managed graphics setup.
If Windows immediately fetches another driver during a clean installation, temporarily disconnecting the network while you install the verified package can be a practical troubleshooting measure. It is not AMD’s Error 182 fix. Reconnect afterward and run Windows Update unless the manufacturer or AMD’s instructions advise otherwise.
If Error 182 continues
- Recheck the full model name and hardware ID, including every adapter in Device Manager.
- Confirm that the download is for the right desktop or mobile product, product family and Windows version.
- For a laptop or prebuilt, try the exact model’s official OEM driver.
- Install pending Windows updates and restart, especially after a fresh Windows installation.
- If the package is confirmed compatible, use AMD Cleanup Utility and reinstall.
- For an embedded device, use the Radeon Embedded driver path; for legacy hardware, follow AMD’s product-specific legacy or Windows Update guidance.
- Do not download driver packages from third-party aggregators.
If a supported package still fails, AMD says to attach C:Program FilesAMDCIMLogInstall.log when contacting support and use Error 182 as the subject. The file may not be present if the installer never created that directory.
During installation, close open applications and any software that might interfere. AMD mentions antivirus, firewall, remote-access and streaming software in its installer guidance; if you temporarily pause security software for troubleshooting, restore protection as soon as the installation attempt is complete. Download the installer only from AMD or the computer manufacturer.
